meteorite image

[edit]

Hi Dante! I'm wondering about the caption on Image:Nickel-Iron-Meteorite-Slice.jpg on the commons and at Meteorite. It claims that it shows Widmanstatten structure, but I can't see it at all. A Widmanstatten pattern should look something like that at this link. Have a good day! Deuar 11:12, 1 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The plaque may well have been wrong, it's not unusual :-) Another possibility that just came to my mind is that the sample has rusted (hence the funny colour!), and that's why you can't see the pattern any more. Deuar 12:10, 2 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Questionable anon editor

[edit]

I'm not sure what should be done about somebody who edits from 203.109.157.88 The Albert Schweitzer article has been subjected to allegations of racist behavior on Schweitzer's part, allegations that are uncited and, as far as I know, totally unjustified. The article has been reverted several times already. Checking the "contributions" I see the same pattern in regard to other articles. Probably the person needs to be watched. P0M 22:01, 1 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, no special reason I asked you. I started looking around for appropriate things to do, found a suggestion to contact an admin, a lists of admins, and noticed a familiar name. I wouldn't have bothered anybody, but this particular individual seems to have a real animosity on some subjects, seems not to be someone with whom I might have a productive discussion. So I thought that if I got the information to you it would at least get forwarded to the right place. I will in any event keep an eye on Schweitzer, one of my favorite people, and continue to revert. But this guy gets around to at least one other article too. Thanks. P0M 08:28, 2 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Topaz

[edit]

I removed the Mystic Topaz material because it seemed like advertising. I replaced it with a more generic description of the manufacturing process they use. Maybe it might be better to add it in the "external links"? Anyway, if you think my decision was made in error, by all means go ahead and revert it. flowersofnight (talk) 00:28, 5 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Rename skeet

[edit]

The as-is page refers to a slang term, which has caused a few links to point to the wrong article. Can you rename the pair of these so the slang term doesn't get the default definition? RPellessier | Talk 09:48, 13 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

World Citizen userbox, {{User:1ne/Userboxes/User world}}

[edit]

Hi, I noticed the message saying you're a World Citizen, I would like to invite you to add {{User:1ne/Userboxes/User world}} to your user page if you wish to proclaim it in a more effective way, and this template will also add you automatically to the Wikipedians with World Citizenship category. :) --Mistress Selina Kyle 23:54, 17 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I recently filed an AC case appealing the decision against me a year ago. In so doing I cited statements you made concerning my edits, particularly in our case you mediated long ago, in my defense. While I am confident I did not misrepresent you and did not imply you agreed with all my actions or anything like that, if you are concerned you should take a look and comment/correct if need be. Proposal pending at 9/11 conspiracy theories

[edit]

I have officially proposed to split the 9/11 conspiracy theories article, with the two most in depth areas being moved to separate articles at Allegations of Jewish or Israeli complicity in 9/11 and Allegations of U.S. government complicity in 9/11. I feel this will help alleviate the problem of the main article being too large and allow these two distinct concepts to be discussed in depth separately. Further division may be in order in the future, but I feel this is an important first step. Please check out the discussion at Talk:9/11_conspiracy_theories#Proposal_to_split_this_article. Thank you. Requested articles

[edit]

Oh. My. God. What the hell did I do.. The only thing that I wanted to do, was adding Bløf to the list. I take it that I accidentally edited an older version of the article, which made it seem like I removed a lot of entries. I'm really sorry for the mess that I have caught, but thanks for making me aware of this silly, silly mistake.SoothingR 06:30, 5 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Summary of mediation

[edit]

Thanks for your offer, but yes the evidence was all up (and available) a year ago, and anyway I'm not bothering with much more than the initial statement, because the AC's history suggests it all but ignores the case's sub- and talk-pages. As for my chances, perhaps you've noticed that many arbitrators now regard "expressing dissatisfaction" with being banned as grounds for further punishment [1] [2], so I wonder if I should have any faith in the process. Sigh. VeryVerily 12:03, 24 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

View from Spanish Bay

[edit]

Hello Dante, would you consider moving your image "Image:View-from-Spanish-Bay.jpg" to commons? I would love to use it as illustration for my article in the German Wikipedia about Links Courses (de:Links (Golf)). TIA, --81.91.160.27 16:22, 25 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Just moved it... I have no idea why it was just in EN anyway, I always upload my photos to Commons nowadays. Oops. :) Also, if you want a photo for links courses, you may want to look at Image:Spanish-Bay-First-Tee.jpg which isn't as picturesque, but shows the first tee. Furthermore, that "View" image has been cropped, removing some of the green. If you'd like, I can upload the uncropped version. --Dante Alighieri | Talk 18:52, 25 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I already discovered that image and used it in the article de:Golfplatz, where the anatomy of a Golfcourse is explained. I used it for illustrating what a teebox looks like. Thanks a lot for moving the other image, I've added it to my article. If you need any specific Golf pics, just ask, I might have something. -- ulim, 22:30, 25 January 2006 (UTC)

Can I get you to help me with a mediation I'm conducting at Talk:Neuro-linguistic programming? I stepped in with an outside view and was immediately personally attacked. Bagel cutters

[edit]

Originally the page said "Specialized devices have even been invented to allow for easy slicing of bagels without "squishing" them (a perceived "danger" when using a knife and hand, although most of these devices actually inflict more harm than hand-slicing)." I don't use a bagel cutter, but their purpose is to avoid the very common accident of slicing your hand or finger. It wasn't clear whether you were talking about the harm of imposed by the bagel slicer on fingers or the bagel. A mutual misunderstanding. And the slicer pictured looks like a very poor design.

hello dante. im sure you were trying to be helpful with your parenthetic edit; however, not everyone calls it "Carmel" as you assert. Among others: the official name, the name used in history, the name required to be used by the city council, and the name used in much of the technical literature are all Carmel-by-the-Sea. you may also note that i have used Carmel elsewhere in the article in deference to the casual tourist. i feel strongly that your comment does not belong in the opening sentence. i have studied Carmel-by-the-Sea as an academic for forty years, have attended dozens of city council meetings and planning commission meetings, and feel i have a sense as to the appropriate lead sentence. i think its important to avoid wordiness in any intro, and in this case to use language that would not offend the townspeople and city council and to keep a sense of history in tact. besides, i think we should give more credit to the wikipedia readers as to the clarity of the article without your paren edit. i would be happy to discuss this matter further with you on my talk page or the talk page of Carmel-by-the-Sea. beyond all this i have a number of acquaintances, who are not steeped in the local culture, that, unprompted by me, call it Carmel-by-the-Sea ...best regards Anlace 01:20, 23 February 2006 (UTC) (moved from my user page, where I just now noticed it --Dante Alighieri | Talk 19:03, 3 March 2006 (UTC))[reply]

Fair point - thanks for the suggestion, I'll try to do that in future. I guess I assumed that people would wait a few minutes before reverting a cleanup tag on the basis of WP:AGF (adding a cleanup tag is an unlikely thing for a vandal to do...) and the fact that it takes a little time to write a sentence or two. The rules you throw around without following yourself

[edit]

Wikipedia is not a battleground Every user is expected to interact with others civilly, calmly, and in a spirit of cooperation. Do not insult, harass or intimidate those with whom you have a disagreement. Rather, approach the matter in an intelligent manner, and engage in polite discussion. If a user acts uncivilly, uncalmly, uncooperatively, insultingly, harassingly or intimidatingly towards you, this does not give you an excuse to do the same unto them ("he started it!"). Either respond solely to the factual points brought forward and ignore its objectionable flavouring, or ignore the relevant message entirely. When a conflict continues to bother you or others, adhere to the procedures of dispute resolution.

Also, do not create or modify articles just to prove a point. Do not use Wikipedia to make legal or other threats against Wikipedia, Wikipedians, or the Wikimedia Foundation: other means already exist to communicate legal problems 2. Threats are not tolerated and may result in a ban.

Antelope Canyon

[edit]

Hi. On wp:fpc, you wrote, "Not worthy as an Antelope Canyon FP..." in reference to my photo. Just curious, have you been to Lower Antelope Canyon? I'm not asking to stir up trouble... I'd just like to know as a data point. The only negative feedback I've gotten on that image on photography discussion forums has been from people who had never been there. Anybody who has tried to get a 'representative' picture in Lower Antelope comes to the realization that there is no 'representative' picture possible. It's like walking around inside an office building, trying to take a picture that is representative of the building as a whole. From the outside, Lower antelope appears to be nothing more than a narrow gap in the ground. From the inside, it's a long series of tunnel-like passageways, with an occasional "room" that widens out of the tunnels. Its character is quite a bit different than Upper Antelope Canyon, which is what most people think of when they hear "Antelope Canyon." -- moondigger 15:44, 9 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Semi-protection of 2006 FIFA World Cup

[edit]

Since you are currently the last one to semi-protect 2006 FIFA World Cup – just to let you know, this topic has been discussed numerous times here, here, here, and here.

And as per WP:PPOL#Uses:

When a page like this one is particularly high profile, either because it is linked off the main page, or because it has recently received a prominent link from offsite, it will often become a target for vandalism. It is not appropriate to protect pages in this case. Instead, consider adding them to your watchlist, and reverting vandalism yourself.

Therefore, do not be surprised if the protection is lifted in a few hours, either by me or some other admin. Thanks. Zzyzx11 (Talk) 04:41, 28 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello,

I'm very sorry. If you want to know the reason why I sent for you to look at the article, it was because you were part of one of Wikipedia's editorial teams and because... I know it sounds stupid... but because your name sounded Italian, even though I had my suspicions you were referring to Dante the philosopher. I thought that maybe you would be interested in helping edit the page for that reason as Libya is a former colony as well as friend of Italy. For all I know, you could be South African, Argentinian or Vietnamese!

As for wiping your comments from my talk page, it was because, yes, I did send the message to a few other people. FEW not tens of people. I felt if somebody was interested in editing the Libya page and saw that I asked others, they wouldn't attack it with the same urgency.

All of these acts are VERY out of my character. My only reason is, we all get a little crazy when we're so desperate for an article to become featured. Please don't be offended, you have every right to be angry,

My apologies again,

Regards,
