Swag/schwag
I was just wondering why you put "a slang term for promotional items" under schwag rather than swag, the original article spelt it swag. I've never seen this meaning in use, but swag sort of makes sense if you think of it as plunder or booty. :) fabiform | talk 07:22, 12 Feb 2004 (UTC)
- I could of course have thought to do a google search before asking you this. It's obviously very commonly spelt schwag for this meaning, sorry! :) fabiform | talk 07:27, 12 Feb 2004 (UTC)
Thanks for finding that photograph to illustrate "tank top." If it's not a trade secret... how did you find it? Even if there's a search engine for the usmc site or even if you used Google image search, it must have taken some clever lateral thinking to come up with it, given that the phrase "tank top" does not appear in the image's filename or accompanying text. U.S Regions Template & Infobox
Please review the proposed U.S. Regions template and infobox. The current proposal would only be for official regions. Please do not make any changes to the page until everyone has had a chance to view the curret proposal. Please signal that you have reviewed the proposal on it's talk page. Please also make any comments you have over the proposed template and infobox ont the propasal talk page as well. You can find the proposal here: Official Region Template and Infobox
- JCarriker 21:52, 26 Feb 2004 (UTC)
- Please post on the talk page at: Official Region Template and Infobox. I don't have a problem with any of your edits, but please try to reach some consensus before making any changes, the other project members didn't even see the first version. I have some comments that I will post on the talk page, but I believe the infobox, with your edits, will pass largely unamended. :)

i just found out that you've written a lot of gay related topics! That's soooo cool! I have to start working and adding them to the list and then translating them all into Chinese :) Good job! ^_^ --Yacht (Talk)Q 14:16, Feb 27, 2004 (UTC)
- Davodd, could you clarify what should be added to the years in gay rights list? -- Kimiko 17:52, 27 Feb 2004 (UTC)
I've made a 2000 page for the years in gay rights to add the equalisation of the age of consent (finally!) in the UK. Have I got the template right? If this is fine I'll add some more UK stuff. Secretlondon 22:27, Feb 27, 2004 (UTC)
No problem - we need to add all the decriminalisation of homosexuality dates in various places, the new partnership register stuff... Massive amount of work to do! Secretlondon 22:54, Feb 27, 2004 (UTC)

Speedy deletion
Hi, may I ask why you put a msg:delete on Image:US Map States same-sex.jpg? If it's a misnamed image that you reuploaded, it can be a speedy deletion, but otherwise it might have to go through WP:IFD. Dori | Talk 14:49, Mar 3, 2004 (UTC)
- Ah I see, my fault then. I should have been more careful and checked the talk page. Dori | Talk 19:10, Mar 3, 2004 (UTC)
- I am still a bit unclear. On the talk page you say that the new image is under the same name as the image you want to be deleted. I see that there are two versions of that image. If I delete the page, they will be both deleted. Please check that you have the correct file name in the talk page. Dori | Talk 19:15, Mar 3, 2004 (UTC)

What's the difference!? You never said formatting was an issue? I don't believe formatting CAN be an issue because the format of the PDF file is different to the format on Wikipedia. Why are you creating such a fuss about abosolutely nothing of any worth. And if anything the format presented on the BBC website [1] is closer to to the temp version. Question about cities pages
I noticed that you were a member of the U.S. Cities Wikiproject, and I was wondering if you could give some advice on that topic. In Wisconsin (and perhaps other states, I'm not sure), every part of the state is a part of a town; however, parts of towns can incorporate, and occasionally they'll choose their city or village name as the same as the town. On Wikipedia, these have been disambiguated with "Name (city), Wisconsin" and "Name (town), Wisconsin." The problem is, most county and other pages do not link to these titles with (city) or (town) in them, even the ones made by Rambot, which I believe created the convention of (city) and (town) in the first place. My question is, should I create disambiguation pages for these shared names, like I have with Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin (I created that one with all the city info before finding Sturgeon Bay (city), Wisconsin). This would at least cut back on the red on pages like List of cities in Wisconsin and each county page (ex. Kewaunee County, Wisconsin's list of cities; a couple are red for this reason) and also cut back on the orphaned pages without redirect, which most of these pages are. Thanks for your time. Bamos 00:51, 21 Mar 2004 (UTC)
- Wisconsin has 1,266 towns. You have your work cut out for you. Dooes the list of cities only include incorporated cities? or does it include towns, too? Davodd 01:11, Mar 21, 2004 (UTC)
- I'm only talking about places where there the towns and cities have the same name...looking at the list of WI cities, it's probably around 100 cases, not more than 200. Is it worth the page creations? Bamos 04:16, 21 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Time Zone Problem
I just redirected the time zone in the table at Los Angeles, California from Pacific Standard Time Zone to Time_zone#UTC-8_(PST_-_Pacific_Standard_Time). While it's proper to refer to "Pacific Standard Time", it only applies in the Winter months. To me, it doesn't make much sense to have a seperate page for every time zone. Perhaps this should go in the table template at the Cities Wikiproject. Mackerm 20:43, 24 Mar 2004 (UTC)
- Well, you're right. There are issues, though. The page I linked to has international information (as well as the all-important exclusion of the northern 4/5 of Malheur County, Oregon. Plus Nevada and Northern Idaho.) The pages which link from here are United States definitions only. I assume that time zones are regulated by some international body, and single-country definitions could be redundant for Wikipedia. Mackerm 22:17, 24 Mar 2004 (UTC)
- Time zones are not regulated by any international body. All 'time zones' are created and regulated solely by sovereign nations for their own territory. Only in recent decades has some semblance to any 'international standard' appeared. Soon I will modify Time zone to make this clear. -- Joe Kress 23:59, Apr 23, 2004 (UTC)
Just to tell you I've done an article about (William) Norman Birkett, alternate British Judge at the Nuremberg Trials (largely in connection with another matter). Although William was his first name he was normally referred to as Norman Birkett. Dbiv 13:28, 3 Apr 2004 (UTC)
US Regions Page Rewrite
I have rewritten the project page and made some clarifacations and renamed some terms. To avoid editing conflicts please do not edit the pages until everyone has had a chance to review it. I have archived the talk pages, so please post your comments there, or at least acknowledge that you have viewd the page and had no comments. Since there were no objections to the non-official (now Non-Census Bureau) regions infoboxes or your parentage proposal, I have included them in the page.
Please review the page as soon as convenient.

You should notice some new buttons and options available to you, as you have been sysopped -- you are now a Wikipedia administrator, with all the attendant rights and responsibilities. You are asked not to use your new abilities until you have reviewed the Wikipedia:Administrators' reading list -- if you have questions about the limitations of your responsibilities or where you should be active, ask any admin. Preferably, ask several -- it's nice to get a sense of the range of perspectives. Finally, welcome to an unusual and diverse group, Davodd -- remember that most of the cruel things said to you should be ignored, but that all of the serious criticism is very important to consider. It is difficult to be a user with privileges and responsibilities in a community that prides itself on equality and a lack of hierarchy. I wish you the best of luck -- if you ever want help, advice, or just someone who knows what it's like, my talk page is always open. Happy administering, Jwrosenzweig 21:09, 28 Jun 2004 (UTC)
Help on Medal Tables
Hi Davodd, I noticed that you made amendments to the 2004 Summer Olympics medal count which included taking out the sentence about updates referenced from the BBC website. We added this after much discussion on the talk pages about how the medal tables should look and the sentence was to ensure many differrent people were not constantly updating the table everytime they see a result. (this could lead to our table showing hundreds more medals awarded than truly were. We chose the BBC site for independent verification of the table being correct. We could not see any other way of people knowing when and/or what events had been added to the table. Could we possibly have that sentence back in or have you any suggestions for how to keep the table correct?? We purposely did not use the official Athens 2004 website for reference as this tends to be updated erratically and that website is frrezing up quite a lot, obviously due to the amount of traffic it receives. (unlike the nice new Greek Roads and tram system).Scraggy4 22:11, 16 Aug 2004 (UTC)
- Just noticed noticed that you have also removed the explanation about updating the medal template that updates the medal table on the main 2004 Summer Olympics.Scraggy4 22:17, 16 Aug 2004 (UTC)
- Thanks for the nice reply Davodd, when you didn't answer last night I asked at the village pump to see what style rules we had actually fallen foul of. The problem with the instruction being on the edit page is that the two links previously on the page now have to be copied and pasted to see what they are. They did seem to get a bit shirty in their replies at the pump but my main point was that the instructions/information that we had placed there were only temporary whilst the games are on to ease to use of the olympic pages. My argument being that surely the manual of style rules are not there to create difficulties but to aid users and during the games there is a high probability of new users looking at the pages who may not know they have to also look at the talk pages and edit pages to gain an overall view of the page. As I mentioned at the village pump surely the disambig message that appears on pages and copyright messages are also instructions to users. The difference being we know the definite time scale of how long the instructions that we used would be there when other messages appear on pages indefinitely.
I am sure you can understand how much work is involved in trying to keep the olympic pages up to date and formatted consistently and as many people are involved it has been a challenge to work on these without causing arguments when people have so many different points of view. Up to now I think we have been doing a fairly good job but I imagine that we will have to wait until the end of the games until we can format one style across all event pages. Any help on these is gratefuly received. I will of course not replace the messages as it seems to be such a bad thing to do but retain the feeling that we should probably be more flexible about these things when pages are obviously under constant change during an event.Scraggy4 11:47, 17 Aug 2004 (UTC)
You may have already spotted your mistake, but you appear to have added 2004 data to the 2000 page for the Olympic nmedal tables. BTW you might want to look at 1996 Summer Olympics, to which Bobblewik has also added the bogus pop/medal stats. Mintguy (T) 00:55, 21 Aug 2004 (UTC)
- I think that the information in what should simply be a medal table, is completely misleading, inaccurate and bogus. The population of a country has no bearing on pool of potential competitors, the size of its olympic team, and it's ultimate tally of medals. The pop stats themselves are ambiguous. For example; does the the populaion stat for France include Corsica or the other overseas French territories from which competitors for the French nation may be drawn? Does the population for Israel include those living in the occupied territories? It's all bogus. Together with the fact that what is listed as one medal on the table may have actually been won by many individuals competing in a team event. Mintguy (T) 01:16, 21 Aug 2004 (UTC)
Thanks
Thank you for the barnstar. Appreciate it. Yardcock 16:49, Aug 24, 2004 (UTC)
Steam Punk
As I understand from the steam punk article, the genre proper only began in the 90's, and refers to retro Victorian settings. Why then are you adding classic Victorian scifi novels to the category? Lacrimosus 22:24, 31 Aug 2004 (UTC)
Steampunk
Putting back some films you removed from the list. Steampunk doesn't have to be a sci-fi film, nor does it have to be set in a Victorian era, although it usually is. The list was not a bunch of nonsense, and did not need to be changed, expecially after dealing with another admin having already looked it over.
Found this on one of the pages linked from the article, the first link in fact, Victorian Adventures in a Past That Wasn't:
"What is Steampunk? Generically, the term Steampunk is used to include fictional works from the genres of Victorian-Edwardian Science Romance, Gothic horror, Steampunk, Imperialist Adventure, Voyages Extraordinaires and Edisonades. Specifically, Steampunk is a relatively new genre within Science Fiction set upon imitation or critique of the style, technology, characters and/or themes of Scientific Romance, Imperialist Adventure, Edisonades and Voyages Extraordinaires, often with the inclusion of Gothic horror elements. There are actually 2 sub-genres of Steampunk: Historical Steampunk, and Fantasy Steampunk. Recently, Steampunk has begun diversifying out from a genre of Science Fiction to a genuine sub-culture. How this is translation from literature to lifestyle can occur is a subject of ambiguity and debate, but most often it includes interest in Victoriana and Neo-Victorianism.
What is Historical Steampunk? Historical Steampunk is any work of Science Fiction that satisfies the requirements of Steampunk while being set at some point in Earth's history. This is commonly known as the "alternative history" genre. Historical Steampunk can then be divided up into further sub-genres, including Victorian Steampunk, Western Steampunk and Mediaeval Steampunk. What is Victorian Steampunk?
Victorian Steampunk is any work of modern Science Fiction that satisfies the requirements of Steampunk and is set in the “Long Victorian” period, roughly from the beginning of the Industrial Revolution through the end of the Edwardian era. Examples include Dinotopia by James Gurney, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen comic, and The Difference Engine by Willam Gibson and Bruce Sterling.
What is Western Steampunk? Western Steampunk is any work of modern Science Fiction that satisfies the requirements of Steampunk and set in the "wild west" period of North American history or in another setting comparable to the “wild west”. Examples include Wild Wild West starring Will Smith and Kevin Kline. What is Mediaeval Steampunk?
Medieval Steampunk is any work of Science Fiction which satisfies the requirements of Steampunk while being set in the Middle Ages (The Fall of Rome to the Renaissance). Examples include A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court by Mark Twain.
What is Fantasy Steampunk? Fantasy Steampunk is any work of Fantasy fiction which satisfies the requirements of Steampunk, mixing magic and steam power. Examples include the Castle Falkenstein role-playing game, the anime Escaflowne, and the computer game Arcanum."
Maybe reading this will show you that a better definition needs to be put up, instead of choppoing things out without researching them. Hellboy and Van Helsing are even reviewed on that page, while Sleepy Hollow is a review link from it.

Wikipedia style and film
Wondering about your changes to LGBT film. Where is the style guidelines on Film that you refer to? I'm specifically wondering about the removal of Angels in America. I don't think it is a TV mini-series, but a two part movie that happened to be made for HBO. I see nothing wrong with putting made for TV movies on the list. It seems like an artificial distinction to keep Angels off the list. --Samuel Wantman 01:26, 6 Sep 2004 (UTC)
