AOL

I see that you reverted my contribution to the AOL page. I do not see what was wrong with my addition, as the current America Online article fails to mention this usage of AOL. A previous version did mention similar usage; however, the article has since progressed to become "about the company" (and noting this usage on that page seems inappropriate). IMHO, the usage I noted should be mentioned somewhere and the AOL page appears to be a good place. I would appreciate it if you will give me a reason for your revert. I also posted to Talk:America Online.

Thank you for your response. I have had the same problems with timeouts on Wikipedia so I know that it is annoying. I understand your reasons for not wanting a disambiguation page (especially since it takes so long to get a page from Wikipedia). About marking edits as "minor"

Hi, I'd like to make you aware (or remind you) that the "minor edit" checkbox on the editing page for an article is only to be used for typo and presentation corrections. As Help:Minor edit says, "any change that affects the meaning of an article is not minor, even if it is only a single word." The main article on this is Wikipedia:Minor edit.

I've noticed that almost all your edits are marked minor, while a bit of examination suggests that less than half of them should be. Perhaps you need to alter your default on your Special:Preferences page to turn the "minor" checkbox off (its under "Editing"). Thanks for fixing this. -R. S. Shaw 04:14, 2005 Jan 26 (UTC)

Capital letters

i have not found an explicit policy at Wikipedia! it is taken for granted it would be obligatory because it is taught this way in schools.

indeed, it is just a way to emphasize, and for instruction lists it does not make any difference, as long as one applies consistency and logic. the point is that writing things in big letters looks nasty. writing in small letters is easier to read and faster to type.

i have said nothing against interpunctation.

I believe I know how to copy my comment box and move it to your talk page, achanging it as necessary for your Talk page data. I like it becase it autmatically puts new stuff at the bottom, easier to find and less chance of screwing up earlier messages. Ecoregions

I saw you were working on List of ecoregions and wanted to point out that while the complete list is not yet up anywhere on Wikipedia, the data is all there, but divided between the various biome and ecozone pages. I'll consider that. I've been here about a year or two but still, I've never really thought out that. I do agree that linking dates and over-linkage gets really annoying but I didn't think anyone would notice. Jocelyn Guidry deletion

George Passantino is a reasonably famous artist in the Southern New England area and is recently deceased. One of the important effects of an artist is to follow both his past influences (listed but not yet completed) and his ongoing effects. George Sutherland, a senior artist and student of George Passantino, is also a noted artist in Southern New England. Jocelyn Guidry is his senior student following in the same tradition. Before I can even begin to build the tree of influence of George Passantino you've begun deleting it. Why?

I'm [| Tim Daly], the author of the page. I've set out to detail the artist George Passantino who recently passed away. I'm tracing the lineage of influence backward and forward. You deleted a page seconds after it was posted. I had not yet gotten a chance to fully research Jocelyn Guidry except to note that she is related to Ron Guidry. I was busy looking backward toward George's past influence.

Please restore the page. If I don't find anything of interest in the future I'll gladly delete it. However George Passantino is, locally, a major artist and it will take some time to complete the research.

It seems rather judgemental of you to destroy hours worth of searching without contacting me first. Please take the time to at least ask before you destroy my work.

me again... I read the candidates for speedy deletion section and the criteria do not seem to apply. It hardly seems worth trying to contribute to this site if you're just going to delete work. Why not try to do some research and update the entry? I was under the impression that the key idea of Wikipedia was that people who knew more details would make the entries more detailed. Your bio does not show me why you're qualified to judge artists from southern New England and you clearly didn't take time to evaluate the worth of the entry (or your searching abilities far exceed mine).

I may have been too hasty; wikipedia has had a rash of vandalism lately, apparently due to the Wired magazine article, and my first assumption of the article was that they were cut-and-paste of non-notables - America, after all, has hundreds of thousands of art teachers who have had pictures exhibted at some sort of show. (This has become a real plague, with people dumping their personal Web page into wikipedia). Sometimes a bout of deleting nonsense and vandalism can be so irritating that everything starts to look like bilge, and it sounds like I over-reacted: I would be happy to resurrect the page but, oddly, I cannot find George Passantino in the deletion log. Was that the name of the article?

And why don't you create an account [[1]]? It makes it easier to sign your posts, so people can send you comments on articles.

Well, clearly your reading skills need polishing. I have an account, listed in the hyperlink in this same article. Note that this edit is titled "Jocelyn Guidry deletion", not "George Passantino deletion" so it is reasonable to expect that we're talking about the Jocelyn Guidry page. Further, I can easily find George Passantino by typing that string into the search box and pressing Go. Lastly, *YOU* were the one who deleted the Jocelyn Guidry page so claiming confusion about the deleted item seems disingenuous at best. Since you're clearly putting more effort into destroying and blocking my work than attempting to contribute I'll simply take my efforts elsewhere.

Being an editor is a serious responsibility and you fail to take it seriously.

Whoa - calm down, my huffy friend. Jocelyn Guidry page is restored, and wikified (don't put exterior links in the text, please). But it will probably get deleted soon by somebody else unless you edit it to show why she should be an article - just being a painter and somebody's cousin and somebody else's student doesn't really seem too significant.

Hey!! What's up with the whole article on Zope? You removed not only the links to the solution providers, which indeed could be classified as advertising, but also all the passages about it's major technical features, and also a lot of links to the community resources. Hello. Regarding Bozo, sure, I'll try to add some info about the Brazilian version on the article. It's just a little difficult since I really don't remember much about that show. Pretty much nothing. But I'll try. I just need to do a small research, and then I'll add the info when I can. It looks like they had Bozo in Mexico as well, but I'm not sure yet. I'll see.

Pretty much all I could gather. It seems like this subject is somewhat hard to find about in the 'Net, so perhaps I'm mistaken on some parts there. In that case, feel free to correct whatever looks wrong there. I'd be glad. By the way, I also added some small section regarding Ronald McDonald, since Bozo played a major role on the creation of that clown. Anyway, go take a look at it and see what you think.

a question on your edit

Hi David. I noticed you removed my wikilink from pancake to Breece D'J Pancake and was curious as to why. I assume that you assumed the name was a joke which is quite understandable. It is an odd name, but feel free to google it or look up his book of stories on Amazon. I am new here, so I may not understand the system completely, but I thought that people looking for Mr. Pancake's entry might simply enter his last name and get the pancake article, and that people interested in pancakes may also be interested to hear about someone with Pancake for a last name. Nasty Messages

David,

I would just like you to know that I have responded to your nasty message in the Community Portal under disputes.

I may be ignorant of Wikipedia, but that does not mean that I do not have coutesy. I was under a tight schedule and wanted to get the articles on and was going to go back and wikify them later.

I have wikified many articles myself and copy edited many articles myself, and I have never sent one person a nasty email.

I do not appreciate your nasty message at all and am very offended by it, which is why I posted an email in the community portal.

You may be some really great journalst, but you have a lot to learn about common courtesy and treating people with respect.

For the most part, all I have seen of people in this group is they are really critical and bitchy.

A phrase that sets off alarm bells

From the deletion log: "deleted Brian Richmond: non-notable, incomprehensible".

Be careful. I have no doubt your judgment call was right, but a phrase like non-notable is something that should be reserved for VfD only, not as a reason for speedy deletion. It's contentious enough on VfD as it is; don't use it for speedying. Restrict yourself to reasons given in WP:CSD only. Otherwise you're setting yourself up for harassment by people who will cry abuse and happily go to WP:VfU to request undeletion for everything you speedy, and there's little you could hold against them. I don't know if something like this has happened before, but it wouldn't surprise me. As they say, prevention is better than a cure.
I'm one of those people who happens to think most of our admins are not devious megalomaniacs who systematically abuse their privileges, but heaven knows there's no shortage of people who think exactly that. Let's not give them ammo. JRM 19:14, 2005 Mar 30 (UTC)

Yes, I've found shifting work avenues does wonders for reducing one's Wikistress, especially if you do RC patrolling a lot. Copyediting FACs or checking whether a featured article is still in order is always a joy, and occasionally Special:Randompage gives you something really nice. Whatever you do, don't become an RC zombie. We have plenty of those.
Number one reason for snapping is thinking Wikipedia will collapse if you don't do your duty, and you're the only one who can do it. Relax. We are many, and we are inevitable. :-) JRM 19:27, 2005 Mar 30 (UTC)

I don't think anything you said was inflammatory; I think that the user in question is merely more sensitive to the phrasing of suggestions that the average Wikipedian. Paper Birch / White Birch

I used the Paper Birch link because that leads to the correct page (Paper Birch being the name used by the USDA); White Birch leads to the European species Betula pubescens, which isn't the NH state tree. If you think it should be called White Birch (or more accurately American White Birch) in NH-specific instances, then use a piped link [[Paper Birch|American White Birch]]. Fifth World Article

Just wanted to tell you someone arbitrarily took out the Fifth World nations paragraph in the article about the Fifth World, and any reference to the Fifth World Council, even though both are very real, and actually some members of the Council are registered or incorporated International Organizations, Intentional Communities, national Cooperatives and other Organizations.

If I revert the edits, all I'll get is the same. You are a journalist, and I would think that if an International Organization like the Fifth World Council is significant, resourceful, and intelligent enough to run its own public Top-Level Domain (pTLD), something North Korea is not capable enough to do, I don't believe we are talking about the usual micronation. Even still, is Atlantium, a micronation, more real than the Fifth World Council?

Thank you for taking the time to read this. I hope you will do something against this obvious bias, which is neither helpful to the Wikipedia, or those seeking the truth and objectivity within its web pages.

Podcasting page changes

The radio station podcast section you moved to a separate page last month seems to be creeping back, minus the U.S. stations. I tried summarizing and shortening, moving details to the list page yesterday, but most of my work was reverted... apparently because I wasn't able to log in as myself that day.

What do you think? Should the list be an "early adopters" history page, primarily listing radio stations that started podcasts before January 2005? One comment suggests it should simply be a list, but I have the impression that's not Wikipedia style. (Same reason the podcast list page was removed.) In any case I think a few more "firsts" belong on the main page. But I don't think I have much time for this...

speedy delete

Why did you delete List of largest suspension bridges/no link yet? It was created to serve as an external link dummy location for List of largest suspension bridges. The text is an error message. Go to List of largest suspension bridges and click on one of the numbered external references to see how it is used. I left a comment on the talk page explaining what it was. I'm guessing that you did not understand why I created it? What should I do to keep someone else from deleting it? I left a note to admins on the bottom of the page. There is a bonafide media source and is a valid addition to Wikipedia. The newspaper this article was published in is the 2nd largest English daily in Malaysia and serves 429,000 readers a month, google it and see. So now close to half a million people have been exposed to the term CartooNOVEL. I am simply documenting a historical fact.

This is regarding the following pair of sentences which I added to the article on Vegemite: "the product was known from 1928 to 1935 as "Parwill", in a convoluted play on words; advertising slogans suggested that "Marmite not like the taste, but I'm sure Parwill", utilising the British Commonwealth use of "Ma" and "Pa" as synonyms for "Mother" and "Father" (or, in American usage, "Mom" and "Pop")". Thanks, I work piecemeal, so i'll try to add things here and there towards getting a featured article somewhere, i've never had one before. Apologies on the accidental double entry, it came from clicking on that "leave a message" thing on the top. I had never used that before.

Also, are there any other journalist Wikipedians around this area? I honestly don't know if I count, I got a B.A in Journalism from Keene State last year, but I want to run for office up here in Merrimack, so that's made things tricky. Cool, I'll be in there next Tuesday or so, i've only written a few things so far, so i'm mostly just an "e-mail it in" guy, but I need to talk to Joe and Mike about checks. I've heard rumors that they or the Telegraph might have a full time job in a section other than news, which would be great, but all I can do now is hope and continue to plug away.

moving Route 101

In responding to your comments: First, I did cut and paste the text, but it was to a prexiting article. While I probably should have read more indepth about the proper method of moving articles, I thought merely redirectly the old article to the new one would suffice. If I only redirect the article does that still delete the talk page? Second, since I moved the article to the prexisting article, which had the New Hampshire state highways category (the one I redirected didn't). I changed the bold title in the article to reflect how other NH highways are listed. However, it seems redundant to have "New Hampshire State Route 101" when New Hampshire doesn't have any county road, thus there is no distinction that needs to be made. I would assume that since the actual name of Route 101 and the other state roads aren't listed or named officially or conventially using "state" (that I am aware of), all the titles within the articles could be changed to reflect such a change. Since you are an admin, being more knowlegable than me about such Wiki-related things, would you be okay with me changing all the roads in the category to reflect the change I am proposing? Fred LaRue and Dram Shop

I stumbled upon your work concerning Fred LaRue and was surprised that you bumped into me on the Dram Shop page. This suggest to me that the community of people who edit Wikipedia must be smaller than I thought.

I tend to have interests in the political, historical and legal subjects, all of which easily lend themselves to people with political agendas, myself included. For example, go read the article on global warming. There is a huge battle going on over there. The ease at which one can get annoyed with other editors, to flame and alienate others in this medium is a hazard.

Considering you are a journalist, I would think Wikipedia would be a bit of a busman's holiday for you. I must say, it is a bit addictive.

That's easy: I travelled back in time to leave that message after I blocked him in the future :P Hmm, seriously, I noticed a couple of times in the past few days that Wikipedia seems to have acquired some dificulty with handling dofferent time zones; the dtae stamps on my comments are regularly off by a couple of hours, even though my system time is correct and the correct time zone is set in my preferences. I also noticed that there's sometimes a difference of 2 hours between the time that is displaed for an edit on my watchlist and the user's signature...but anyway, it seems I blocked the vandal a couple of minutes before you, I decided on 24 hours, but 48 hours is absolutely fine with me. Speaking as somebody who read Li'l Abner but never saw Babylon 5, my first thought is that the latter was likely influenced by the former, which should be in the spoo article - what say you?

This was discussed in peer review a while ago and the result was to put it into the article; it is in the related articles section below the references. The reason there is not a more definitive connection is that there is zero evidence to support any connection in the first place, aside from the base similarities in name and color. J. Michael Straczynski, creator, executive producer, and writer of almost all of Babylon 5, and the creator of Spoo, has always been very open and direct about his influences. Since the late 80's, he has been interacting extensively with his fans and science fiction fandom in general, online, so much so that fans have archived over 17000 of his messages in searchable databases. Not once has he ever mentioned Scmoo, L'il Abner, or Al Capp, and the reference seems outside his previously acknowledged frame of reference in his works, which is usually ascribed to religions and mythology of all sorts, and classic science fiction and fantasy. Hyperlinks and bots

I think it might be a good idea for Wikipedia to have user specified hyperlink showup. i.e. only a subset of the total hyperlinks in a page showup. Some "modes" could be:

• All
• None
• Only the ones which are connected only from the present article
• Only the less connected articles ( these would be "relevant" ) to the article in question.
• Only the most connected articles - the "safest" and most visited and trusted articles.

Thresholds could be user defined or a test on graph theoretic metrics to determine feasible levels.

And .. I believe Wikipedia should have trolls for vandalism detection, and even for suggesting internal links, and (maybe) suggesting removal of wrong links ( as in nondisambiiguated links ).

After the inroads to the potential job opportunity at the Telegraph and the tour of the linetype machines, I figured I should give you a barnstar. Unfortunately, it was eaten by a bear(pictured to the right) who also apparently has eaten my career. Let's hope he decides to throw up soon, eh? Mike Cleveland said he'd get back to me on the job around Friday, but so far nothing. I've got to talk to him on Monday regardless on the West versus Concord game, so wish me luck there.
As for the Pheasant Lane Mall, I didn't see your note on the Nashua Talk Page, but it probably wouldn't have made a difference in my attempt to Be Bold, you know as well as anybody that notability and POV is a grey area, and my standards for notability on New Hampshire related articles is lower than most peoples' since this is where I grew up, it's part of who I am. I'm something of an Articles For Deletion regular on both sides of the fence, and i'm not afraid to fight for my articles.
Speaking of which, I should also inadvertantly thank you since it looks like i'll have to update my user page. Like you, I mark pages I created on there, but I have a separate section for pages I created that have been merged into something else, which fits Route 101 now. Hoax vs. Conspiracy

I do think the example image I am using also works for hoaxes as well as conspiracies because the author's name is "I. Killdm" which is meant to be slightly parodical.

I considered doing an image of a book titled "Proof Hitler was really a Jew" and some silly name but I thought people might not get the parody effect. I don't think the image you gave of the Cardiff Giant gives a clear example of something obviously a hoax or something that would make the point of one by looking at it. I don't think you quite 'get it' yet and it may be because I'm failing to make myself clear about the idea behind the concept for a picture to represent the term 'hoax'. If one looks at the Cardiff Giant photo it says nothing unless you have a caption to explain it. The image I put up,you got 'conspiracy' immediately - nothing more needed - so clearly it works well for conspiracy. What I want, if that image is inadequate for 'hoax' is something that, without requiring additional text, provides a simple, clean example which immediately speaks out 'hoax' or is close to doing so. Again, consider some image or photo that in and of itself is either obviously a fake or a fraud, is clearly known as one, or should be. You "reverted" the article List of songs about suicide, removing the listing for "Killing Time" by (HED) p.e. It is in fact a real song by a real group. See the lyrics here. The song and group's albums are available on Apple's iTunes. So, I'm not sure why you reverted and called the edit vandalism. It's basically about {{New Hampshire-stub}} redirecting to {{NewHampshire-stub}}, just in case if you spell it wrong or something, you don't have to worry about an edit preview or doing it all again for one little thing. I don't understand the problem with that, do you?

It's ok if it breaks some kind of "policy"(currently policies are made by whoever talks to the most people and whoever makes enough of a stink about things, apparently. I'm running for the arbcom to try and change that.), that's what WP:IAR is for. I don't know about you, but having that would be so useful when i'm stubbing several articles in a row while doing other things where I might forget what's in my clipboard.

Anyway, I hope things are well over there. I might quit everything else and try for a freelance 50/50 with Van Fleet and the Cabinet(Pat says the door's still open) very soon. From your comment on the vote on this stub redirect I think you may have mistaken what is being voted on there. {{New  Hampshire-stub}} is a redirect to the stub template {{NewHampshire-stub}}. Only the redirect is being considered for deletion, not the template. The redirect has been nominated because it contradicts the naming guidelines for stub templates. Thanks for deleting my enquiry RE: commercial advertising, and it is very interesting to note that you have confirmed my suspicions. The very broad idea of "corporations of note" certainly favours big record labels. Indeed, their heavy web-presence makes verifying the half-truths and wild, commercial exaggerations in their press releases as simple a task as turning to that other great corporation, Google.

I am not complaining that I lost the debate on GS's single advert page, in retrospect given that I am up against her e-team and her professional marketing people, how could I win?

I am asking for clarity that in fact Wiki is open to abuse from Public Relations teams. So far I see little evidence to the contrary.

One clear way to stem this abuse would be to outlaw individual pages for commercial products such as current singles. This information could quite easily be stored in their bio.
