Hey Diis, HNY. Just for my continuing education, what is the purpose of your most recent edit re: "temporary...FORCETOC"? Is it some kind of protective sheltering device? Does it have to do with the General Sanctions that preside over all Obama articles (WP:GS/BO)?
Buster, no no, that doesn't have anything to do with protecting the article. The FORCETOC forces the article to have a Table of Contents (TOC) no matter how many sections it has. Since we only have three sections in the article (January, References, and See also) it would not have a Table of Contents without the FORCETOC. I wanted it to have a TOC mainly for formatting so that the Barack Obama box at the top right won't interfere with the image I added. I know that I didn't do the refs right re: citenews. I guess I don't follow the instructions correctly. Can you transfer the instructions into 'layman english' for me. Much appreciated. Buster, the {{Cite news}} template is pretty straightforward; you just fill in the known information. So, for example, using the URL you just added to the Obama timeline, I added the information that the news sources gives us: authors, date, publisher, access date. Those are the usual items. You should always try to include the access date so people know that the URL was active at that time. I'll break it down for you:
  • {{cite news
  • |url=http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE70H07Z20110119 → obviously, the URL to the article
  • |first1=Chris |last1=Buckley |first2=Matt |last2=Spetalnick → in this case, the news article had two authors, so you can see there is a place for the first and last names of both, differentiated with numbers; I think this can go up to 9
  • |title=Obama presses China's Hu on currency, rights → the news article's title
  • |publisher=Reuters → the news article's publisher, in this case Reuters
  • |date=January 19, 2011 → the date the news article was published, usually found at the top of the article
  • |accessdate=January 19, 2011}} → the date you saw the news article and added it to Wikipedia; this doesn't have to be the same as the date the thing was published

Please note that "insufficient context" does not apply to foreign language articles (unless you can speak Arabic and assess the content) and that "db-notenglish" is only applicable if there exists a corresponding article on another Wikipedia in a foreign language. New articles in languages other than English should simply be tagged with {{notenglish}} (note: there's no db-) and then listed at WP:PNT for translation, which is what you did too. Hey, I'm wondering why you reverted this edit (with an edit summary of what?)? My change was simply removing an extra newline that was creating ugly blank space on the page (check the difference between my edit and the previous version). You removed a comma that is necessary and you removed a the space following the comma, also necessary. Hardly worth a whole section on your talk page. It's a minor thing. Hi Diiscool: Thanks for backing me up at Laura Dekker, although I know that was not your intention. I have been having an edit war of sorts, with two anonymous ID's (most likely the same person). He went into 8 sailors' pages and moved an invisible comment found in

Here are the recent edits of User:75.47.132.78 and the earlier edits of User:75.47.137.104. The ones that you would be interested in are First change at Laura Dekker and Second change at Laura Dekker by the same individual. It appears that he has an obsession with following the example in the box above, like a robot, without realizing that the invisible comment is not only optional but also dispensable.

I would normally go easy on a newbie, but I thought he should be stopped from making ridiculously useless edits, and told him so on both his Talk Pages -- in a nice way :-)

Yes, I've been watching this for several days and I finally got annoyed by it. I wonder if the IP even knows what Persondata is, but that's irrelevant. I looked at the Abraham Lincoln and Aristotle articles (just convenient, alphabetical) to see what they've done with Persondata there and the invisible comment isn't included. Thanks for doing that. I forgot to mention the other two, Zach and Abby Sunderland, but you saw those too. They were included in the first round by this editor, under the ID of 75.47.137.104 and later repeated under the ID of 75.47.137.101 . If you ask me, it looks like this person has the potential of becoming a vandal, the way he hops around from one ID to another. I've dealt with the anonymous IP vandal issue on Abby Sunderland before (see here for those two IP addresses which were located in the same area of California as the two you are dealing with). I am 99% certain that all of these IPs are the same person. —Diiscool (talk) 16:36, 25 March 2011 (UTC)

Speculation in Abby Sunderland

Just for your information, if you would have read the reference before making a snarky comment in the edit summary, you would have seen that the "speculation" was not from me, but was in the article. So don't make it look like I was speculating! You should have directed the insult to the author of the reference, Diane M. Rey, who even writes in the article that Abby Sunderland herself did the speculating: "She expects to get her pilot's license before she gets her driver's license." This was the last sentence in the article.

Next time read the article before you make a foolish assessment of who did what. I did not speculate, I simply reworded what was in the article so no one could accuse me of "copy/paste." I did read the article before removing that bit and I had no intention of making it sound like you were the one speculating. In fact, that would be clear to anyone who looked at the source. I think you are overreacting. Also, you can use your own judgment about what to include and what not to include from a source. You could not have read the article, since Abby said she expected to finish the pilot's licence first. That means it is a priority for her. That was not speculation at all, but the author recounting what was said to her in the interview. Get your terms right next time. Of course, I assumed you were directing the edit summary at me. Ship class hyphens

Diiscool, I too wondered why the hyphen has never been included in the title. There may once have been a problem with the hyphen character in titles (Wikipedia:CamelCase and Wikipedia?) but this edit introduced the notion that the correct form was hyphenated while retaining the lack of hyphen for the title. When you say "the existing text is synth" also, do you mean just the sentence I edited? "In anticipation of criticism that the legislation was motivated by the upcoming election, the President noted that the election is fourteen months away and that Americans do not have the luxury of waiting fourteen months for jobs to be created. I agree, but I don't know what to do with it. I'm working patiently on talk page on another issue right now, but how exactly does someone "make a statement, under the anticipation of criticism that the legislation was motivated by the upcoming election" anyway? Here is the version back when it was in the lead-in! I moved it down on Sept 30th here and was just as confused about what to do. Yes, that is correct. The whole sentence is synth because whoever wrote it to begin with must have inferred the statement. Nowhere in that reference does it say that the speech was in anticipation of criticism, at least not that I could find. It's a terrible reference anyway since the video is no longer available. There was no confusion. I originally started the article on the cruise ship when she was reported to be sinking, but discovered that I'd been beaten to it. The other article was better developed so I merely turned my article into a redirect. Your creation of an article on a different ship was entirely proper. It was only because I'd left the redirect under the eyes of my patent article watch system that I noticed you'd created the new article. Anyways, all sorted out now. America's Cup

As I am a fellow fan and participant in the sport (not for way too long, it saddens me to say. Life intercedes, unfortunately.) I am super stoked to see as much as I can of the AC and its lead-ups, as the huge catamarans bring back memories. I started out in Hobies, but went to soloing in "A"s and crewing on "C"s. Hi Buster. Sorry I haven't been helping much lately. I'm very busy right now and probably will be at least through March. Anyway, you can create the en dash (as it's called) by typing the HTML coding (without the quotes) where you want it to appear: "–" or you can click on the special character at the bottom of the editing box under the "Insert" dropdown menu. Paul, it is often difficult to read tone on Wikipedia. I'm sure the other editors appreciate your work on the list. It no doubt took some effort. Uploading to Commons if fairly straightforward and wouldn't be bad for you to learn. I don't do it too often (i.e., infrequently enough that I usually have to look up instructions). . That was easy. Even for me. But, now, another problem has surfaced that I can't figure out. In updating the Timeline I have not been able to use the "Templates" or the dropdown menu. The box is visible and the menu appears when clicked but nothing happens. I have to do the "citing" step by step. Buster, I don't know why you wouldn't be able to see/use the cite template menu. It seems to be working fine for me. You have to select "Show edit toolbar" in the "Editing" tab of your preferences. I generally add citations manually. —Diiscool (talk) 20:48, 22 September 2013 (UTC)

On 5K. I wonder if I might interest you in collaborating on a new article. It currently resides at User:Buster7/The McCormick Mansions of Chicago which is really just a collection of info that Ive gathered from here and there. Obviously the info needs to be turned into prose w/ photos and an infobox, etc. It was intended to be my first REAL article project as Ive created only a very few little articles over time but nothing substantial. I feel a need and urgency to involve myself in the real work of creating an encyclopedia rather the dramaboards. The Timelines are still a priority (for at least 3 more years). The Editor of the Week awards are also important. I'll still fight vandals when I see them, greet newbies when I can, give out the 100000K Awards and be a calming voice where I can. Hi, Buster. Thanks for the kind words. I took a quick look at your McCormick mansions page. There's a lot of information there. My initial reaction is that it would be better to create individual pages for each mansion, however I don't know that they would meet WP:GNG (I hope they would). I didn't find any on the National Register of Historic Places but I could have overlooked one. Have you tried the Encyclopedia of Chicago which is available online? Might be something in there. Authority control template

Hi Diiscool;

Thanks for adding the Authority Control template at G. Thomas Tanselle. I tried to add it myself when I created the page, but I couldn't figure out how to fill in the data and couldn't see the info on how to do it on the template page -- is there a way to get it to fill itself in? No problem @CWH:. I think the template will autofill if the authority control data is included on the article's Wikidata page (for Tanselle). It's not on Tanselle's Wikidata page so it won't autofill. I rarely edit Wikidata so I'm not too familiar with that process; instead I manually add the authority numbers which I verify in each authority source. —Diiscool (talk) 15:39, 19 September 2014 (UTC)
