Removing template but keeps line

Hello!

See Special:Diff/1064362152, I think DatBot should remove the line entirely when {{SVG upscale}} is both preceded and succeeded by \n.Jonteemil (talk) 13:28, 8 January 2022 (UTC)

Should be fixed. Dat GuyTalkContribs 18:23, 8 January 2022 (UTC)

Help me to resize image

File:Piasecki Aircraft logo.png is extremely large here, it is violate the policy for rationale use, can you help me reduce the image size? Thanks. -- Great Brightstar (talk) 17:08, 9 January 2022 (UTC)

@Great Brightstar: As you can read on the file page: this reduction will occur automatically: simply wait a while and a bot will resize the image file according to the guideline at WP:IMAGERES. (talk page stalker) Jonteemil (talk) 17:40, 9 January 2022 (UTC)
Thank you. -- Great Brightstar (talk) 06:45, 11 January 2022 (UTC)

Using DatBot to reduce filesize

Hello!

I found a user that has extracted a few SVGs using Inkscape with quite enormous file sizes. I therefore figured that DatBot would be able to reduce these if it could up- or downscale. On Commons there is c:COM:VFC to tag a bunch of files automatically but here there isn't so I would have to tag each file manually which takes a lot of time. Instead I used c:COM:Cat-a-lot which works here on enwiki too. The problem is however that Cat-a-lot only adds categories, not templates, therefore I added all files in Category:Wikipedia non-free SVG upscale requests but they all lack the template itself, so DatBot skips them. Do you think you can make it not skip them?Jonteemil (talk) 04:51, 2 January 2022 (UTC)

The template is quite important since that's what the bot replaces with {{Orphaned non-free revisions}} and verifies the image should actually be resized. You could use WP:AWB, set the source to whatever you used to cat-a-lot them, and tell AWB to add Non-free reduce at the top. Dat GuyTalkContribs 16:35, 5 January 2022 (UTC)
Okay, the files have now been correctly tagged and DatBot has done some great work reducing filesize with several MB on most files.Jonteemil (talk) 10:08, 6 January 2022 (UTC)
This has made me think though. Look at File:Andhra Bank logo.svg. From 20 MB to a mere 70 KB. I wonder how many more files like these there are. Maybe a bot should go through ALL SVGs on enwiki and try to reduce the filesizes. If at least 200 KB is reduced then the bot should reupload otherwise skip. What's your thought on this?Jonteemil (talk) 14:00, 6 January 2022 (UTC)
Disagree. Reducing the file size (mostly by removing whitespace) wouldn't change anything visual, which would spam users' watchlists and be a WP:COSMETICBOT. Dat GuyTalkContribs 20:17, 6 January 2022 (UTC)
Hmmm, I'm not sure if I would say it's just cosmetic, eventhough you are right that it visually does nothing. Would you be more comfortable if the threshold would be at 1 MB instead of 200 KB? @Redrose64: What are your thoughts on this?Jonteemil (talk) 22:07, 6 January 2022 (UTC)
What exactly was done to File:Andhra Bank logo.svg in order to reduce its size so dramatically? --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 14:20, 13 January 2022 (UTC)
It's mostly whitespace. Simplified, to help with readability, each element of the SVG is usually on a new line and indented compared to the previous one. However, SVG editing tools don't require the whitespace to parse the image, and the optimisation is easy to undo. Dat GuyTalkContribs 18:01, 13 January 2022 (UTC)
Hmmm, I'm pretty sure it's not whitespace, see my comment below.Jonteemil (talk) 18:03, 13 January 2022 (UTC)

@Redrose64: As far as I know, Inkscape works in a certain way. If you open an SVG or PDF in Inkscape and remove a few elements and save, then the filesize won't change - the removed elements will still be visible in the code but not shown when rendering. To actually delete any element from the SVG code you have to open up a seperate SVG file in Inkscape and copy and paste the elements you want to have in that file. This leads to some SVG files having extreme filesizes since this copy and paste into a seperate document haven't been done. For example PDF:s can have images, text and a bunch of other stuff that still will be visible in the SVG code unless removed properly. DatBot removes all this unnecessary already deleted elements that for some reason Inkscape has kept in the code.Jonteemil (talk) 14:42, 13 January 2022 (UTC)

SVG resizer paused?

Hello!

Only two SVGs have been processed since 19/1. Has DatBot been paused on SVGs?Jonteemil (talk) 21:13, 25 January 2022 (UTC)

File:CamberwellHigh.svg had syntax issues. Fixed now. Dat GuyTalkContribs 13:07, 29 January 2022 (UTC)
Okay, perfect. Just FYI see Special:Diff/1068625028, it breaks the heading.Jonteemil (talk) 16:03, 29 January 2022 (UTC)
