Introduction to contentious topics

[edit]

You have recently edited a page related to the Arab–Israeli conflict, a topic designated as contentious. This is a brief introduction to contentious topics and does not imply that there are any issues with your editing.

A special set of rules applies to certain topic areas, which are referred to as contentious topics. These are specially designated topics that tend to attract more persistent disruptive editing than the rest of the project and have been designated as contentious topics by the Arbitration Committee. When editing a contentious topic, Wikipedia’s norms and policies are more strictly enforced, and Wikipedia administrators have special powers in order to reduce disruption to the project.

Within contentious topics, editors should edit carefully and constructively, refrain from disrupting the encyclopedia, and:

  • adhere to the purposes of Wikipedia;
  • comply with all applicable policies and guidelines;
  • follow editorial and behavioural best practice;
  • comply with any page restrictions in force within the area of conflict; and
  • refrain from gaming the system.

Additionally, you must be logged-in, have 500 edits and an account age of 30 days, and are not allowed to make more than 1 revert within 24 hours on a page within this topic.

Editors are advised to err on the side of caution if unsure whether making a particular edit is consistent with these expectations. If you have any questions about contentious topics procedures you may ask them at the arbitration clerks' noticeboard or you may learn more about this contentious topic here. You may also choose to note which contentious topics you know about by using the {{Ctopics/aware}} template.

Welcome!

[edit]

Hi Danielmeshel! I noticed your contributions and wanted to welcome you to the Wikipedia community. I hope you like it here and decide to stay.

I've noticed that you've expressed an interest in the Arab–Israeli conflict. Unfortunately, due to a history of conflict and disruptive editing it has been designated a contentious topic and is subject to some strict rules.

The rule that affects you most as a new or IP editor is the prohibition on making any edit related to the Arab–Israel conflict unless you are logged into an account and that account is at least 30 days old and has made at least 500 edits.

This prohibition is broadly construed, so it includes edits such as adding the reaction of a public figure concerning the conflict to their article or noting the position of a company or organization as it relates to the conflict.

The exception to this rule is that you may request a specific change to an article on the talk page of that article or at this page. Please ensure that your requested edit complies with our neutral point of view and reliable sourcing policies, and if the edit is about a living person our policies on biographies of living people as well.

Any edits you make contrary to these rules are likely to be reverted, and repeated violations can lead to you being blocked from editing.

Happy editing! Selfstudier (talk) 22:23, 8 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Selfstudier why are you deleting my talk comments which are factual and reliably sourced and/or contributing to discourse on the lack of clarity or appearance of bias on the Arab-Israeli conflict? I'm happy to converse on why my recommended edits are valid, as well as the sources. Unless you can articulate a valid reason, I am going to request a dispute resolution. DanielMesh (talk) 13:56, 10 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Per the above notices and WP:ARBECR, your edits in the topic area are confined to edit requests only. Selfstudier (talk) 14:02, 10 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Selfstudier Were they not edit requests in the talk areas of the articles? DanielMesh (talk) 15:29, 10 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Selfstudier "The exception to this rule is that you may request a specific change to an article on the talk page of that article or at this page." Does this not apply to my edit requests or recommendations for edits? DanielMesh (talk) 15:32, 10 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
As explained in WP:ARBECR, you need to follow WP:EDITXY format (essentially, change X to Y and provide sources as appropriate and any request should be straightforward). Selfstudier (talk) 15:35, 10 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Selfstudier See my comment you deleted below that recommended removing the quote being discussed entirely that you deleted:
Private Palestinian Arabs did not own 95% of the territory of Mandatory Palestine, see: Government of Palestine, Survey of Palestine, 1946, British Government Printer, Section 5. "Public Lands of Palestine. 257" at https://www.palestineremembered.com/Articles/A-Survey-of-Palestine/Story6696.html and also Acquisition of Land in Palestine, United Nations, New York, 1980 at https://www.un.org/unispal/document/auto-insert-208638/. There is no basis in fact to support the claim that 95% of all the lands of Mandatory Palestine were owned by private Palestinian Arabs or Arab farmers. Recommend removing this quote altogether as it is not accurate. DanielMesh (talk) 17:54, 5 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Selfstudier You also deleted my comment regarding the use of a misleading figure and bias source. My recommendation was assumed: delete or modify the figure or source.
Following this section, the figure entitled "Land Ownership of Palestine (in square kilometres) on 1 April 1943" further misleads the reader by stating 24,670.46 km2 of land consisted of "Arab / non-Jewish Ownership". This is a misleading category as Arab ownership is combined with public ownership. Likewise, the source for this article is http://www.palestineremembered.com/Acre/Articles/Story1000.html, a non-neutral, credible, or academic source. DanielMesh (talk) 20:13, 5 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You are missing the point, you are not permitted to engage in discussions at all, you may only file uncontroversial edit requests as I have outlined. ie Open a new section on a talk page titled edit request or similar (or use the template), specify X change to Y + source and some one will deal with the request (or I might if I notice it). Selfstudier (talk) 17:16, 10 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Selfstudier I’m not missing the point. The edits I recommended are not controversial and are a neutral point of view. I even provided neutral sources. You, on the other hand, did not. You appear to be heavily invested in the Arab-Israeli conflict and asserting bias—to what end, I don’t know, but you’re not living up to Wikipedia guidelines and standards. You even cited “palestineremembered”, a wholly biased source, to defend your edits—it’s even cited. What are you doing? DanielMesh (talk) 00:01, 11 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
This conversation is concluded. Please remember to comply with WP:ARBECR. Selfstudier (talk) 02:47, 11 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Selfstudier No, the conversation is not concluded. As I said earlier, I will be requesting a dispute resolution as well as submitting other concerns regarding your behavior on the Arab-Israeli conflict and associated pages. DanielMesh (talk) 13:09, 11 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
