Irish language for NI airports
[edit]Hello there. While I completely agree that Irish is an acceptable and official language for use in Northern Ireland, the reason it's not used on NI airport pages is because it isn't a common usage. Unlike the usage for towns where many English names grew from Irish names, the names of the airports you're providing are simply translations, not officially recognised names that are in use. It was tried a long time ago, but the agreements were to remove them as reliable sources could not be provided and common usage could not be proven. Simply translating the airports names into Irish isn't acceptable on Wikipedia as that is original research. Canterbury Tail talk 04:07, 3 January 2012 (UTC)
- Hello again. Please be aware that the Irish names aren't being deleted because people don't want Irish on their airport pages, it is an official language of NI, but that the translations aren't really being sourced and seem to only be that translations. Just because someone has translated a term into Irish for their own purposes doesn't mean that's the Irish name for the institution. Until the institution comes up with an official translation it's not really it's name. Unless it can be shown to be used officially as the stand in name for the airport in Irish, not just being a translation someone uses, it can't be shown to be reliably referenced on Wikipedia. Anyone can make a translation, even in what appears to be official documentation, but that doesn't make it reliable or the official name in that language. For instance the government departments in NI have been assigned Irish names, and they're not always just direct translations, which makes them official. Coming up with a name for something in another language isn't always translated directly, it's often altered to better suit the target language and audience, which is why someone just taking the words and putting them into Irish can't be used on Wikipedia as a source. And even if something does come up with the name, it needs to be shown it's being used for the English term, not just that the term exists in the source. I hope you understand. - Hi there, no worries I do understand that they need to be sourced properly. I suppose we're in a catch 22 situation with this, until an Irish Language is implement by the NI Executive, then companies will not be concerned with providing an Irish version of their name, regardless of how many people use that version etc. It's just I have a great interest in the Irish language and feel not enough is being down by our government to protect it, for it truly is a language that belongs to all, and I firmly believe that.
