Images and fair use
Hey, you know images, if you want, could you check out the revert I just did on 1 Night in Paris? A user changed the image from the DVD cover to a scene from the movie. Is that Ok to do on NFCC grounds? Mark Arsten (talk) 02:07, 27 April 2012 (UTC)
- It seems posters are preferred, followed by VHS / DVD covers (as they are used to market the film and thus more widely known). Screencaps can be used, but are generally supplemental. Crisco 1492 (talk) 02:10, 27 April 2012 (UTC)
- Ok, that's what I assumed, thanks. Mark Arsten (talk) 02:15, 27 April 2012 (UTC)
- LOL it was a gif? Yeah, that's pushing it. Crisco 1492 (talk) 02:23, 27 April 2012 (UTC)
- Yeah, I had a bit of a laugh about that. I couldn't treat it as vandalism, because it actually did illustrate the subject and had a fair use tag. Maybe this is the whole "principle of least astonishment" people are always talking about. Mark Arsten (talk) 02:58, 27 April 2012 (UTC)
- FWIW, I generally err on the side of caution with screenshots; if they don't actually illustrate something being specifically discussed in the article's prose (colour tints in Manhunter or the Red Room in "Episode 2" for example) then I would challenge their worth as content. Unless a gif is animating a very pertinent section then I'd rule it right out. GRAPPLE X 03:03, 27 April 2012 (UTC)
- It was a blowjob by PH. Not really discussed, unless someone can find reliable sources discussing her technique. I tend to not use screenshots, although I probably could. Crisco 1492 (talk) 03:07, 27 April 2012 (UTC)

Feels good to have that at GA, after reading all that stuff about the Klan. BTW, I gave our IP date-changer friend a 3RR warning. Clara Sinta
The actress in Mencari Madonna, although IMDB uses "Sinta", Shinta returns more ghits. Which is the correct spelling? --SupernovaExplosion Talk 10:08, 30 April 2012 (UTC)

- Hmm, there must be two different surnames: Sinta and Shinta - both Indonesian. Shinta is also a given name in Japanese Shinta Nojiri. Clarashinta Arumdani was Miss Indonesia. --SupernovaExplosion Talk 10:52, 30 April 2012 (UTC)

rev delete
- That would be Wikipedia:Requests for oversight. – Ling.Nut3 (talk) 05:10, 2 May 2012 (UTC)
- I've never seen anyone actually follow through on that. Crisco 1492 (talk) 07:10, 2 May 2012 (UTC)
- You mean, on the case that just happened, or on any case ever? If you mean the latter, then I have seen them oversight things fairly swiftly, when it has been requested. – Ling.Nut3 (talk) 08:45, 2 May 2012 (UTC)
- I've asked for it before, and never saw it complete. Meanwhile, MRG and a couple other Admins have been willing to rev delete while waiting for oversight to handle things. Crisco 1492 (talk) 08:46, 2 May 2012 (UTC)

British Titanic inquiry DYK picture
Thanks for dealing with Template:Did you know nominations/British Wreck Commissioner's inquiry into the sinking of the RMS Titanic and adding it to the prep 1 area. There are a couple of things that may still need sorting out:
- (1) There is a 'dubious' tag on the article that should really be sorted out before it goes up on the main page. I've asked Prioryman (the other main editor of the article) if they have time to take a look.
- (2) The picture used won't work well on the DYK main page slot. I would prefer the first hook be used with the picture of Lord Mersey, as that works better at the image size used in the DYK slot. I know the hook is less interesting, but I would prefer a better picture be used rather than it get moved down.
- (3) There is a 'twin' nomination on the US Senate inquiry (see Template:Did you know nominations/United States Senate inquiry into the sinking of the RMS Titanic). Would it be possible to hold back the British inquiry one until that is ready (or expedite the US inquiry one)? And would it also be possible to run them on the same day, one during the British 'day' (roughly) and one in the US 'day' (roughly)?
I'll be around if needed for the next few hours, but not much after that until during the week. Carcharoth (talk) 06:53, 28 April 2012 (UTC)
- Seeing how the dubious tag is related to the hook itself, I'll pull it. For the other issues (especially number 3), you should try to seek agreement from the community.
- Regarding the image, the only reason I gave this article a lede spot was because the image wasn't an OWM - we see too many of them in the lede and we need variation. Crisco 1492 (talk) 07:27, 28 April 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks. I'll note the issue with the images in the nominations and note the existence of the other nomination in each one (they should still be separate, not combined). You are right I should raise point (3) at WT:DYK. I had mentioned them here, but got no response (this lack of response was slightly irritating given the song-and-dance being made about another DYK date-related request at around the same time). I'll try again with the more specific 'twinning' request. Hopefully the 'dubious' tag issue will get sorted soon. Carcharoth (talk) 07:56, 28 April 2012 (UTC) PS. OWM?
- Old white male... you'll notice that more often than not, if there is a picture of a person it's probably an OWM. Crisco 1492 (talk) 08:03, 28 April 2012 (UTC)
- Ah, right! Ironic, then, that the other picture may be cropped to focus on a (now dead) white male. BTW, I believe the phrase is dead white male, not old white male, though maybe you literally meant old people. Carcharoth (talk) 08:21, 28 April 2012 (UTC)
- LOL, that's the one. Mind you, most DWMs we see at DYK are OWMs in their pictures. Crisco 1492 (talk) 08:26, 28 April 2012 (UTC)

Could you have another look at the nomination? I think things are sorted now, but does anything need doing to make that clearer? Also, my 'twinning' request at WT:DYK hasn't elicited any interest (or indeed any replies). Next time I do this, I'll put both articles on the same DYK nomination page and propose two concurrent hooks (as opposed to a combined one). That would make such a 'twinning' request much easier. Carcharoth (talk) 02:03, 3 May 2012 (UTC)
prep 4
Prep 4 contains the highly disputed abuse of young children. I don't think to place the Serious songs by Brahms next to it is a good idea. The author mentioned jokes and Easter egg tree as a balance. Sorry, kind of sarcastic (and Easter egg tree appeared already), --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:20, 2 May 2012 (UTC)
- They aren't "next to each other". They were already 3 hooks apart, now I've added an extra two hooks between them. Crisco 1492 (talk) 14:23, 2 May 2012 (UTC)
- Also, it was added by Panyd. Crisco 1492 (talk) 14:26, 2 May 2012 (UTC)
- Fixed by BlueMoonset, thanks for looking, now we have sex in the bathroom, but much less offensive, --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:08, 2 May 2012 (UTC)
- Mmm... I guess bathroom sex is less controversial. Crisco 1492 (talk) 16:11, 2 May 2012 (UTC)
- Try telling that to my missus... :( GRAPPLE X 16:12, 2 May 2012 (UTC)
-
- And to think I was using sex in the bathroom to separate two literary journals. :-) I wonder if it's the first time that's happened. (Probably not.) As long as I have you all here, any thoughts on reducing hooks from 8 to 7? I'd like to get more opinions on the matter in WT:DYK. Thanks! BlueMoonset (talk) 23:33, 2 May 2012 (UTC)
- I think seven is fine (I've set prep 1 at seven for now; it's fairly long already) Crisco 1492 (talk) 23:36, 2 May 2012 (UTC)

Hey Crisco, you promoted this for DYK, but I still detect issues: the hook says he's second to Lady Gaga, but that statement is not so well verified. Look at the current version: notes 24, 75, 76, 77 should verify the hook, but 24 dates from July 2011; 75 has disappeared as has 77; and 77 isn't so clear and its information is obviously based on an outside source which may or may not be reliable. What I am trying to do is find a recent, reliable reference that ranks him no. 2, so I can reinstate the very valid "As of" template, removed by an overzealous recentist editor. Drmies (talk) 16:34, 3 May 2012 (UTC)
- I finally found a reliable source that explicitly compares the two: this one ("languishing behind" means he's second, I guess). This is one of the sloppiest articles we may have ever sent to the front page--I challenge anyone to go through my recent edits and disagree with them! I'm not even going to look at Lady Gaga on Twitter--it's written by the same people, no doubt. BTW, the hook needs to be looked at as well: we owe it to ourselves to have a proper date in there to prevent the kind of WP:RECENTISM that was completely overlooked in the writing of the article. Thanks, Drmies (talk) 16:52, 3 May 2012 (UTC)
- Using toolserve, I have checked every single link that indicated a problem, removed links that were dead (which in all cases had other sources already) or found the correct url. Problem solved. Thanks for informing me. --LauraHale (talk) 21:51, 3 May 2012 (UTC)
- Sure thing. And I was glad to instate the "as of" template--it only took me half an hour to find one that actually compared the two accounts, in between other copy edits. I trust you will do the same for the Gaga article. Also, use of Google snippets is discouraged, as is the use of all-caps. Drmies (talk) 22:30, 3 May 2012 (UTC)
