living people rules apply to fifer

[edit]

content, particularly controversial/harmful/potentially libelous content, about living people falls under the strictest application of sourcing and inclusion . Merely being arrested or charged is generally not sufficient. blogs are unsuitable sources as are tabloid newspapers. see WP:RS

if he has been convicted, that is a different matter. but if he was not, what would need to be shown for such content to be included is that well respected commentators when discussing fifer nearly always discuss the charges.

based upon my observations, there appear to be two different sets of people editing the article, one group attempting to smear him with all sorts of allegations that are implied to be true and one attempting to whitewash and create a saint like figure. neither is allowed. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 11:52, 12 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

regarding : [1]

in 2005, what is the reputation of Prensa - is it like The Guardian? or The Sun? is it the official mouthpiece of the government or some other political party point of view?

what is the relationship between Darío Fernández and Fifer? are they different parties? have they run against each other?

If my translation is correct, AND the newspaper is one that has a reputation for fact checking and accuracy and presenting content fully in a neutral point of view AND if Darío Fernández has no obvious bias against Fifer, the article should probably have something like this included "In 2005, after Fifer had left the Governor's office, he returned (X amount of money) to the Treasury during an investigation by the Comptroller for embezzlement (cite the newspaper)" followed by "The investigation by the Attorney General _____ whatever happened to the case ___(citation)"

the blog piece is not acceptable-- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 12:53, 12 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

La Prensa is a leading paper in Panama. [2] I see no reason why its articles cannot be treated as reliable. And, even unproven allegations of embezzlement are important when they concern an elected politician, especially one in a position such as Governor of a province. In this particular case, a warrant was issued for his arrest. This is an important part of his history, whether the accusations prove true or false. The arrest warrant would seem to be a matter of record.

As to the blog, yes it may be a blog, but it is very highly regarded and followed in the professional mining world; it very often breaks important news before major news outlets. It was recently, for example, quoted as a source during a BNN interview [3]. The link in the blog leads to a scanned document that is allegedly Fifer's drug conviction court document. I do not know what level of authenticity is required for its inclusion as a source, but it does appear legitimate, at least to me.

see WP:BLP particularly WP:WELLKNOWN "If you cannot find multiple reliable third-party sources documenting the allegation or incident, leave it out." and WP:BLPCRIME "A person accused of a crime is presumed innocent until proven guilty and convicted by a court of law. "
Self published sources such as blogs are NEVER suitable for defamatory content about a living person, and "it looks good to me" primary sources such as court documents are also not suitable, particularly when not hosted by the government site that issued them, see WP:V and WP:PSTS -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 18:27, 12 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
