Welcome to Wikipedia

[edit]

Thanks for your great edits! It's good to have someone else with an interest in taxonomy (and who can cite refs!).I notice from your work that you're interested in birds, so I invite you to come check out Wikipedia:WikiProject Birds. Just one brief bit of advice, where you have a species that's a monotypic genus, like the Golden-winged Grosbeak, the genus page can be turned into a redirect. I have done this for Rhynchostruthus. Anyway, cheers, and I look forward to see you around. Sabine's Sunbird talk 20:18, 9 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

HBW reference

[edit]

Hi. Good on you for adding a reference to the Handbook of the Birds of the World to all those articles. I'm not sure if you realise that we have an article on HBW, so you may wish to amend your additions to include an internal link to it, as I've done in the previous sentence. Also, as it's a book, house style is to use italics. All the best. SP-KP (talk) 16:42, 25 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • Hi pal, I'm a bit erm...slow! I only realised after ~200 +refs. Oops! I've been collecting these volumes from the start but only recently considered editing them in en masse to Wikipedia. Huge job just started, but I've learned a lot already. Great fun! As for the ones not yet linked to the HBW wiki - i'll link them as I go. Cheers for the advice, and any help would be most welcome.Deargan (talk) 17:36, 25 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

And while we're at it

[edit]

It looks to me like the date of volume 12 of HBW is 2007, not 2006 (as you said in Periparus]] and Dohrn's Thrush-babbler).

Also, it's good to add a reference, in the style used in the article, where HBW is referred to. For example, in Periparus, did you add HBW to say that they recognize the genus? In that case it would be good to add "(del Hoyo et al. 2007)" to the appropriate sentence and mention that HBW as well as the AOU recognizes the genus. I'd make this change myself, but I don't HBW.

It's great to get references from it, though. Keep it up! —JerryFriedman (talk) 17:04, 25 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • Thanks! I'll need to check the tits etc again. HBW does indeed use the recent generic splits of the old Parus. I'll get around to filling in details of different treatments by the various authorities at some point. Any help would be most appreciated. Deargan (talk) 17:36, 25 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

HBW References

[edit]

Hi. While the HBW is obviously notable, I fail to see the use of the articles HBW Volume 1 - Chapter References e.a. Just repeating the references from a certain book is not the same as creating an article, and can even be considered a copyright violation. Even disregarding that, it is a rather uninformative series of aricles, without context. Fram (talk) 12:09, 7 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • Hi Fram. It has always been my intent to use these references in expanding bird articles but I felt the need to create an initial framework (for myself and other Bird-project users) to refer to when editing within such a massive subject i.e. Birds. HBW is peerless in this subject and each of the chapters could stand alone or indeed easily be published as separate books. I know the chapter references do little to enhance the HBW article, so if you insist I will remove them to the reference list on my user page.Deargan 12:28, 7 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I think this may be better indeed, either userfy them or put them on subpages of the Wikipedia:WikiProject Birds, where they are more easily accessible for all participants. I don't think list of references as such are good article content. I'll give you some time to move them, couild you drop me anote when you are done? I'll undelete the one I deleted, I hadn't noticed then that they were part of a series. Fram (talk) 12:40, 7 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. In Sericomyia superbiens, you recently added a link to the disambiguation page Müller (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Hello, I'm BracketBot. I have automatically detected that your edit to Ocyptamus may have broken the syntax by modifying 1 "()"s. If you have, don't worry, just edit the page again to fix it. If I misunderstood what happened, or if you have any questions, you can leave a message on my operator's talk page.
