5000 edits and one goes oddly

See User_talk:Ronhjones#File:Google_Video_Player_window.png - as far as I can see all is OK, but the api call obviously failed. Can the api call to revdel the file be done to give a result? If so then we could skip the template removal. Ronhjones  (Talk) 01:01, 18 July 2017 (UTC)

On the other hand, if it only affects one in every five thousand files, then it could maybe just be ignored. My bot just retags the file again, so it'll just delay the deletion by a week. --Stefan2 (talk) 20:21, 18 July 2017 (UTC)
@Ronhjones: Not sure what you mean. Do you mean to check if the API result says the request failed to redo it? That might cause it to just be stuck in a never ending loop in case the API stops working (as happened during the server migration tests in which editing was disabled). Dat GuyTalkContribs 18:31, 19 July 2017 (UTC)
I was thinking about skipping it until the next day (not loop until it works!). but as User:Stefan2 - it is only an odd one, maybe we leave it alone for now and monitor the fails. Ronhjones  (Talk) 18:54, 19 July 2017 (UTC)

Hi there, I'm pleased to inform you that I've begun reviewing the article Belize at the 2016 Summer Olympics you nominated for GA-status according to the criteria. This process may take up to 7 days. Feel free to contact me with any questions or comments you might have during this period. Message delivered by Legobot, on behalf of TonyBallioni -- TonyBallioni (talk) 21:01, 24 July 2017 (UTC)

TonyBallioni I've been away for a while and not had access to a computer. Could you not fail the GA but give me another week or so to fix the issues? Thanks, 19:44, 29 July 2017 (UTC)
Placed on hold. No problem. Ping me when you've addressed them. TonyBallioni (talk) 18:04, 30 July 2017 (UTC)

Odd behaviour by DatBot - size is 471 × 415 = 195465 pixels and DatBot says "Removing {{Non-free reduce}} since file is already adequately reduced"! Ronhjones  (Talk) 22:19, 26 July 2017 (UTC)

There's also File:The Essential Mondo Rock.jpg where the bot reduced the file and then removed {{nfr}} one day later without tagging the file for old non-free revisions. Sure, my bot catches those files, but it looks a bit strange. --Stefan2 (talk) 18:43, 27 July 2017 (UTC)

The article Belize at the 2016 Summer Olympics you nominated as a good article has been placed on hold . The article is close to meeting the good article criteria, but there are some minor changes or clarifications needing to be addressed. If these are fixed within 7 days, the article will pass; otherwise it may fail. See Talk:Belize at the 2016 Summer Olympics for things which need to be addressed. Your "compromised account" block

Hi DatGuy, thought I'd summarise here for interested parties about your recent block. Credible information suggested that your email account was recently compromised, which prompted me to place a block on this account as a preventative measure. It turns out that you have followed our account security best practices, which meant that your account remained secure during this incident. My block was entirely an over-reaction, so apologies for adding a line to your block log -- There'sNoTime (to explain) 21:45, 1 August 2017 (UTC)

Hi DatGuy/Archives/2017. Because it involves New Page and AfC reviewers along with other maintenance workers (SPI, COIN), an informal chat has begun on some aspects of paid editing. See Conflict of Interest - of a different kind. Please add your thoughts there. It is not a debate or RfC.

New Page Reviewer Newsletter

Hello DatGuy/Archives/2017, thank you for your efforts reviewing new pages!

Backlog update:

  • The new page backlog is currently at 16,991 pages. We have worked hard to decrease from over 22,000, but more hard work is needed! Please consider reviewing even just a few pages a a day.

Technology update:

  • Rentier has created a NPP browser in WMF Labs that allows you to search new unreviewed pages using keywords and categories.

General project update:

  • The Wikimedia Foundation Community Tech team is working with the community to implement the autoconfirmed article creation trial. The trial is currently set to start on 7 September 2017, pending final approval of the technical features.
  • Please remember to focus on the quality of review: correct tagging of articles and not tagbombing are important. Searching for potential copyright violations is also important, and it can be aided by Earwig's Copyvio Detector, which can be added to your toolbar for ease of use with this user script.
  • To keep up with the latest conversation on New Pages Patrol or to ask questions, you can go to Wikipedia talk:New pages patrol/Reviewers and add it to your watchlist.

Your draft article, Draft:Playing History

Hello, DatGuy. It has been over six months since you last edited the Articles for Creation submission or Draft page you started, "Playing History".

In accordance with our policy that Wikipedia is not for the indefinite hosting of material deemed unsuitable for the encyclopedia mainspace, the draft has been nominated for deletion. If you plan on working on it further, or editing it to address the issues raised if it was declined, simply edit the submission and remove the {{db-afc}} or {{db-g13}} code.

If your submission has already been deleted by the time you get there, and you wish to retrieve it, you can request its undeletion by following the instructions at this link. An administrator will, in most cases, restore the submission so you can continue to work on it.

Thanks for your submission to Wikipedia, and happy editing. Legacypac (talk) 18:40, 25 August 2017 (UTC)

ANI regarding DatBot

(centralise discussion in section '#DatBot 6')

Information icon There is currently a discussion at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents regarding an issue with which you may have been involved. The thread is DatBot not resizing Non-free images. jd22292 (Jalen D. Folf) (talk) 19:05, 26 August 2017 (UTC)

The discussion has closed as the bot is not causing any harm, but I would like to know what's going on with DatBot not resizing non-free images? I am aware that several users tried restarting the program in an attempt to get it going again, though there's still concern. jd22292 (Jalen D. Folf) (talk) 19:38, 26 August 2017 (UTC)
@Jd22292: I'm as keen as you to get this running again - There are 4421 files tagged for reduction. It was stopped after an issue, subsequently we found the issue was with a very bad file showing the wrong pixel size, and not the bot. I tried to re-start the bot (by putting "Run" in the User:DatBot/NonFreeImageResizer/Run page), but it failed to restart, sadly DatGuy is rather busy and has not edited since 18:05, 18 August 2017. I'm sure he will kick it into life once he returns. I've resorted to to re-starting User:Theo's_Little_Bot to do the resize - it started well and now it's slowed up (as it did in the past). Knowing that code, I would not be surprised if the problem there was due to the temp files (every image reduced leaves a copy of the reduced image behind in the bot directory) - eventually one runs out of server space, and getting in touch with User:Theopolisme is not easy - he does not edit much now. Late?

I ran into this report, but it turns out the editor had already been blocked twenty minutes before. Thanks, Drmies (talk) 17:39, 30 August 2017 (UTC)

@Drmies: Well, since the bot does not have the abusefilter-view-private right (I believe that's the correct one?) then it can't use the API to find information about the filter hits. That's why it has to use the database, which occasionally has lag spikes, which can be seen here. I might be able to get it to work if the RfC at WP:EFN is closed as a "yes". Dat GuyTalkContribs 17:27, 31 August 2017 (UTC)
@Ferret and Ks0stm: See above regarding your pings at AIV. On another note, phab:T175684 is being processed. Dat GuyTalkContribs 13:30, 12 September 2017 (UTC)
Would it help if your bot had edit filter manager? I mean, obviously it won't be editing any filters, but it would allow it to view private filters. Ks0stm (TCGE)  If you reply here, please ping me by using {{re|Ks0stm}} in your reply.  17:13, 12 September 2017 (UTC)
@Ks0stm: I thought that it wouldn't be granted since I don't have EFM (such as with adminbots). Hopefully EFH is more lenient. Dat GuyTalkContribs 14:15, 13 September 2017 (UTC)
DatGuy, just so that I know you're aware, it looks like all of your bot's reports are stale (sometimes hours after the editor was blocked or triggered an edit filter). Sro23 (talk) 01:17, 18 September 2017 (UTC)

How do I upload a cricket logo?

Hi DatGuy, I see you uploaded logos for Hampshire and Northants cricket teams and hope you can help me. I have redrawn a SVG logo for the Bloem City Blazers cricket team. I uploaded the SVG file here, but it was soon deleted: commons:File:Bloem_City_Blazers_logo.svg I guess my question is what is the ideal method to upload my SVG file I drew for this Wikipedia page: Bloem_City_Blazers. What are the requirements to upload logos for sports teams without infringing on copyright? Any advice would be appreciated as I want to upload more SVG files for other cricket teams. Pixelated downscaling by your bot

Seems as though we might want to fix the bot or something, as for some reason downscaled images produced by your bot tend to end up looking pixelated. Could you look into this? Blake Gripling (talk) 13:36, 3 September 2017 (UTC)

@Blakegripling ph: DatGuy is away, is there any particular image you have seen? I could try a PhotoShop reduction. Reducing any image will always lower the resolution, some images reduce better than others. DatBot was (out of action since 27th July), I believe, using Python Imaging Library (PIL) with the reduction type set to "antialias" - which should give the best reduction. When DatBot comes back it should be using the more updated Pillow module, but I'm using that manually and not noticed much difference. Ronhjones  (Talk) 21:27, 4 September 2017 (UTC)

New Page Reviewer Newsletter

Hello DatGuy/Archives/2017, thank you for your efforts reviewing new pages!

Backlog update:

  • The new page backlog is currently at 14304 pages. We have worked hard to decrease from over 22,000, but more hard work is needed! Please consider reviewing even just a few pages a day.
  • Currently there are 532 pages in the backlog that were created by non-autoconfirmed users before WP:ACTRIAL. The NPP project is undertaking a drive to clear these pages from the backlog before they hit the 90 day Google index point. Please consider reviewing a few today!

Technology update:

  • The Wikimedia Foundation is currently working on creating a new filter for page curation that will allow new page patrollers to filter by extended confirmed status. For more information see: T175225

General project update:

  • On 14 September 2017 the English Wikipedia began the autoconfirmed article creation trial. For a six month period, creation of articles in the mainspace of the English Wikipedia will be restricted to users with autoconfirmed status. New users who attempt article creation will now be redirected to a newly designed landing page.
  • Before clicking on a reference or external link while reviewing a page, please be careful that the site looks trustworthy. If you have a question about the safety of clicking on a link, it is better not to click on it.

Reporting stale IPs

DatBot does it too much these days. DatBot should not report the following IPs to WP:AIV:
1) the IP has an overall history of less than 1 hour (edits and/or filter attempts)
AND
2) last IP action occurred >3 h ago.
This is a basic definition of a "stale IP", but the numbers 1 h and 3 h are just my spontaneous estimate, they could be amended. Thanks. Materialscientist (talk) 04:59, 22 September 2017 (UTC)

DYK for São Tomé and Príncipe at the 2016 Summer Olympics

On 25 September 2017, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article São Tomé and Príncipe at the 2016 Summer Olympics, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that a canoeist bore the São Tomé and Príncipe flag at the opening ceremony of the 2016 Summer Olympics, but at the closing ceremony it was carried by an unnamed volunteer? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/São Tomé and Príncipe at the 2016 Summer Olympics. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, São Tomé and Príncipe at the 2016 Summer Olympics), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.
