I don't think that there is reason to believe that the de-linking of the Baht from the U.S. dollar “triggered a huge financial crises in East Asia”. This crises, which started in Thailand, was triggered by a number of factors, including week financial positions of some Thai (and other East Asian) banks, of which one collapsed partly due to a huge fraud.
