[edit]What we have here is a Grade 1 listed building where the church wardens and builder have seen fit, (in the last 13 years) to substantially alter a Medieval chancel by knocking of the cross, removing the coping, lowering the gable end, roofing over the end and adding fascia boards.
OK! Maybe that coping and cross were 19th-century restorations; maybe they were not. But regardless of that, the Medieval chancel-end required a coped gable, not the present 21st-century version of a Georgian arrangement. The twee little fascia boards are the last straw! They should be removed.
I do understand that gables that rise beyond the roofline are subject to the ingress of water in high winds. Almost every Medieval church has the problem. (On the other hand, the roof itself endures high wind very much better than the overhang arrangement.)
The solution is to fix the flashing, not remove the gable. It is disgraceful that someone could authorise a change like that to a Grade 1 listed building.
It's always a mistake to show me highly detailed architectural photos. The first thing I look for is tile-slip! I hope that you are not on Parish council! I'll go and brew coffee before I look further.
