Changes at the Talk header template doc page

[edit]

I've undone about half of your run of 23 edits at Template:Talk header/doc, involving additions of <syntaxhighlight> tags all over the doc page. That pretty well wrecked all of the parameter examples. It resulted in all of the sample Template header boxes (and parts of the header box) disappearing from the rendered doc page, and being replaced with arcane boxes full of wikicode, which nobody coming to this template is interested in seeing. The doc page for Template:Talk header is not a course in how to write wikicode for a {{Tmbox}}; it's about how to use the rather complex {{Talk header}} template, along with its numerous parameters, and what happens to the Talk header box when you change this or that parameter value. Your changes completely destroyed all of that, and they have been removed. I've left all of your other changes in that edit run as is, except for a couple of minor ones which were not an improvement. Template:Talk header is a complex template used on over 600,000 pages, and changes to the doc should be undertaken with great care. If you're not sure of the difference between rendering a {{tmbox}} template in order to display a box on the page, and displaying the transclusion wikicode, you probably should not be editing that page. Please be very cautious with such edits going forward. Thanks, Mathglot (talk) 06:11, 17 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Mathglot: I knew that was a mistake but then I forgot about it. For some reason, the sample Template header boxes are not visible on mobile devices, so I thought that the documentation was meant to show the wikicode. From now on, I will see desktop versions of these pages as well, to be careful. Thank you for letting me know. —CrafterNova [ TALK ]  [ CONT ] 07:37, 17 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, np. Can you give me an example of one box that is not visible on mobile devices, and I will look into it. Mathglot (talk) 08:14, 17 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
All of the boxes were invisible to me, and I saw the desktop version just after this talk page notification.—CrafterNova [ TALK ]  [ CONT ] 08:22, 17 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I rarely use mobile view (I use mobile devices, but with desktop view; if it helps you any, you could try that. That's not a solution to your issue, but it's a temporary workaround that could work for you for a while.) I'll look into what's going on with mobile view, maybe it's the normal behavior not to show the boxes, but in that case, the verbiage in the doc page should change, so it doesn't confuse users of mobile view. (It's possible to provide different text for mobile view and desktop view, and that might be a solution, if the boxes are normally never shown in mobile view.) Thanks again, and feel free to do your own research on this and keep me informed, because I don't really know any more about mobile view than you do, and probably less. Mathglot (talk) 08:36, 17 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Mathglot: To me, the mobile view not showing template transclusions seems like a bug in the MediaWiki software.
If it's not a bug, then the only workarounds are desktop view and switching to desktop devices.
If it is a bug, then MediaWiki developers can try to modify the software in order show transclusions like {{tmbox}}es in mobile view. —CrafterNova [ TALK ]  [ CONT ] 09:06, 17 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, it is a bug (T257394). I raised this discussion, and got a response; feel free to follow along there. Mathglot (talk) 09:23, 18 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Would be great if it gets fixed. —CrafterNova [ TALK ]  [ CONT ] 09:32, 18 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Indeed it would! In the meantime, I was inspired to create a workaround for this problem in the form of a new template called Template:Tmboxw ('w' for workaround). It is currently used only in Template:Talk header, but it should fix the problem you were encountering. Please visit {{Talk header}} on desktop and on mobile, and tell me if you notice any problems. (Naturally, the boxes are squished, because they don't fit in a narrow device, but I'm not sure if there's a solution for that.) Please raise any bugs or issues directly at Template talk:Tmboxw.

If you've noticed this problem in mobile view in other locations, please let me know below, or on my Talk page. Thanks again for your involvement with this, as it has helped result in this workaround, which I hope will be of use to others as well. Mathglot (talk) 03:46, 19 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Agree. I will surely notify you if I see any other bugs like these. You are welcome ;) —CrafterNova [ TALK ]  [ CONT ] 05:35, 19 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
