Indian titles
Hi Dianna. So many Indian names are given with titles and things like Shri, Swamiji, etc, and I feel the urge to remove these per MOS, but am not sure whether use of the bare name is too discourteous in Indian culture to allow this. MSU Interview
Dear Diannaa,
My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community HERE, were it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.
So a few things about the interviews:
- Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
- Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
- All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
- All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
- The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.
Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. Because you were too slow to remove it before others (like me) read it...
There is a note on the GOCE page that says ppl should ask you their questions/concerns (technically, that's more of a paraphrase). Anyway, I took a stab at 2 articles, but I can't say I'm totally satified with either effort, and was hoping you could give me your initial opinion. The first article needs a lot more work in many areas I think. In particluar, I didn't know what to do about the sentence in the article that is exactly the same as in the lead. That's all in this article. The second article was of a much higher quality I thought (from a prose standpoint), and I couldn't find much wrong with it. You're correct, the article needs alot of work, if only only the grammar. - Good. Probably a reference to how Justice Jackson pounded Goring on the stand on the point of the Wannsee directive and Goring's responses during the Nuremberg trials would also be good to show how he was totally aware/participant of the Holocaust.

March drive
Hi Dianna, I've started it. I have a local screenshot of the "articles needing copy edit" box, as there aren't so many from 2010 any more and we might want to start recording progress on 2011 too. Not totalled yet, but just in case. --Stfg (talk) 00:30, 1 March 2012 (UTC)
- That's a good idea. I kinda pre-vetted the October articles to help our editors get through them quickly and easily, removing an obvious copy vio and doing scripted clean-up and nominating a few for deletion. If you could watch and update the drive totals at 00:00 UTC if you are available at that time of day, that would be great. I am not always home at that time of day any more but will do it myself if I am. It is not critical, however, that it be done promptly. An hour or two over is not a huge deal.
I am going to try to do some graphing using a spreadsheet program and will prolly put up the first graph after a week or so. Thanks for your help. -- Dianna (talk) 03:32, 1 March 2012 (UTC)
- OK. I wanted to be sure to catch 00:00 last night, and will do so tonight so that we know who did the most on day 1. Will again at the end. During the drive, since 00:00 is midnight for me and will become 01:00 later this month (British Summer Time), I may not make it all that regularly. I think that, during the middle of the month, the daily figures are only a rough indication. I didn't realise you'd been pre-vetting like that. So have I, and am about half way through January 2011 now, but have not been slashing much, from uncertainty as to what principles to apply. Have caught some copyvios, though. I've been more keen to put {{GOCEreviewed}} on long articles, less so on short ones because those are the ones that new copy editors can cut their teeth on without too much sweat. Also, I've been more heavy-handed on the vanity ones, sometimes adding tags. There's a list of what I've GOCEreviewed at User:Stfg/GOCEreviewed. With 45 participants already signed up, we should have another successful drive from the point of view of the number of months we clear from the queue. Unfortunately the total number of articles remaining to be copy edited is creeping up slowly over time, even with the copy edit drives. But it is more important to do quality work than it is to do quantity work. After all our backlog is not so big compared to some of the others on the site.

- Excellent. I'll do tonight's 00:00 and record the top article count somewhere. Come to think of it, that's not so tough as we could get it from the history file, but I'll do it anyway. It's now 46, equalling January, so I'm optimistic about months cleared too. The March 2011 drive finished up with June 2009 cleared, so we're averaging 3/2; not too bad. Braincricket's "word on the streets" was a very good idea and may well have helped this to happen, I think. --Stfg (talk) 13:35, 1 March 2012 (UTC)

Hi. I saw that you cleared two entries at WP:Contributor copyright investigations/Vanished 6551232.
List of astronauts educated at the United States Naval Academy (moved from List of United States Naval Academy alumni (astronauts))
I agree that the lead (actually the whole article, including the table) was copied from List of United States Naval Academy alumni. I placed {{Copied}} templates per WP:Copying within Wikipedia. If you see copying in the future, it would be very helpful if you could place {{Copied}} tags with from and to populated. {{Copying within Wikipedia}} can be used, but I think that no one patrols its maintenance category.
Thanks for updating the dead links. I bumbled through The Royal Gazette's search once before I realized that they had been fixed. I rewrote a sentence about the IATA's survey of overall passenger satisfaction. The majority of the first clause had been copied from its cited source. "North American region" and "overall passenger satisfaction" are fixed phrases, but there is flexibility around them.

Some of the text in the Astronauts section – formatted into the table – predates the user's first edit to the article. Skimming the edit summaries of the relevant history, it looks like he did contribute all of the lead, but there are 581 edits by ten different users. One could comb through the history and argue that the preexisting text has limited creativity, but I think that providing attribution is both easier and safer. - No, rollover words do not count for leaderboard awards. They only count for the regular barnstars. You don't have to add the rollover words at all; one of the coordinators will add them at the end, when the calculations for barnstars are done. --Dianna (talk) 15:50, 3 March 2012 (UTC)

GOCE March drive newsletter
Guild of Copy Editors March 2012 backlog elimination drive update
Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors March 2012 Backlog elimination drive! Here's the mid-drive newsletter. Participation: We have had 58 people sign up for this drive so far, which compares favorably with our last drive, and 27 have copy-edited at least one article. If you have signed up but have not yet copy-edited any articles, please consider doing so. Every bit helps! If you haven't signed up yet, it's not too late. Join us! Progress report: Our target of completing the 2010 articles has almost been reached, with only 56 remaining of the 194 we had at the start of the drive. The last ones are always the most difficult, so thank you if you are able to help copy-edit any of the remaining articles. We have reduced the total backlog by 163 articles so far. Special thanks: Special thanks to Stfg, who has been going through the backlog and doing some preliminary vetting of the articles—removing copyright violations, doing initial clean-up, and nominating some for deletion. This work has helped make the drive a more pleasant experience for all our volunteers. Hi. Regarding this, two things:
- open a tag, close a tag; :-) you opened a <p> tag, but never closed it with </p>; it won't break anything, but you're sending out a message about copy-editing and it's simply good form to write proper HTML, even if MediaWiki doesn't explode when a tag happens to go unclosed...
- please use ~~~~~ (or some other form of timestamp) in posts; archive bots (and people, for that matter) like to be able to figure out when a post was made; yes, talk pages are currently a terribly clunky communication system, but until posts are auto-signed and auto-timestamped, please try to remember to timestamp the bot's posts. :-)

Seeking advice re Adolf Hitler page
I've seen your edit message in the View History for the Adolf Hitler page. I can see that there's a form of citation there that I haven't come across before and with which I am unfamiliar. As far as I'm aware, Maser did more personal research on Hitler's background than anyone else, so I think his book should be included in any list. Where would I add it to the Citation List? The entries do not seem to be in any kind of alphabetical order. Also, I would like to look over the Hitler page carefully and probably make some changes, because I have already removed some very odd information on it (see the most recent items in View History) and expect there will be a lot more. 17:26, 20 March 2012 (UTC)

- Thanks for your assistance, especially taking the trouble to provide me with the full entry for the Reference list. I've just removed what I assume to be a pice of vandalism on the page, a joke reference to Rudolf Vrba. From randomly looking at entries on the View History page, it seems to have been there for some time. Do you happen know whether there is a method of pinning down who made that entry, and also whether there is a way in which that contributor can be blocked in future? I will look at your edits in more detail later (I have to go to work now); what I have had time to review so far looks helpful. There was a tool at http://toolserver.org/~soxred93/blame/ but it looks like it's gone 403 on us so the history of that edit would have to be found manually. I wouldn't worry about trying to track down who added it; if it's been there for a long time no one will block for it at this late date. - Saw you reverted my edit on responsibility for the Reichstag Fire. Neither Bullock nor Shirer presented any firm evidence that the Nazis did it. Even to this day we can only speculate, as they did. You'll know that Goering is reputedly on record as saying he was responsible, but I don't want to go there. It would lead to a discussion and we'd be there forever! We would never reach a conclusion beyond the one I stated: the Nazis gained most from the fire. Kim Traynor 14:49, 22 March 2012 (UTC)

- The way I worded it was that both of these biographers held the opinion that it was true. Shirer was a man of deep feelings and strong opinions. No fence-sitter, he. The Nazis had the most to gain from the fire, it is true, but Shirer and Bullock do not actually say that. So that is why I made the amendment to the text; it more closely aligns with what the sources actually say; not the stuff that you or I believe to be true or what we believe the article should say. My personal opinion: Göring did not personally set the fire, but he was one of the organisers.
I was rushing to get to work and my earlier message may have been a little terse, so I just wanted to elaborate a bit about the other change: Saying stuff like "some historians claim" is considered weasel words, so unless we have the space and inclination to say specifically which historians are making the claim, it's better to not use those kinds of phrases. Well that should mean that in cases where consensus is wanted, it can always be a good idea to start discussing what all reasons behind all choices. What I wanted to discuss is really why you think that information isn't "important" while other information is. Sometimes I want an article some way and I don't want to explain all those endlessly boring reasons, but there's no ideal way to get around making the choice between explaining myself, and leaving the topic (which I rarely do), it's a common dilemma on editing Wikipedia: annoying, but what can we do with it? That seems very convincing, and indeed it would feel completely correct if I agreed (so again, I wouldn't think differently if I were you). However, I, with more time to think about it, say that none of what Hitler did (such as "his artwork, drawing cartoons and instructions for an army newspaper", having "a second bout of blindness" learning of defeat, etc.) during his time in the army is really worth mentioning compared to what he does as a dictator. I don't like sounding like this, but according to this reason (which I would feel completely correct agreeing with), the whole "early years" section should be removed. Are we going to do that? - Yes, true, but the source of the information is only checked to see whether or not the information is reliable or not, and does not have the final say about the information's importance. The center point all my reasons hover around is that how significant an event is does not solely determine its importance on an article. I didn't believe in this center point in the past the same way you don't, because it's not something that would be understood to be accepted easily. But look at everything on the article... for example when Hitler described the war as "the greatest of all experiences", does those words themselves have any significance coming from a low rank soldier? No, but the words tell a lot about how he thought about the war, and it's the reasoning that caused him to say that, not the words themselves that's significant, and information giving clues about something significant is important to the article even though it's not significant in itself. My edit does add clues to the dictator's views about concepts such as that of the Christmas truce.
- (I'm sorry about wasting all this time on the tiniest detail, but this is what I meant when I talked about how frustrating it is when Wikipedia's "dilemma" either forces people to give in or to explain all those endless, boring reasons, and it's why I often have the urge to rather edit war than to explain myself. I did run several scripts on your article—British spelling, British dates, and the dashes script—and no changes were required.
