European History Question
[edit]Hello Mr. Koehl,
I am interested in European History and saw your name under the "Interested in European History" page. I had a couple of questions that I would like to ask specifically about the Elizabethan Era, and was hoping we would be able to have somewhat of a conversation. I was also wondering if you knew anyone who specialized in this field, as I am hoping to write a research paper on it. My main question is: How did Queen Elizabeth create a sense of national identity in England? I have been researching this topic and was hoping you would be able to provide some insight.
Thanks, -Andrew — Preceding unsigned comment added by Andrew Spana (talk • contribs) 18:20, 2 January 2018 (UTC)
- Not being an expert in British 17th century, but the fact that she was the Monarch during a long time may be one reason in itself. Also the issue with the Spaniards turned out well. But are you saying the national identity increased significantly during her time ? Many authors sets this "nationality awareness" to the 1848 Revolutions (and also the 1830 one). Hope this was worth something. Boeing720 (talk) 06:09, 31 January 2018 (UTC)
New message without header
[edit]Message from you - "Hello, I'm Dan Koehl. I wanted to let you know that one or more of your recent contributions to American Recordings (record label) have been undone because they did not appear constructive. If you would like to experiment, please use the sandbox. If you think a mistake was made, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Dan Koehl (talk) 14:49, 3 January 2018 (UTC)"
reply...
Hello Dan, my recent contributions to the American Recordings (record label) were indeed constructive. The information under "New Artist" and "NEarly Life" in the article appear to be erroneously added SPAM, without any citations, and wholly unrelated to the American Recordings Record Label.
The first line of the "New Artist" section reads - "Robert Quintanillo Olivores has been signed to Warner Music Group ..."
This is added without citation firstly, and secondly Warner Music Group is a competitor of American Recordings' parent company, Universal Music Group. This information is probably better suited for Robert's personal Wikipedia page, which there is none(probably on account of all of the spamming with no citations).
Thank you for taking the time to read my message. Going forward I will once again delete this information from the article, but I will add a description into my edit. Do you have any other tips for going about editing pages and not getting caught in the STiki tool? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 96.85.109.113 (talk) 16:30, 3 January 2018 (UTC)

Tarana Burke BLP edit
[edit]Just so you're aware: your reverting of 2600:1:f612:4b10:49fe:d5d6:da1c:6d50 (talk · contribs · WHOIS) at Tarana Burke re-inserted possibly-defamatory synthesis statements implying that Burke is making false statements. I've neutered some of it, but most of what you re-inserted is probably still improper synthesis based on isolated examples that none of the cited sources seem to claim to be a pattern. --Closeapple (talk) 01:47, 4 January 2018 (UTC)

[edit]Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Style Louis XIV, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Leduc (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). To delete Hans Mueller's 40 years of service to Sabrett, where his nickname was "Horse" for his work ethic, and leadership, is shameful. Shane Balkowitsch page edits
[edit]Hi Dan, I made some anonymous edits to the Shane Balkowitsch page which I think are valid, and I felt I'd offered a sound and verifiable explanation. Rather than simply re-do them, though, I thought it wiser to message you. My edit was the result of a fact check:
- the claims I deleted are all supported, when you unwind it, purely by statements made by Shane Balkowitsch to the press.
- the end result (a portrait in the National Portrait Gallery) is checkable by searching the institution's web site, and comes up in the negative.
There are some ways Mr. Balkowitsch's claims could be true (perhaps the NPG is still considering including the work) but as it stands now these claims appear to fall in the unverifiable zone, by some reasonable standards. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Amolitor99 (talk • contribs) 15:17, 16 January 2018 (UTC)
- Fair enough @Amolitor99:, and thanks a lot for taking the time informing me, but would you mind follow the somewhat tiresome routine of discussing this on the talk page, just to get this properly overlooked, so other users may get insight in your thinking, and if nessecary, submit their opinion? Thanks, Dan Koehl (talk) 15:28, 16 January 2018 (UTC)
Absolutely. You know, I looked and looked for the Talk tab last night, but either it moved to the left (some time in the last decade) or I am old because I completely failed to see it and wondered "why isn't there a talk tab any more?" but I see it now. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Amolitor99 (talk • contribs) 15:30, 16 January 2018 (UTC)

Congregation of the Holy Spirit
[edit]Dear Dan Koehl,
I am new to Wikipedia and currently trying to make some useful changes to two pages : Congregation of the Holy Spirit and Holy Ghost Fathers. I am having some difficulties since what i want to change is the title of the article. In fact, the congregation (of which i belong) has often be called "Holy ghost fathers", but the officially recognized name is "Congregation of the Holy Spirit". We would like to change the page of the congregation to "Congregation of the Holy Spirit" instead of the other which is not accurate any more. But everytime i try to change something, i got automatic cancellation... please help me in that matter. Thanks a lot Salipunan (talk) 13:38, 8 February 2018 (UTC)
- Dear @Salipunan:, I guess the easiest thing to do is a redirect, hwever, it seems this should first undergo discussions, in order to see to that such a redrect would be supported by consensus, and not only by you. My advice is therefore to bring this matter to the talk page of the article you want to drasticaly change, and on that talk page argue for your opinion and give otheres the possibity of input. Dear AWB'er
[edit]I noticed over at the Portals WikiProject that you have or use AWB (or JWB).
There are some tasks that have turned up that are perfect for AWB.
We have many new portals, and they need:
- To have a {{Portal}} template placed in the See also section on the corresponding root article, outline article, and index article.
- A {{Portal}} template placed on the corresponding category page.
- A link placed at the end (in the "bottom" section) on the corresponding navigation template. For an example, see Template:Birds.
The new portals can be found on Category:Single-page portals along with some revamped ones. You'll need to use the skip feature of AWB.
If you have any questions, please {{ping}} me, and ask them below. — The Transhumanist 01:58, 30 August 2018 (UTC)

- Dear @Monkeycrabs:, regarding the article about Hugo Ferreira the various accusations seem to be backed up by valid sources, therefore confirmed. There is in that sense, not NPOV to try to "hide" verified information. There may be other ways though, to apply for some sort of protection for the subject of the article, which I am presently not aware of. but I will try to find further information, which may be relevant in this case. Dan Koehl (talk) 22:28, 3 September 2018 (UTC)
The article Jonas Nordin has been proposed for deletion because it appears to have no references. Under Wikipedia policy, this biography of a living person will be deleted after seven days unless it has at least one reference to a reliable source that directly supports material in the article.
If you created the article, please don't be offended. Instead, consider improving the article. For help on inserting references, see Referencing for beginners, or ask at the help desk. Once you have provided at least one reliable source, you may remove the {{prod blp/dated}} tag. Please do not remove the tag unless the article is sourced. If you cannot provide such a source within seven days, the article may be deleted, but you can request that it be undeleted when you are ready to add one. aNode (discuss) 14:44, 10 September 2018 (UTC)

updating information for the Islamic center of new england
[edit]Hello Friend!
I hope your day is going well! I just wanted to follow up on the edit update to the Islamic Center of New England page. My last submission updated the page for accuracy and to include the latest developments and programming, as much of the information on the page was out of date. I just want to make sure that our page is not only accurate, but also is objective- the previous information, particularly around the "controversy" portion is skewed and I'm worried about the repercussions for our community members. Thank you for your help :)
The updated submission for community access is as follows:
Community Access
ICNE is a staple for Muslims throughout the greater Boston Area, many Muslim families and activists from around the city have made a tremendous effort to expand programming within the masjid to better serve community needs. These include:
- Lectures and Workshops: weekly lectures on a wide range of topics spanning from voting rights to child development take place at the center. The aim of this programming is to keep the larger community informed and up to date on information that impacts their daily lives.
- Youth Programming: multiple programs are run out of the center for children ages 5-18- these include summer camps, weekend programming, athletics, and programming for teens. Major goals of programming include aiding in the holistic development of young Muslims. Program coordinators work to ensure that children and teens are learning both skills to ensure their physical, intellectual, and spiritual health as well as affording children the tools to succeed academically and socially in the current socio-political climate.
- Community Events: occur typically on a monthly basis with a goal of bringing families together. These events range from celebration of holidays to sports tournaments to game nights. These events allow for a strengthening of the local community and ensure that families are given a supportive foundation from which to flourish.
- Community Outreach: ICNE members also make an effort to provide outreach and support to the larger Quincy community. One notable event that occurs every year is a backpack giveaway, in which Muslim volunteers purchase backpacks and school supplies for local children and host a community event in which families from across the city can come and enjoy a day of fun at the center. Children who attend each leave with a backpack full of school supplies for the upcoming school year.
Masjid leaders The Islamic Center of New England is run by a Board of Directors, with elections occurring at the end of every term. The BOD oversees subcommittees, which consist of community members who meet weekly about topics related to community outreach, youth programming ,religious programming, etc. All members of both the BOD and subcommittees are volunteers and receive no monetary compensation. Religious programming is directed primarily by the Imams. The current imams of the two mosques are Imam Khalid Nasr (Quincy Location) and Imam Abdul Rahman Ahmad (Sharon location). — Preceding unsigned comment added by 136.167.230.148 (talk) 16:46, 12 September 2018 (UTC)

"Vandalism or Not?"
[edit]Hi, Dan Koehl,
General question for you in good faith and with due respect, but I am just wondering why when (a) someone (not you necessarily, but anyone) deletes another's reasonable, informative, constructive and referenced contributions to a Wiki entry it is not necessarily considered as potential "vandalism", but almost all efforts to (b) undo the deletions by the original editor are often considered suspect and potentially "vandalism".
Mysterious if (b) is deemed vexatious, why (a) gets an automatic free ride.
Or maybe (b) should not be questioned as "vandalism" but merely as a legitimate measure by someone who sincerely believes the deletion of their own prior contributions was unwarranted or at least misguided.
Seems like a murky and contradictory business that I am at pains to grasp, in terms of standards and practices I am just trying to understand.
Please expatiate when time allows.

Careless reverting
[edit]I see from your contributions that you're one of those editors who loves reverting. And like many such editors, you revert at such a prolific rate that you are bound to make mistakes. If a "citation needed" tag has been attached to some text since 2007, then that text should be removed. You clearly either did not even look at, or did nor properly understand, the edit I made and the clear edit summary I left. Be more careful. 51.6.138.84 (talk) 20:32, 13 September 2018 (UTC)
- Dear @51.6.138.84: without thousands of reverts every day, not much of editorial work would be left for people to read, so, unfortunately, this has to be taken care of, and sometimes at a fast rate, but I'm sorry if this is annoying you. But until alternative methods to protect the project from vandalism is developed, this will be the only method to repair the daily attacks of vandalism.
- I think above you are referring to when you removed large parts of text, from Summit register with the summarize para waiting 11 years for a citation and unencyclopaedic following para? Dan Koehl (talk) 21:58, 13 September 2018 (UTC)
- That, and I see that you also undid my edit to Cumans. You did both of these without bothering to explain why, apparently assuming they were vandalism when it was obvious they were not. That goes against policy and guidelines. Undoing vandalism is good, treating non-vandalism as vandalism is bad. There is no reason ever to do the latter. 51.6.138.84 (talk) 23:22, 13 September 2018 (UTC)
- Dear @51.6.138.84:, We obviously define vandalism and careless reverting differently, and after seeing how you, once again removed an entire section from an article when you undid my revert, but how your action once again was reverted by @Shellwood:, another Wikipedia Patroller, and how you started an edit war with the comment: are you trolling or just careless? , and finally, your edit was reverted by User:AnomieBOT, I would suggest that you edit articles differently, otherwise this may happen again. I do believe you have good intentions, but it seems your edits cause problems in the flow, and especially during the peak hours when Wikipedia is under attack, and users are reverting fast all vandalism, such edits as removing an entire section in an article will possibly result in similar actions from others user users and Bots. From my side, I have no opnion regarding the different versions in the two articles you mention, I simply try to protect the Wikipedia from Vandalism. With this, I believe this case is resolved. Dan Koehl (talk) 05:42, 14 September 2018 (UTC)
- I did not remove "an entire section". I removed an unencyclopaedic list, explaining why in the edit summary. Even if I had removed an entire section, that would make no difference. AnomieBOT did not revert my edit - it does not do that. It rescued references.
- My edit was obviously not vandalism, yet you treated it as such. It now seems clear that you do not have a clear grasp of what vandalism is, and yet you revert frantically. You are bound to be making many more mistakes than just this one. Stop undoing edits unless you are prepared to take the time to determine what each and every one actually is. 51.6.138.84 (talk) 07:19, 14 September 2018 (UTC)

- The Lokpal Bill and the Jan Lokpal Bill were 2 different draft legislations proposals. The article as it stands confuses ordinary readers. The usage of the official Seal of the Govt of India further confuses readers.103.30.141.57 (talk) 11:42, 14 September 2018 (UTC)

- | demographics1_info1 = <!-- Don't add Tulu. It is not Administrative language yet-->,
- indicating that there has been numerous biased edits by Wikipedia users, for some reason wants Tulu to be named as Administrative language, although it isnt yet. Please be patience regarding this issue, once the language gets official status, theres no problem to change the article. But as for now, further biased edits will be regarded as POV, edits will be reverted, and the users making an edit war will most probably become blocked. Hi, regarding the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International page edit, I thought that I did give a clear enough explanation in the comments for the removal of material. The material removed was discussed in the paragraph above. In particular, the SUAS competition is listed along with six other competitions (the number "six" was also a correction as the list was updated to include others not listed). The special paragraph concerning the SUAS competition was not only redundant, but it provided detail that was unbalanced with the rest of the article wherein the individual competitions are not broken out for detailed discussion. As with the International Aerial Robotics Competition, a special page has been established for detailed discussion. The same should be done for the SUAS competition as the current page under discussion is about the parent organization that sponsors the competitions, and is not focused on the details of those competitions. As such, I plan to revert your edit to reinstate my original edit because it improves the overall article and provides some corrections in the process. Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 73.82.182.75 (talk) 17:30, 15 September 2018 (UTC)
- I'm not going into a discussion regarding the topic of the article. Such a large removal looked like vandalism, but if I made a mistake, I'm sorry. Normally such a large removal, together with large parts of fact box etc, should forego by a discussion on the talk page. In either way, this is an issue for users involved in the article, if you didn't vandalize, then my greatest worries are over. Dan Koehl (talk) 18:20, 15 September 2018 (UTC)

AWB task request: please help with the backlog
[edit]Hey...
If you have AWB laying around, please dust it off and crank it up! ;)
We have a growing backlog!
There are now 545 portals. Of those, 52 are of the new design.
Many of the new portals are orphaned or near orphaned, and need links pointing to them:
- A portal link at the bottom of corresponding navigation footer template. E.g., Template:Machines for Portal:Machines. See examples of a portals link at the bottom of Template:Robotics and Template:Forestry.
- A {{Portal}} box in the See also section of the corresponding root article for each portal. If there is no See also section, create one and place the portal template in that. (Rather than placing them in an external links section -- they're not external links).
- A {{Portal}} template placed at the top of the category page corresponding to each portal.
To make a list of corresponding templates, you can use AWB's make list feature to make a list of the pages in Category:Single-page portals. Then you copy that list to a sandbox, and replace \nPortal:
with ]]\n* [[Template:
, using WP:wikEd. That will give you a list of templates to work on. Then you set skip in AWB to skip the ones that already have the portal link.
To make a list of corresponding root articles, make a list of portal links, and then remove "Portal:" from the links.
To make a list of category links to process, make sure you use a leading colon (:) in the category links, like this: [[:Category:Blue Öyster Cult]]
.
All new and revamped portals can be found at Category:Single-page portals.
Thank you. — The Transhumanist 20:44, 17 September 2018 (UTC)
Tornadoes of 2018 Edits
[edit]Hi, I know those edits look non-constructive, but I am simply removing the non-significant tornado events from the page and replacing them with more relevant and prudent information. I am I appreciate your concern, but these old articles need updating to be more consistent with the more recent tornado pages which only list significant events. I am sourcing my work, so please do not revert again. Thanks TornadoInfo (talk) 23:57, 19 September 2018 (UTC)TornadoInfo

Speedy deletion declined: Olga Fadeïeva
[edit]Hello Dan Koehl. I am just letting you know that I declined the speedy deletion of Olga Fadeïeva, a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: being part of a national team indicates significance. Also, 2004 FIVB World Grand Prix squads is a valid redirect target per WP:ATD. Thank you. SoWhy 09:24, 20 September 2018 (UTC)
"Kaam" Wikipedia Page
[edit]Hi Dan - first up, I am new to Wikipedia editing and apologies upfront for doing anything "out of turn". The existing page for "kaam", a Hindi word, correctly talks about it as being one of Sikhism sins but is misspelled - should be either "kam" or "kama" which is also the sanskrit meaning.
"kaam" actually means "work" in Hindi and I was trying to edit the same on the page. We can move the current contents of "kaam" to a new page called "kam" or "kama" but "kaam", to stay true to its definition, simply refer to a translation of "work" in hindi.
Please check out the following link to firm up the above claim and help me correct this reference: https://www.google.co.in/search?rlz=1C1CHBF_enIN805IN805&ei=D3OjW56qOI-v9QOv2JuICw&q=kaam+meaning+in+english&oq=kaam+meaning+in+&gs_l=psy-ab.3.0.0l7j0i22i30k1l2j0i22i10i30k1.197702.199586.0.200549.16.12.0.0.0.0.289.1706.0j5j3.8.0....0...1c.1.64.psy-ab..8.8.1703...0i10k1.0.0QVVDCv_VS8

But one thing for sure, Google is not a valid source. on your talk page, I have inserted some good links as to how to edit on Wikipedia, and how to use sources, and which, correctly, and I think after reading that, you will have better possibilities to change an article, that other regarded as correct, since it was created back in 2006. citation on article
[edit]hi Dan I am new on wikipedia and still need to familiarise myself with editing and contributing documents on this platform. I have not included a citation on my article. i am writing information based on oral history but there are some parts which i will include that have references, I guess in that case i will have to put proper citation processes. Hi there. Through some talk page stalking I noticed you marked 2018–19 California Baptist Lancers women's basketball team as patrolled. This creator of that article has created many other similar articles all of which are in need of major cleanup and nearly all of them also remain unsourced. While the topics are no doubt notable I wanted to give you a heads-up about the larger issues that remain around this editor's creations. Best, Barkeep49 (talk) 18:13, 23 September 2018 (UTC)

Globex Trading System
[edit]Hi Dan,
Thanks for your feedback on the article that I put out on Wikipedia, Globex Trading System. It looks like it's marked for deletion by somebody named Vellela who has really been a thorn in my side. Currently there is no article about the Globex Trading System out there and it deserves to have an article. There isn't much information out there that describes Globex but I did my best to abide by the rules. It looks like you're a more seasoned Wikipedia author so please feel free to make the improvements that are necessary, or tell me exactly what I need to do especially to get the article from not being deleted. Vellela has been honing in on my articles and rather than take the time to help here, he/she is being a nazi about it. A power trip I guess.

WPCleaner 2.0
[edit]Hello Dan Koehl.
I would like to inform you that a new version of WPCleaner is available replacing the old version (v1.43) dating back to almost a year. Unfortunately, going from version 1.43 to 2.0 automatically isn't possible and will require a new installation. It's necessary to install version 2.0 to take advantage of updates and bug fixes. Version 1.43 will have to be uninstalled manually, as there are no more updates for it.
The installation procedure is described at Wikipedia:WPCleaner/Installation.
Note: for usage in Bot mode, I strongly advise to check the modifications to be sure that the tasks run correctly

Elephant Nature Park
[edit]Hi Dan,
There is currently no criticism or concerns section in the Elephant Nature Park article. Did you and Jytdog not have any success finding links to balancing information?
Even if they are doing excellent work, perhaps there should be some mention of the Elephant Aid International Report from 2006.
It would be interesting to understand the Elephant Nature Park in the context of the elephant situation in Thailand generally and Thai elephant sanctuaries specifically, but I am certainly not an expert, and I haven't researched where to find citable information.
Thanks for your work,

NPR Newsletter No.16 15 December 2018
[edit]Hello Dan Koehl,
- Reviewer of the Year
This year's award for the Reviewer of the Year goes to Onel5969. Around on Wikipedia since 2011, their staggering number of 26,554 reviews over the past twelve months makes them, together with an additional total of 275,285 edits, one of Wikipedia's most prolific users.
- Thanks are also extended for their work to JTtheOG (15,059 reviews), Boleyn (12,760 reviews), Cwmhiraeth (9,001 reviews), Semmendinger (8,440 reviews), PRehse (8,092 reviews), Arthistorian1977 (5,306 reviews), Abishe (4,153 reviews), Barkeep49 (4,016 reviews), and Elmidae (3,615 reviews).
Cwmhiraeth, Semmendinger, Barkeep49, and Elmidae have been New Page Reviewers for less than a year — Barkeep49 for only seven months, while Boleyn, with an edit count of 250,000 since she joined Wikipedia in 2008, has been a bastion of New Page Patrol for many years.
See also the list of top 100 reviewers.
- Less good news, and an appeal for some help
The backlog is now approaching 5,000, and still rising. There are around 640 holders of the NPR flag, most of whom appear to be inactive. The 10% of the reviewers who do 90% of the work could do with some support especially as some of them are now taking a well deserved break.
- Really good news - NPR wins the Community Wishlist Survey 2019
At #1 position, the Community Wishlist poll closed on 3 December with a resounding success for NPP, reminding the WMF and the volunteer communities just how critical NPP is to maintaining a clean encyclopedia and the need for improved tools to do it. A big 'thank you' to everyone who supported the NPP proposals. See the results.
- Training video
Due to a number of changes having been made to the feed since this three-minute video was created, we have been asked by the WMF for feedback on the video with a view to getting it brought up to date to reflect the new features of the system. Please leave your comments here, particularly mentioning how helpful you find it for new reviewers.

WikiProject X Newsletter • Issue 13
[edit]This month: A general update.
The current status of the project is as follows:
- Progress of the project has been generally delayed since September due to development issues (more bitrot than expected, some of the code just being genuinely confusing, etc) and personal injury (I suffered a concussion in October and was out of commission for almost two months as a result).
- I currently expect to be putting out a proper call for CollaborationKit pilots in January/February, with estimated deployment in February/March if things don't go horribly wrong (they will, though, don't worry). As a part of that, I will properly update the page and send out announcement and reach out to all projects already signed up as pilots for WikiProject X in general, at which point those (still) interested can volunteer specifically to test the CollaborationKit extension.
- Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Pilots was originally created for the first WikiProject X prototype, and given this is where the project has since gone, it's only logical to continue to use it. While I haven't yet updated the page to properly reflect this:
- If you want to add your project to this page now, feel free. Just bear in mind that more information what to actually expect will be added later/included in the announcement, because by then I will have a much better idea myself.
- Until then, you can find me in my corner working on making the CollaborationKit code do what we want and not just what we told it, per the workboard.
Until next time,
-— Isarra ༆ 22:44, 20 December 2018 (UTC)
I would like to bring to your notice that you had protected the Mangalore article from vandalism during Sept-Oct 2018.
Even now, there are frequent insertions of Tulu administrative language and Tulunadu regions into the Mangalore article. This was the same reason, as to why it was earlier protected (Sept-Oct 2018).
I request you to give protection to the Mangalore article again ASAP.

Wikipedia:WikiProject Portals update #024, 26 Dec 2018
[edit]Last issue, I mentioned there would be a flood, and so, here it is...
Portals status
[edit]We now have 4,620 portals.
And the race to pass 5,000 by year's end is on...
Can we make it?
The New Year, and the 5,001st portal, await.
( New portals are created with {{subst:Basic portal start page}}
or
{{subst:bpsp}}
)
Evad is back!
[edit]After disappearing in mid-thread, Evad37 has returned from a longer than expected wikibreak.
Be sure to welcome him back.
Improved cropping is coming to Portal image banner
[edit]User:FR30799386 is working on making {{Portal image banner}} even better by enabling it to chop the top off an image as well as the bottom.
Many pictures aren't suitable for banners because they are too tall. Therefor, User:FR30799386 added cropping to this template, so that an editor could specify part of a picture to be used rather than the whole thing.
Upgrade of flagship portals is underway
[edit]Work has begun on upgrading Wikipedia's flagship portals (those listed at the top of the Main page).
So far, Portal:Geography, Portal:History, and Portal:Technology have been revamped. Of course, you are welcome to improve them further.
Work continues on the other five. Feel free to join in on the fun.
Spotting missing portals that are redirects
[edit]In place of many missing portals, there is a redirect that leads to "the next best topic", such as a parent topic.
Most of these were created before we had the tools to easily create portals (they used to take 6 hours or more to create, because it was all done manually). Rather than leave a portal link red, some editors thought it was best that those titles led somewhere.
The subjects that have sufficient coverage should have their own portals rather than a redirect to some other subject.
Unfortunately, being blue like all other live links, redirects are harder to spot than redlinks.
To spot redirects easily, you can make them all appear green.
What's new in portal space?
[edit]Keep 'em coming!
[edit]And I'll see you next issue.
Sincerely, — The Transhumanist 08:07, 26 December 2018 (UTC)
Wikipedia:WikiProject Portals update #025, 30 Dec 2018
[edit]We can now crop the tops of pics to make banners
[edit]Before, we could only cut off the bottom of pics.
User:FR30799386 has pulled it off, and made the upgrade to {{Portal image banner}}...
So, this:
Becomes this:
Here's the code for the above banner:
{{Portal image banner|File:American Falls from Canadian side in winter.jpg | [[Niagara falls]], from the Canadian side |maxheight=175px |overflow=Hidden|croptop=10}}
To see it employed in a portal, check out Portal:Niagara Falls.
About that end of the year goal...
[edit]We were racing against time to create 5,000 portals by the end of the year (just for the heck of it).
We made it. We've passed the 5,000 portals mark, with time to spare!
And the 5,000th portal is Portal:Major League Baseball, by Happypillsjr.
Congratulations!
What's next?
[edit]The 10,000th portal mark. But...
...there is plenty else to do in addition to building new portals:
- The new portals need to be linked to from the encyclopedia.
- On those portals about subjects that are not typically capitalized, the search parameters need to be refined/expanded, to maximize the chances of Did you know and In the news items being found and displayed.
- A Recognized content section needs to be added to each portal that has a corresponding WikiProject.
- Addition of a category on those portals that lack a subject category.
- Implement the portal category system, adding the appropriate categories to each portal.
- Upgrade, and complete (as per the tasks enumerated above), the old-style portals that are not regularly maintained, which have not been converted yet (about 1,100 of them).
- Find and fix the remaining bugs in the underlying lua modules.
- Build portal tools (scripts) to assist in the creation, development, and maintenance of portals.
- Build a script to help build navbox footer templates, via the harvesting of categories, amongst other methods.
- Update the portal building instructions.
- Update the portal guideline.
- Refine the programming of the portals to reduce their load time.
- Design and develop the next generation of portals and portal components.
And whatever else you can dream up.
But most of all, have a...
Dan Koehl, thank you for your contributions to the Portals Project, and have a prosperous, productive and enjoyable New Year.
Sincerely, — The Transhumanist 11:53, 30 December 2018 (UTC)
