[edit]Thanks for contributing to the article Game design. However, one of Wikipedia's core policies is that material must be verifiable, by being clearly attributed to reliable sources, preferably using an inline citations. Please help by adding more sources for the material you created, and/or by clarifying how the sources already in the article support the material (see here for how to do inline referencing). Thanks! - @Evad37: I fully agree I need to add sources and citations to the content I've added to the Game design page; I intend to do so. However, one confusion I have regarding Wikipedia sourcing, which I haven't been able to find an answer to in the editing "how to" sections, is how to handle statements that summarize pieces of information from existing wikipedia pages. For example, I added the following sentence: "Flying discs led to disc golf and Ultimate." to a paragraph giving examples of how new media led to new games. This information is from the linked wiki-articles. Do such summary statements require sourcing? (I know that sections that summarize *entire* articles do not require sourcing.) What about sentences that draw on information on other, linked, wiki-pages? What about an article that draws information from multiple wiki-pages (all linked)? What guidelines cover this? - The policy is Wikipedia:Verifiability –
All material in Wikipedia mainspace, including everything in articles, lists and captions, must be verifiable. All quotations, and any material whose verifiability has been challenged or is likely to be challenged, must include an inline citation that directly supports the material. Any material that needs a source but does not have one may be removed.
If the point "likely to be challenged" means anything that isn't obvious to a non-expert (i.e. anything to which someone could reasonably say "Prove it!"), than almost everything you add should have an inline citation – in both a detailed article, and as part of a summary in another article. The other point to remember is that each article should be able to be viewed as a stand-alone work (even if they have sections that summarise other articles). If someone decides to print the article, or otherwise only looks at that particular article, they should still be able to verify the information presented. Also, the 'source' articles may be updated at some point in the future, and the referenced content may be removed as unneccesary, or the examples may be changed, etc., making any 'by-proxy' verification inherently unstable. The main situations when citations are not required are that you don't need to cite that the sky is blue or other bits of very common knowledge (although there is an opposing viewpoint), and within the lead when the material is referenced elsewhere in the article (except for direct quotations and contentious material about living persons) - Evad37 [talk] 06:00, 13 December 2014 (UTC)- I came by to mention something similar. My rule of thumb is if you are reading something and want to add some info to an article, you should source it from what you are reading right then, even if it is a low quality source. Better sources can always be found later, and a low quality source is better than no source. If you are pulling information from another article (which I frequently do), it is best to pull information that is already sourced, or pull statements that are easy to google. I caution against pulling new information from your head.
