Sandsledding

Sorry! I hope I'm not being really annoying... I'm new to wikipedia... I'm not trying to start an edit war. I was able to find a source for the fact that sandsledding is an actual thing that is different from sandboarding. I also want to put this image into the article http://www.nps.gov/grsa/planyourvisit/images/web285sandsledding_girl2012.jpg but don't know how... Also I think it actually might need to be listed as sand sledding with two words but I dont know how to change it. Thanks for any help!

• Hello Ikamjh, I think you're better off at this point by editing the Sandboarding article and creating a section on Sledding. At some point, if the sledding section warrants it, it will be split off ("forked") into its own article, but only if it gets big enough and is notably different from 'boarding. The source you listed discusses both under the same topic, since the only difference is the board one rides upon, so we should probably do likewise.
• As for the photo, since it is from NPS, a government agency, and the photo is credited to an NPS employee, it is considered Public Domain, so you can upload it here. Go to WP:UPLOAD for how to do that. Then when it's uploaded, you call it in the article like this: [[File:whateveryounamedthefile.jpg|thumb|right]], to add it, thumbnail-size it, and put it on the right side of the page where single photos usually go. Good morning. You sent a message that my new page appeared to be advertising. I am still in the process of building it out, but rest assured, it is not advertising we are seeking. We are one of a group of higher education schools, and our other campuses have Wikipedia entries, so my administration asked me to create one for our school as well. It will simply be our history, founding, etc. There will be no content related to current enrollment, etc. Hopefully this will be acceptable.

• Hello Mrdullins and thanks for the reply and the explanation. The issue is that you've created this entry in your "userspace". Notice the title of the page is User:Mrdullins. That is a specific section of the wiki that all users get to use for things directly related to their on-wiki activities. Notice my page for example: User:Crow. Apart from a public-domain pic of a bird, the rest is things like articles I've created, pictures I've uploaded, etc. Regular articles (such as for your other campuses) are in what is called the "main space" or more appropriately, the "article space". There will be no prefix for the titles there. A good summary from the official policy is:

"Wikipedians have their own user pages, but they should be used primarily to present information relevant to working on the encyclopedia. Limited biographical information is allowed, but user pages should not function as personal webpages or be repositories for large amounts of material that is irrelevant to collaborating on Wikipedia."

• So what you have there now isn't really how it is supposed to be used. And more importantly right now (because of legal ramifications for Wikipedia), it is a copyright violation by having content directly copied from http://www.dallasinstitute.edu/. That will have to be cleared fairly quickly to avoid having your page deleted entirely. I understand you're new and so aren't aware of these nuances, but no harm done. The best thing would be to take 15 minutes and read THIS page on all the steps needed to create an article, including where to work on it until it is ready to "go live", how to collect and cite sources, and so on. OK, thanks for the info. From what I was reading, I thought that one of the options for creating a page was to build it first in my user space and then copy it over. I'll work to resolve that issue asap.

Also, it is the administration of the college (who owns the website you referenced) that requested the page be built in the first place. So how do we go about clearing the copyright issue you pointed out?

I'll check out your links as well, but any "short answers" you can provide would be most appreciated. My comfort zone is the classroom, not building online web pages. :)

• Hello again Mrdullins! (I link your name so it fires off that red flag up top, just so you know!) My apologies that I left out one preemptive answer to your question which is: Yes you can absolutely work on article drafts in your userspace. Its just preferred not to do so on the main page but rather a sub-page or sandbox page. Sandbox is easy: click the "sandbox" link up by your name to open that page and edit freely there. If you want to do a sub page (useful mainly if you have multiple articles in work), is to create a page called User:Mrdullins/WhateverNameYouWantHere. Again, sorry for leaving that not-quite-insignificant item out.
• Copyright. The tricky thing about copyright is that Wikipedia content is freely usable by anyone else for pretty much any purpose, so we need all content to be similarly free. The easiest way to stay compliant there is to just paraphrase the copyrighted source in your own words. Conversely, if the owners of the copyright want to also release their content under a free license, then we have no violation anymore. Note that they would have to release it under This License, which would let anyone anywhere use it for any purpose, even commercially, as long as they credit where they got it from originally. • User:Fevrret, Arbitration is not the right place for this. That's the last step in a long string of Dispute Resolution locations, and so a request will be declined as premature. The better venue for this is right where it is now. The admin that closes the discussion will review all comments, and should hopefully address the personal attack. If they don't, a note on that admin's talk page referencing it would be the first step. I would again reiterate to be careful when performing cleanup-type tasks though, as between the NAC and the moving of the other guy's comments, a raised eyebrow is understandable, though personal attacks of course are not. Admin Help: Odd pattern on NPP

{{adminhelp}} Hello admin! Not sure what to make of this, so I'm looking for feedback/advice. Over the last 2 days there's been an odd pattern popping up on New Page Patrol: A new account will pop up, add a 2-3 sentence blurb about Columbus GA to their talk page or user page, and make no further edits (1 exception follows). The blurbs don't come back as a copyright vio, and though they're a little promotional in tone, nothing really serious.

I cleared a few of the talk pages and replaced with a standard welcome message. One of the users reverted that and restored the Columbus blurb. It's slightly surreal! I don't know if this is a class project, a very low-level attempt at SEO for Columbus, or what. The pages in question are below (unlinked so as not to Ping):

SCV Daikin Europe

You asked a question about the handling of Draft:Daikin Europe. I think G12 is an option but I will tell you why I didn't go that direction in this instance. In many cases, new editors are unaware that they cannot simply copy material from elsewhere. If they do so and CSB tags it, in some cases they simply abandon it. If that were the case G12 might make sense. In this case the editor remove the tag. Using AGF I assume that the editor either believes that the tag is invalid or believes they have addressed the issue. I think it is worth trying to have a conversation about that so as you can see I left a note with the editor.

My hope is that they will respond that the material it compares closely to is in fact a copy of some properly licensed source or Wikipedia or something else. That happens. Next best, they didn't appreciate the need for rewrite, but will do so when explained. If they do not respond or do not have an adequate response then I would move to removal or rewrite if that's feasible.

I generally do not do the blank option. Especially in the case of a draft which is already noindexed. In my view the blank option is for an editor who identifies a potential copyright issue but doesn't wish to do with it themselves or at least doesn't wish to deal with it at this moment and wants the material blanked until it can be addressed. If I'm planning on staying on top of that I'm not particularly worried that it might be visible for a few days.--S Philbrick(Talk) 16:13, 21 September 2014 (UTC)

I'd like to make sure we are on the same page when it comes to SCV. I think I know what's happening but I don't want to be guilty of assuming and making a mistake. I see that you've been contributing quite a bit to SCV recently. That's extremely welcome; as you can see we don't have all that many people helping out.

I think you are assuming that because you are new, the best thing to do is review the item and add an explanation as text under the item. Then you expect that someone with more experience will come along and confirm your conclusion or correct it if you make in error. That's exactly the right sequence of events. In almost all cases your conclusions have been spot on. I think I found one instance early on when you missed something but when I pointed it out you realized it and have dealt with similar situations subsequently and gotten them right.

As you probably know chief copyright expert is moonriddengirl. If I have understood your approach to this task correctly and you are interested in continuing I'd like to ask her to take a look so we can decide when to transition from offering your opinion to simply handling them.--S Philbrick(Talk) 15:54, 21 September 2014 (UTC)

Yes I would like to help out with copyrights: I've done NPP and RC Patrol, and while that's needed it also really just adds to the backlogs you guys have, which I can't really help with. But yes you are correct: I thought I'd read that only Clerks and Admins should close investigations. Though that was on the main WP:CP page, which the SCV reports show up on, and where I first started checking them. Hi, MRG clarified something I did not know but makes sense. CP is a little different than SCV. I've worked at both, and agree. I've been at SCV more recently, because that's where I saw the biggest need. I hadn't realized that the position of clerk was solely for the CP area, so go ahead ans start closing the SCV items you work on. I do think it is helpful, in anything other than completely obvious closes, to include some rationale in the edit summary. You've been doing nice write ups, please continue, and either drop after the listing or in the edit summary. I usually do a one word summary if it is quite clear, but elaborate a bit when I think it is a closer call.--S Philbrick(Talk) 18:10, 21 September 2014 (UTC)

Hi! I just wanted to say what a great job you seem to be doing at WP:SCV, it's a pity there aren't ten of you. I've noticed some of the questions you've asked there, but haven't really felt qualified to try to answer them – I see that Sphilbrick has, though. As you've probably noticed, I've sometimes looked at what you've done, mostly agreed with it, and occasionally followed up on it a bit.

I'm not too sure what should be done about Matt Bish, listed in Wikipedia:Suspected copyright violations/2014-09-07 (I'd like to close that day up); you've done a lot of good cleaning up, but I feel that we still have a foundational copyvio that hasn't been fully removed. I may be completely wrong here, but I was wondering if you'd like either to ping Sphilbrick or MRG or someone for their view, or instead just go ahead and list it at WP:CP where others will surely see it, and where there's a good chance it'll get completely rewritten? Re Matt Bish, I'd say that right now a good 90% of the duplicate detector's hits are long school names (The school of audio engineering and film, the school of architecture at makerere university, and so on), and the names of sources in the references section. I can take another pass at it to prune out some of the remaining DD hits ("father's JVC video deck" to "father's VCR", etc). I'll retract my closing of that and ping for opinions though. Deletions of My Edits

Hi. I have been editing the Drinker, Biddle & Reath Wikipedia entry over the past two years by inserting three court decisions of national importance in which Drinker Biddle & Reath's Insurance Department was involved. One of the cases was the topic of a front page article in the Wall Street Journal in 2010. The cases are very similar as they involve the same legal issue and were litigated in California and New York. Shortly after I make my edits, the entries are deleted. I don't know who is making the deletions. Today, I saw a message on Wikipedia to me that I should stop making the edits. Is this message coming from Wikipedia? I am an insurance lawyer and my edits are entirely accurate and extremely relevant. The court cases are referred to as the Kramer, Teren and Fishman decisions. What am I doing wrong? They left this message a few weeks ago (clicking the History link on your page will show every edit, and who left it). The additions I undid today were due to them not having a source listed. Because they mentioned specific people by name, and it could be seen as negative, our policy on edits regarding living people requires they be sourced. If you can provide a source for those, such as WSJ or well known publications (and preferably not solely a Lexis link as the average reader will not have access, though a Lexis citation is appropriate for completeness), then those additions should be fine. There are some templates you can use for PD attribution in an article, either {{Source-attribution}} or {{CC-notice}}; probably the latter would have been the better choice for that page if the hand-written notice hadn't already been there. Also, I think you may not be aware of {{Translated page}}, which is probably easier to use than {{Copied}} for attribution of interwiki translations (it goes on the talk page, like Copied). I'm not aware of any obligation to acknowledge translations in the source wiki, but I suppose a note of thanks on the talk page is unlikely to give offence. Hello, question: Is placing Category:Wikipedia administrators on one's user page, when not actually an admin, considered impersonation? Remove it. Aside from anything else, it's an inaccurate use of the category. It's also confusing to other users, and hence mildly disruptive. Definitely a case where editing someone else's userpage would be permitted. Yunshui ^雲_水 08:35, 15 October 2014 (UTC)

• Hello Druidpepo. Yes this happens a lot, and people don't understand why, which is ok. The problem is that we have no way of knowing who wrote the LinkedIn page, or if you are the same person. I'm not suggesting that you are doing anything wrong, but just that we don't know for 100%. With copyright, we have to be sure. If you email permissions-en@wikimedia.org they can verify all the facts and tell you how to release your content on LinkedIn so it can be used here. They do all that verifying through email to protect your privacy, which is why we would not do that on a page like this one. I hope this helps. Feel free to ask me any questions here. I see more and yet more whole vast swathes of SCV listings very competently dealt with, so came to offer some more thanks. What you are doing is really making a difference. You left a sort of question about wikimapia. I don't know the answer, but my take is this: it's a wiki, so not WP:RS, and we don't have any guarantee (as we've seen) that the content licenced as free is in fact free; so my inclination is not to attribute it, but simply to remove any content copied from it. Thanks again for your reply. We were about to move forward with option 1 that you suggested for the copyright and it turns out that the page was deleted. This is so frustrating and seems stupid for someone (me) that has no idea what they are doing to even attempt. I don't know the artist personally but agreed to help her create this page. Delete/recreate

• It actually doesn't need deleting, just a Revision Delete (revdel) of the offending versions. You can get the revision number (if you didn't already know) by clicking the Date Stamp in the history next to the first and last versions that contain the material. The url for those pages will end with "oldid=some number". That number is the version of the page. You then plug those into Template:Copyvio-revdel, using the syntax given there, and put it at the top of the current rev of the page. Thanks for the help again! Copyright checks when performing AfC reviews

Hello Crow. This message is part of a mass mailing to people who appear active in reviewing articles for creation submissions. First of all, thank you for taking part in this important work! I'm sorry this message is a form letter – it really was the only way I could think of to covey the issue economically. Of course, this also means that I have not looked to see whether the matter is applicable to you in particular.

The issue is in rather large numbers of copyright violations ("copyvios") making their way through AfC reviews without being detected (even when easy to check, and even when hallmarks of copyvios in the text that should have invited a check, were glaring). A second issue is the correct method of dealing with them when discovered.

If you don't do so already, I'd like to ask for your to help with this problem by taking on the practice of performing a copyvio check as the first step in any AfC review. The most basic method is to simply copy a unique but small portion of text from the draft body and run it through a search engine in quotation marks. Trying this from two different paragraphs is recommended. (If you have any question about whether the text was copied from the draft, rather than the other way around (a "backwards copyvio"), the Wayback Machine is very useful for sussing that out.)

If you do find a copyright violation, please do not decline the draft on that basis. Copyright violations need to be dealt with immediately as they may harm those whose content is being used and expose Wikipedia to potential legal liability. If the draft is substantially a copyvio, and there's no non-infringing version to revert to, please mark the page for speedy deletion right away using {{db-g12|url=URL of source}}. If there is an assertion of permission, please replace the draft article's content with {{subst:copyvio|url=URL of source}}.

Some of the more obvious indicia of a copyvio are use of the first person ("we/our/us..."), phrases like "this site", or apparent artifacts of content written for somewhere else ("top", "go to top", "next page", "click here", use of smartquotes, etc.); inappropriate tone of voice, such as an overly informal tone or a very slanted marketing voice with weasel words; including intellectual property symbols (™,®); and blocks of text being added all at once in a finished form with no misspellings or other errors.

I don't think it's unreasonable to remove the archiving parameter until such time as he checks his talk page. Someone who runs an extremely active bot and is regularly away for weeks or months at a time sure as hell should not have his talk page being archived on a weekly or fortnightly basis. • As the bot's tag says, if it is truly a false positive, then (unlike many other tags here) it is perfectly fine to remove the notice. Believe me I understand the frustration, but the bot's sole function is to flag Possible violations, which it does very well 99%+ of the time. It can whitelist based on web sites (domain names down to page links), so if you have one source that is constantly getting flagged, then by all means report it. The unseen problem with CC sources is that they get mirrored all over the place, so it is hard to confirm the license. That's why (again) the bot flags a possible violation and leaves it to a human to make the determination.
• On the archive bot, I think the better course is to email him using the sidebar link. Or failing that, watch his contributions to see when he returns and ping him then. Perhaps even a ping on your own talk page so he will see the alert, and you can leave that there as long as you wish. Crow^Caw 01:48, 26 November 2014 (UTC)

• @Dominic James O26: Hi! Thanks for wanting to contribute. Unfortunately, as you've seen, your article got deleted for notability reasons. See WP:N which will tell you what "notability" means here (it is not meant to be an insulting term), and WP:GNG for a guideline to know the kind of sources and references needed to prove "notability". Basically, you need to have gotten a large amount of press that you yourself did not write (so no Facebook, press releases, that kind of thing). The best way to proceed it to click that "Visit the Teahouse" link on your talk page, where there are numerous folks to help you with getting an article started. MCQ post

Just a quick constructive comment about one of your posts. Your statement that if the author is not willing to do so, then the image can only be used here under Fair Use ... is not entirely correct. We do not accept fair use as an alternative but apply a much stricter non-free criteria, and if an image is not released freely it cannot just be claimed as fair use. It must comply with all 10 non-free content policy guidelines which is not exactly what you told the poster. To me your phraseology imples that fair use could be an alternate, which is of course not the case, but the impression for newbies reading it could IMHO that fair use can be claimed if they can't find a free image. Beside that I always feel one must clearly make the distintion, especially when a poster mentions it, that we do not allow fair-use but use a much stricter criteria based on the NFCC policy. Mrdullins returns

I've finally had a chance to re-work the page you and I discussed back in September 2014. (That discussion is in your Archive 2, but I couldn't figure out how to add to that string so I started a new conversation here.)

Your original concerns related to copyright issues and the possibility that the website I had created about our school might be seen as a sales nature. I have removed comments related to our course offerings, how to contact the school (except for a link to our website), etc. to try to avoid the sales "feel." And the content itself has been totally re-written and quotes cited where they occur so we can avoid the copyright questions.

Before I submit for review, however, I'd like to add links to the appropriate categories as I have seen done in other articles, but I'm not certain how to LOCATE those categories in the first place. I know that seems very elementary, but when I search for what might be a category name, I get specific articles instead. Is there any way to see which categories exist out there without merely browsing through the category list?

• Hi Mrdullins, and good to see you back! I'm glad you weren't put off by some of the quirks in policy here. I've looked over the new version and I think you're ok from a copyright perspective, and mostly ok from a promotional perspective. There are still 1 or 2 small bits, but nothing that should be problematic (see my edit to the lead section for the kind of thing I mean). It is not exclusively promotional, which is the red flag for that. I like the history section as well.
• As far as Categories go, those don't get applied until the draft is accepted and promoted. This is just so a draft doesn't show up in the live category list which could draw readers to an incomplete article. Finding the right category though, to your question, is an art unto itself. One way is to start typing in the search field in the upper-right of the page, stating with "Category:". As you type, categories that match will appear in the list. For example, if you start typing Category: Private schools in D, you'll see that Category:Private Schools in Dallas Texas appears as one of the options, and would be a likely one to use here. Another method to identify appropriate categories is to find an existing article about a similar institution and see what categories it uses.

• Hello Drmustaffa! I didn't see that article but it appears to have been deleted because it did not show why it was "notable". On Wikipedia, "notable" means: Have other people, not related to that INGO, written about it or discussed it in detail, such as in news, magazines, journals, books, television, radio, interviews, etc. If they have, then it should be easy to find links to those discussions, and add them into the article. The pages here which discuss those requirements in detail are: WP:GNG for the things that have to be in an article for it to be considered "notable", and WP:RS for the kinds of sources that we do and don't consider valid for showing notability.
