Template:Fruits Basket characters...

Sorry, I didn't mean to undermine the work you put into making the color scheme and text layout of that Fruits Basket navigation template to resemble that of a standard navigation box. Honest! :P I changed the table class back to "toccolours" and readded certain HTML tags because having it set to "navbox" gave the box literally no formatting when viewed in Firefox (e.g., the text was aligned to the left, the font sizes were all the same, and there were no colors; it was a bunch of black and white text with blue links). When I said it was "ugly to Firefox users", I wasn't judging the color scheme or whatnot based on personal taste, rather I was talking about the complete absence of formatting the template had when viewed in Firefox. (Though, it could very well have been a problem only on my Firefox. I didn't actually check it on a different computer.)

I didn't at the time, however, notice that when I manually "fixed" the box, it looked different than it did before you began editing it, so thanks for fixing that... Hrm, in retrospect, perhaps the best course of action would to have been to simply revert it back to a previous state... :/ Anyway, sorry if I offended you, and sorry that I wasn't clear with my intention in editing the template. I changed the template so that it more closely resembles how it is intended to look in IE. Feel free to further improve it if you see fit.

I would but the [show]/[hide] link is hard coded (line 305) in the site wide javascript with the relavent section (Collapsible tables) maintained by User:R. Koot. I'm not sure what the reasoning behind it being by default of the left side. Personally in my eye it makes more sense for the v-d-e to float on the right as it matches the section edit links style. --Dispenser 03:57, 7 December 2006 (UTC)

Moon and solar system footers

Hi. Would it be possible to make these footers collapse to a single line, as opposed to two lines? Also, is there a way to set the default as to whether the footer is initially open or collapsed? Navigation Template help

I've started working on the navigation template for CFB. This is just for feasibility testing for now, to show that it can be done what what the results will look like, as there was some apprehension about creating our own meta-template just for the project. I've added the PSU problem example, and it's working good, except for the show/hide which still doesn't work with the background dark like that, and the white dropshadow looks very funny. 		For your awesome, thoughtful and helpful assistance (okay, you did everything) in creating Template:CFB navbox for the benefit of College Football WikiProject allowing us to have our colored titles and VDE links with font color that people can actually see. Further, his attempts to allow us to have the show/hide function which doesn't work for technical reasons at this time was extremely helpful as well. Lastly, he performed the work "on demand" to my wishes after his initial offer to help and never complained once. Template:Navbox generic, passing thought

Hi again Dispenser,
Thanks for maintaining the above; your recent reversion, however, seems to've rendered the show/hide link ineffective and the box permanently collapsed (!) ...or do I need to purge something...?  False alarm; my error while testing. Sorry!

I was thinking of proposing that either the {{Navigation}} or {{Navbox generic}} format was phased out in favor of the other, for the sake of:

1. consistency in multiple templates' appearance (e.g. in articles about countries);
2. avoiding situations where X templates of one kind are autocollapsed, but one or two of the other kind remain shown.

I'm doubt that ether template needs be phased out. From the recent comments Ruud, he may rewrite the whole thing in the future...

Intriguing!

...It should be very possible to also add a third function to the commons.js file that counts all the tables and navdivs and then collapses them, instead of doing it for each set. While on this note, the autocollapse value is set rather low.

I'm beginning to wonder that any collapsible template's default might best be collapsed, regardless of how many others there may be on the page... I realize, though, that I'm considering templates at the end of articles on countries or their subdivisions; elsewhere, a blanket default of collapsed may indeed be inappropriate.

There is, though, the inconsistency when (say) three {{Navigation}}-based templates next to each other autocollapse, while the single {{Navbox generic}} template following them (or nestling between two of them) doesn't collapse; sometimes I think this can look a little odd, or promote the uncollapsed template without good reason.

As for consistency, I believe that this is more of a wikiproject problem. If we had only created one meta-navbox there would still be great inconstancy, as the guide line for amount and style of information in a navbox is typically set upon by the project...

Apologies; I realize my comment wasn't sufficiently clear. Rather than variation in how templates' contents are presented, I was thinking of the inconsistency described above and the difference in appearance between NavFrame's ({{Navigation}} et al) and class="navbox"'s ({{Navbox generic}} et al) presentation of basic elements (frame, titlebar, background color, etc). Japan train templates

FYI, you should be careful when putting PAGENAME in the pipe of a category. Sometimes, the pagename should not be used, due to unicode "alphabet order" issues. (Tōk is after Tu, even though the wikipedia standard is to sort it as if it was Tok (no macron over the o)). I noticed it in this edit, and there are others as well. It can't be done with this template. The collapsing statement (class="... collapsible autocollapse") needs to appear in the opening tag of the table. If you want that particular template's collapsibility to be set on a per-page bases use class="... collapsible {{{state|autocollapse}}}". —Dispenser 18:15, 19 April 2007 (UTC)

I'm sorry if i seem like an idiot, but are you suggesting that for each implementation of the template, I use class="... collapsible {{{state|autocollapse}}}" in the template itself. how would I set up the variableon the page when I'm displaying it. For instance, for Template:Billy Joel albums (talk · links · edit) if on The Stranger I want it expanded, but on Category:Billy Joel albums I want it collapsed, how would I implement that?

Is this really necessary

Re: This sort of pollution in article space is hardly necessary when you jumped on this before it was even out of the birth canal! Please consider leaving the article space clean, while we sort this out on TFD, there is no reason to air our dirty laundry and junk up articles... it's not like there are many of us that know about the 3-4 pages it's been used on so far, and whether you like it or not, the closing admin will be well advised to subst it in place. Also, please note, I pick up my own dirty socks... and on the rare occasions when I can't get something polished into a general tool, will also {{db-author}} a template that's not working. Being script savvy

Seeing as you are savvy on scripts and presumably .css and browser interactions, how about a little co-operative effort on the general TOC positoning problem I'm trying to solve for the many pages with long right side infoboxes, et. al., ad nauseum. Note, I could care less whether we solve the problem with my new {{TOCnestright}}, or with params in {{TOCright}}, but only that we solve the general problem for the many wiki pages which can use and in some cases, definitely need it.

Please see (Must see differing behavior in both MSIE and another browser, I'm using Firefox (FF) on that).

• Recollect, the key control element is:
  <div style="float:right; margin:1em 0 1em 1.5em;">__TOC__</div>

1. [1] - Concept "control" trial -- TOC positioned slightly down in introduction text, floated right against the busy right margin elements. Seems to be working fine in FF and IE.
2. Daulatabad - Positioned in IE7, looks poor in Firefox
3. History_of_chemistry - (subst'd trial) Positioned in Firefox, floats up and expands out in IE6/7, but at least doesn't look poorly anywhere.
4. Timeline_of_chemistry - Simple element on right enables a more or less identical presentation on FF and IE browsers.
5. succesion of changes wherein several of us have failed. Something in the infobox/TOCnestright templates interactions causes the FF attempt to appear nice, yet creates a huge area of blank space (nearly a full screen page) offset in the IE page views when placed in the best position, or in alternative methods, has the TOC position dependent upon (apparently the upper edge of) the image below the infobox. (I haven't yet ruled out that there may be an open div exiting the infobox.)
6. diff && Kingdom of Aksum -- The direct inspiration for the template version. Note this infobox works fine beside the guts of the template despite it's length.
7. More of a challenge -- note this attempt to tidy the long TOC was a table. (The related edit above (Axum) gave me the idea of trying a div solution.) ... Same page the new template, working fine (so far).
8. A More typical need ... a busy page (Note FA status as in above): Battle of Jutland table solution, && Quick try today: Battle_of_Jutland.
9. Also: Battle_of_Arras

So inasmuch as I'm gonna complain your discussion changes in the {{TOCright/doc}} page are still way to techy written and far too unclear to someone without a background in the topic, perhaps you'd care to demonstrate an equivilent application of your parameters which will and can replace my evoloving {{TOCnestright}}? Bottom line, I suck at HTML, and know css only as something to swear at. By the same token, it is not something that can be mentioned as part of usage either... we have to assume people using the default skin and any browser when writing any page!!! For that reason, I don't and won't ever add extensions to my browsers--I want to see what the customer-users are getting/seeing -- so far as my own fonts and size starting parameters let me! So you up for the challenge... this is a worthwhile problem to solve.

In particular that Bharuch interaction with that infobox has defeated me and David Kernow, so we'd appreciate it if you can beat it in some way... just so we can learn what is causing the aberrant behavior. Thanks // FrankB 19:05, 1 May 2007 (UTC)

Sigh

To add insult to injury, check out the recent history of Battle of Jutland (edit talk links history), whereas of a moment ago in this edit Firefox is locating Template:TOCleft(edit talk links history) in the next section below where the box appears for/in IE7 where I applied it.

Note also the related discussion on my talk (really from Bharuch down) with respect to very different effects using other browser combinations, which have lead me to conclude the various TOC templates are far less robust and universally useful than desired, as the underlying interaction behind wikicoding as implemented by the browsers is interpreted quite differently. Any ideas as to how that {TOCleft} could be anchored as well? To sum it up, what works in IE6/7 fails a significant percentage of the time in Firefox and vice versa. Add in the apparent differences one has reported in Netscape 8.1, and things look to be fairly messy. In short, things aren't robust so far as I can see in any of these TOC templates. Template:UCSB

Hi. I noticed that you used a script to modify a member of one of the two sets of eccentrically modified versions of the .tocolours template design that I put together for use on articles related to several dozen western US colleges affiliated with UC, CSU, OUS, UH, and UA. I'm amazed that your script managed to retain as much fidelity to my original version of UCSB's template as it did. However, there are a couple things that did not come through in the new version, and I am wondering how to fix them. I am not a coder; I had to figure out how .tocolours worked by trial and error, and I might as well ask someone who actually knows what he or she is doing this time before I start tearing things apart to see how they work.

The two major things that don't look quite right are that the new hide button is not taking on the color of the rest of the headline text, though the v,d,e manages to do so, and the subheadings appear as they do on the generic navbox, with the lavendar-box backgrounds and black text, rather than with the clear backgrounds and grey text the navbox used for subheadings before. Please let me know if it is possible to make these things work in the new template format.

Also, please take a look at Template:University of Hawaii, an example of my other series of templates. Though it probably grates against your standardization push, I find that configuration works well for readers as their eyes scan down the page from top to bottom and left to right, and it's visually-pleasing besides. Is that type of template, also based on .tocolours, as amenable to faithful conversion as the UC and UA templates, which are all laid out like UCSB's? If not, is there a way to convert it to be closer to your standard while still retaining its layout? I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks. --Dynaflow babble 19:27, 23 June 2007 (UTC)

Judging from this, the script-based conversion doesn't work as well on the UH-type modified tempates mentioned above. I've reverted Template:Oregon University System until we can figure out how to make it work in the new scheme of things. The primary purpose of the script is to improve the code so more of the articles validate as XHTML strict. Along the way I add niceties as collapsible and v-d-e and using appropriate CSS classes to allow macro navbox management. Now as for the issues you brought up. Collapsible only works on the <th>/! cell in the first row. Because the link color is unchangeable (since it's added via JavaScript) and may blend into the background, I've turned off the autocollapsible functional. For the UH-type navbox, I've having trouble figuring out where to place the v-d-e. The collapsible isn't a big deal and wouldn't work without heading cell. Thanks for the quick reply. Keeping with my intended purpose for the UH-type navbox layout -- moving the less sought-after (though still important) links and text to the bottom and far right of the templates while still having a highly visible visual marker spanning left-hand margin -- I think the v,d,e should probably be aligned at the far right end of the bottom title bar. One more thing I noticed with the UCSB template convrsion while I'm here: The conversion script doesn't seem to make an allowance for centering a second line of text. I'm not sure exactly how to fix that elegantly, but maybe you could give me a suggestion so that I can do touch-up as you move through the UC and UA templates. I've updated {{Oregon University System}} the font-size was rather troublesome to convert properly since you were using fixed units. As for that other thing, it seems to be a bug in the {{tnavbar-collapsible}} template as it render the left float two pixel taller than the right float. While I had know about this before this is the first time its actually producible. If you want a hack you can either change the font so the second line lies either in between or bellow both floats or use <br clear="all"/> to force the second line bellow the floats. —Dispenser 00:55, 24 June 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for your work on the OUS template. It looks great. As far as I know, there are only a few other templates like it floating around currently, unless someone, somewhere, made off with the design and retrofitted it for his or her own purposes. The ones I put together are: {{University of Hawaii}}, {{California State University}}, {{California State Polytechnic University, Pomona}}, and {{San Diego State University}}. There are also the following templates which were done like UCSB's: {{University of California}}, {{University of California, Berkeley}}, {{UC Davis}}, {{UCLA}}, {{University of California, Riverside}}, {{University of California, San Diego}}, {{University of California, Santa Cruz}}, and {{University of Alaska System}}. If you would do the basic conversion tasks on those templates, I could probably do the touch-up work, using your conversions of {{Oregon University System}} and {{UCSB}} as guides. They're all probably going to be in Category:United States education navigational boxes. I guess the six-digit color codes don't matter terribly much for UCSB's navbox, but there are others I have done with very specific colors. I have tried to use institutional identity standards documents to make the navboxes the exact, official colors of each school, and I have found those defined only in six-digit hex and in Pantone, which I converted into six-digit hex codes as well as I could. Is there a technical reason you're limiting the colors to three digits, like making an allowance for displays with lower color depth and such? I would test the color-depth thing myself, but ater de-FUBAR'ing my xorg.conf file once, I don't relish playing around my display settings again anytime soon for anything but the most pressing reasons. If there's a reason to switch the colors back to three digits, I'll change them back. The "clear all" hack worked to center the text in the second line of the title bar, by the way. Thanks for all your work; everything looks great. I only see a couple of weirdnesses that I haven't been able to sort out while doing my touch-ups. Specifically, {{University of California, Santa Cruz}} and {{UC Davis}} seem to be having problems with their images, displaying lavendar outlines where there should just be a transparent background. Do I just have images of the wrong dimensions, or am I missing something obvious? {EDIT:] There also seems to be a little bit of rogue code visible on {{University of California, San Diego}} that I can't figure out how to get rid of (maybe it's the lateness of the hour). --Dynaflow babble 08:54, 25 June 2007 (UTC)

Template:Opera genres

This is to explain that I have reverted your change to this box. The reason is that it follows the Opera Project colour coding and is listed by consensus on the Project page. In any case there really is no reason why these boxes have to conform to someone else's design - WP looks better if tere is some aesthetic variety. Bot creation

I have a question that you may be able to answer. I saw you post on the WT:EL page that you had created a bot. I have no idea how to create bots or i would know the answer to this question. Could a bot be built that would remove duplicate wiki links in an article? I'm trying to read up on what people think of repeatedly used WLs in articles, but it the meantime, was just a question that i thought you might be able to help answer. external link checker spider strange limit operation

This looks like a very useful tool, so of course I pointed it at Wikipedia:WikiProject Oregon's pages. It appears to have hit the limit value and terminated. There are over 4000 pages in article I gave it to link from, Wikipedia:WikiProject_Oregon/Admin, so I tried typing a few different values in the "Page limit" field, but it seems to do something unexpected with the values I typed in (like 30000 and 9000), instead using limits like 441 and 213. It finished after about 12 hours running; too bad other items in the queue were delayed.

• Could it process two in parallel, perhaps choosing the longest and shortest jobs?
• How about a way for the initiating user to stop it?
• The summary screen gives total rows; how about adding subtotals for each color category? Maybe even totals for each status code?

Dead Link tagging

I just noticed you tagged some references as having dead links on the Nine Inch Nails page (dif). They do contain dead links, though they also contain links to archived version of those pages. The dead link is provided for transparency's sake, and is a very normal procedure as far as I know. Therefore, these tags seem unnecessary to me, as well as defeating the whole purpose of providing archived links. Drewcifer 03:13, 12 September 2007 (UTC)

Navbox sandbox

Hi, I noticed your edits in the Navbox sandbox, and have some concerns. The testcases page says "a blank state= should be the same as if it didn't exist". This is not the case. A blank state should cause the navbox to expand by default, while no state default to autocollapse. So using a #switch makes no sense, unless you want to built in an explicit value for state to expand by default (which would break possibly thousands of pages). Also, you took state=plain out of navbar... after I put it into state to make a plain table possible, I can't really understand this move. You've got a fabulous start, and it's going to be very useful, but I'm having a hard time making it go consistently. Probably my fault :-) For example, looking at the articles currently at FAC, it tells me that 2006 Oklahoma Sooners football team has a lot of 404 errors. Can I grab that list of errors for that article only and post it to the FAC for that article as a link? I can't find a place to locate a link for a specific article; are you able to do that and show us how? I started a thread at the talk page of WP:FAC; can you give examples there?
