Arbitration

  • Following the banning of an editor by the WMF last year, the Arbitration Committee resolved to hold an RfC regarding on-wiki harassment. The RfC has been posted at Wikipedia:Arbitration Committee/Anti-harassment RfC and is open to comments from the community.
  • The Medicine case was closed, with a remedy authorizing standard discretionary sanctions for all discussions about pharmaceutical drug prices and pricing and for edits adding, changing, or removing pharmaceutical drug prices or pricing from articles.

Done. I would (probably) have have done this next month, in any event, since The Anomebot2 tags articles missing coordinates each month and I usually follow the bot around, picking off the easy ones. Deor (talk) 14:43, 12 July 2020 (UTC)

Americas total population edit

Hi Dear. I'm sorry if this is not the right place to talk, but I couldn't find another way to reach out to you. The source I had added, the CIA Factbook, gives a total number for the population of North America and South America, so I summed them up and because it's a variable number that tends to get bigger, I used a > sign, to not make the number static. Is there a rule about citations being exact? Could I use the citation if I use the exact sum of both numbers?

Thanks! Gootle84 (talk) 01:37, 21 September 2020 (UTC)

@Gootle84: When I clicked on the link you gave as a reference, it led to a "Population Distribution" page that gives no figures for the populations of any countries or continents. The only information it contains about North and South America is that they have about 8% and 6% of the world's population, respectively. (It's also worth noting that the Americas article currently contains at least four different figures for the total population of the Americas: 964,920,000 in the infobox, "over a billion" in the lead, 973,186,925 in the "Total" row of the table in the "Countries and territories" section, and "about 985 million" in the "Demography" section. I assume that the discrepancy is due to differences in sources or differences in times the figures were added.)
As for your questions, according to WP:CALC there's nothing wrong with simply adding figures for North and South America to arrive at a total for the Americas. You will, however, have to find a source that explicitly states such figures. Myself, I'd avoid the vagueness of ">1,000,000,000" and give the actual total reached by the addition, which is likely to be a rounded estimate in any event. About 6 years ago you added some coordiates that put this part in the middle of the atlantic ocean. I've removed them but I don't know where it actually is.©Geni (talk) 07:29, 19 October 2020 (UTC)

@Geni: Yes, that was clearly a copy/paste error on my part. (I copied the numerical value of the latitude in both the latitude and longitude fields of the template.) I've readded the coordinates correctly. Deor (talk) 16:43, 19 October 2020 (UTC)

Discussion of guidelines for short descriptions

There’s a new proposal to add dating recommendations to the guidelines for short descriptions. Short descriptions are a prominent part of the mobile user experience, but the discussion so far has had relatively few voices. Since you are a top contributor to one or more Manual of Style pages, I thought you might be interested. Cheers —jameslucas ▄▄▄ ▄ ▄▄▄ ▄▄▄ ▄ 01:44, 1 December 2020 (UTC)

Happy First Edit Day!

pronunciation "inferno"

would you please rethink your revert in the article: Inferno (Dante)? I have never heard that an italian would pronounce "inferno" like this. espescially guys coming from Florence(, where the purest italian is spoken,) would pronounce it with a very clear 'n'. for the sake of a correct lemma: please do your own research in the case you disagree with me...(note only note '5'...i read this note and i couldn't believe it) Joachim1970 (talk) 22:53, 20 December 2020 (UTC)

And secondly you should doubt note 5 concerning -nf-, -nv-, etc., find reliable sources and then remove it ;-) Joachim1970 (talk) 23:28, 20 December 2020 (UTC)

And yes: I read the discussion between peter238 and trovatore about that issue. peter238 introduced this "theory". reliable sources concerning an alleged assimilation of n->m haven't been given. because there aren't any. neither on the internet nor in the books... Joachim1970 (talk) 23:51, 20 December 2020 (UTC)

Ok, I've found sources supporting the assimilation-issue. for example: https://it.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Consonante_nasale

Allora lasciamo perdere, vabbene? ;-) Joachim1970 (talk) 00:09, 21 December 2020 (UTC)

@Joachim1970: The only reason I reverted you is that Help:IPA/Italian seems to represent current consensus on how Italian should be transcribed in IPA on Wikipedia. If you think that needs to be changed, you could try establishing a new consensus through discussion at Help talk:IPA/Italian. Deor (talk) 17:55, 21 December 2020 (UTC)

Celestial spheres

Re [1], I know that commons:Category:Celestial spheres exists, but that seems to match Celestial sphere rather than Celestial spheres. The second seems to be specifically about the rotating cosmological spheres. Probably we need a new Commons category for it, what do you think? Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 18:00, 29 December 2020 (UTC)

@Mike Peel: Yes, that category seems to include images (and subcategories) relevant to both WP articles. I don't hang out at Commons much, so I don't know a lot about categorization there, but a splitting of that category seems logical. Deor (talk) 18:10, 29 December 2020 (UTC)
OK, I've started commons:Category:Celestial spheres (cosmological model) and linked to it from the article, feel free to add more images to it if you want. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 18:16, 29 December 2020 (UTC)
