The Toronto Council Fire Native Cultural Centre (Council Fire) is an Indigenous cultural centre based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Established in 1978 and incorporated on February 9, 1982, it has been a member of the Ontario Federation of Indigenous Friendship Centres (OFIFC) since October 24, 19821.
History: Council Fire was established by founding directors R. Gordon Byce, Margaret MacLeod, Clarence Decaire, Raphael Dokis, Carol Farkas, Larry Leong, Alastaire Paterson, Jacqueline Rosen, Dr. Larry Rosen, and Lydia Somers[1]. Over the past several decades, the centre has established itself as a significant contributor to the Greater Toronto Area, earning respect for its dedication to supporting the community[2].
Activities and Services: Council Fire provides a compassionate and understanding environment, offering acceptance, love, respect, and support to those seeking assistance[3]. It also organizes the Toronto Council Fire Indigenous Legacy Gathering at Nathan Phillips Square, an event that celebrates Indigenous cultures, traditions, and languages through workshops, presentations, stories, teachings, dance, film, and music[4].
Additionally, Council Fire has collaborated with Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment (MLSE). This partnership has led to fundraising initiatives like the auctioning of Indigenous-inspired warm-up jerseys worn by the Maple Leafs, with the proceeds benefiting Council Fire[5]. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of an Indigenous-inspired merchandise collection and the MLSE Foundation’s 50/50 raffle also support the centre's work[6].
