[edit]The Philadelphia Negro
I want to improve the Wikipedia page about W.E.B. Du Bois’ study The Philadelphia Negro. This study was the first case study of a black community in the U.S. Du Bois sought to not only identify that a majority of Philadelphia Blacks were oppressed, he also wanted to understand and explain why and how. He was one of the first Black males to conduct research regarding what made African American lives so much different and harder than those of White U.S. citizens. The Philadelphia Negro’s Wikipedia page does not have any information about what problems Du Bois identified in the communities and the results of his studies. I plan on exploring the actual study as a primary source and add information regarding the facts of his study. In the studies “The Problem” section on the fourth page he explains why he chose Philadelphia for the study and specific problems they suffered due to extreme disparities between demographics unlike any other city in the country. I think that this is important knowledge that should be present in the Wikipedia entry.
Larry Hoover
Larry Hoover’s Wikipedia page doesn’t have much information about his early life nor is there information about his positive mobilization efforts. I plan on adding accurate historical information about the programs and clubs he directed. Larry Hoover is important to black politics because he knew and understood Black issues extremely well. So well in fact he was able to speak hope into the ears of the Chicago Black community when the U.S. president couldn’t.
Mayor Marion S. Barry Summer Youth Employment Program
In Washington D.C. there is a government funded program called Mayor Marion S. Barry Summer Youth Employment Program. This program provides jobs to middle school students, high school students, and young adults that are residents in D.C. during the summer. This program provides work experience, money, and office skill for kids and young adults. The criteria for the program is very inclusive. There is currently no page for the Summer Youth Employment program on Wikipedia. This is exactly the type of program that encourages black people to follow and have faith in the government. It was founded by Marion Barry and it raises the political efficacy in the Washington D.C. Black community, for that reason it is important to Black Politics.
