I have never posted on this site before so hope I do this correctly.YOur question of Tonka toys caught my eye.I live in MOund Minnesota.Tonka Toys has left a mixed legacy there.People have fond memories of when the factory was up and running there. The town enjoyed a very stable economy then. However it was devestating to them when the company suddenly pulled up stakes and left for Mexico. That is where we always were told it went, anyway. You may not want to hear the rest of this story since your family was involved in the company.Part of the reason the company left was apparantly to avoid the EPA (maybe at that time it was OSHA ???) and any fines they might slapped with for their considerable amount of dumping they did of toxic chemicals into Lake MInnetonka. I am in fact trying to find out more about that aspect of the comapanies history. WHich is how I came across your post. You see, for a little town MOund has an INCREDIBLY inordinately HIGH number of children with freakish birth defects. There is an incredibly high rate of autism and other nueological disorders. There is also a very high rate of cancer ammune disorders. My son has autism and a variety of other health problems. He and my daughter both have severe immune defiencies. My doctor tells me people need to find out about the dumping....that in the medical community we are tagged with the moniker "PFM"(patient from Mound) this tells them that we will have a great many health problems ,most of which will baffle them. There was a doctor several years ago who was conducting a study but as soon as it was discovered his clinic was shut down.I dont know all the details, it was all very bizarre. He was our doctor so I know it was true.I just dont know who did the running out or how. ANyway...when lost lake was uncapped, only a few years back, the level of toxins were not lower as expected but higher, so I have heard.I would like to be able to verif this and find out what the "toxins" are that Tonka Toys were dumping. That is the legacy of Tonka Toys in our area.Of course, I am not an EPA expert ,just a concerned parent.I want some answers but it is almost impossible to get any!! So my info to you is very incomplete at best. However if anyone has any ifo concerning this aspect of Tonka TOys history...I would like some information.
