Hello, welcome to Wikipedia. Unfortunately, your recent edit to Cuban American National Foundation was copied from the foundation's website at http://www.canf.org/ingles/about-CANF/nosotros.htm. Wikipedia has a firm policy about using copyrighted material from other locations. Wikipedia makes the assumption that all material from other sites is copyrighted unless someone who can prove that they are the copyright owner, or has permission from the copyright owner, proves otherwise. Please read the section at Wikipedia:Copyright problems headed "Copyright owners who submitted their own work to Wikipedia". And thank you for contributing. Corvus cornix 17:27, 10 July 2007 (UTC)
Response to help desk question
[edit]Even if you are the copyright owner of your website, you cannot copy the content word-for-word onto Wikipedia unless you release the copyright. I've never seen this done before. You would need to cite the website in the article, and make a statement on the "discussion" page to the effect that you are the copyright holder and are releasing the copyright. However, copying the content word-for-word violates another policy, WP:COI, which is a subset of WP:NPOV (see below). If there are inaccuracies in the article, you may remove them and add the correct facts in your own words, citing the website as a neutral editor. Again, please explain this on the discussion page.
Here is the standard warning to people who are closely involved with their subject. Consider it as helpful advice.
If you have a close connection to some of the people, places or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest. In keeping with Wikipedia's neutral point of view policy, edits where there is a conflict of interest, or where such a conflict might reasonably be inferred from the tone of the edit and the proximity of the editor to the subject, are strongly discouraged. If you have a conflict of interest, you should avoid or exercise great caution when:
- editing articles related to you, your organization, or its competitors, as well as projects and products they are involved with,
- participating in deletion discussions about articles related to your organization or its competitors,
- linking to the Wikipedia article or website of your organization in other articles (see Wikipedia:Spam);
- and you must always:
- avoid breaching relevant policies and guidelines, especially neutral point of view, verifiability, and autobiography.
For information on how to contribute to Wikipedia when you have conflict of interest, please see Wikipedia:Business' FAQ. For more details about what constitutes a conflict of interest, please see Wikipedia:Conflict of Interest. Thank you. Shalom Hello 19:03, 10 July 2007 (UTC)
