FIFA World Cup not FA
[edit]Did you see that? It appears that our first nomination has failed. Was this due process? Did we receive ample time to react to comments made on the article? I was just wondering, that's all... — Ian Manka Talk to me‼ 06:35, 4 March 2006 (UTC)
- Well, I guess the only way to look at this is that we need to correct our "sloppy english" (if I recall correctly). I was shocked to find that FA status was denied. We'll try again, and we WILL get it featured by WC2006. Thanks for your work! — Ian Manka Talk to me‼ 07:07, 4 March 2006 (UTC)
Stub sizes
[edit]I do it from the database dumps, or more accurately, from partial dumps of the "page" and "categorylinks" table, which are somewhat more manageable in size. (I believe they can also be done from (near-)live copies of the database, which I presume requires an account on the toolsserver machine.) A complete list is no trouble; would in alphabetic order of category name, or numeric order by size be of more use to you? I currently can't quite do it in the current format of WSS/ST, though, which is a sorta ad hoc traversal. Alai 16:18, 6 March 2006 (UTC)
OK, here it is. If you'd prefer a different format, just let me know. Alai 20:57, 6 March 2006 (UTC)
Wow, that was quite some update... If you're planning another sometime, feel free to give me a bell. Alai 16:30, 7 March 2006 (UTC)
Barnstar
[edit]Thanks for the barnstar :) --TheParanoidOne 20:49, 6 March 2006 (UTC)
Yay!
[edit]Hi Conscious,
Congratulations for the Featured status, you did some amazing work on that article. Working with you is always great, glad I could give you a hand. Thanks a ton for the Barnstar, maybe we need to do something about the gender in its title though :p :) -Aabha (talk) 16:37, 7 March 2006 (UTC)
Automatic update possiblity
[edit]I saw your amazing update by hand. I am exited and dismayed, I just spent about 4 and a half hours adding code to User:Gnome (Bot) to do the same task. As a result I am asking you if it is ok if the bot does one update every saterday. (I have already tested it on half of the page, and yours and my results match.)
- Also, my bot can get the categories directly off of the page, It does not require a list to be made ahead of time. (really no user imput is required other than to check it(make sure it did not goof up or any thing... and to do one copy and paste, to the area under section stubs.(untill the end of the categories)--The bot retrieves the infomation in the order it is on the page.
- Of coarse if you want to do it yourself, I'll try and find other uses for my code... Not sure where...:-)Eagle (talk) (desk) 03:27, 8 March 2006 (UTC)
- Please respond on my page.

Won't be running as soon as I thought
[edit]Sorry, but I am going to be unavailable to help with wikipedia for a week or two...If you feel nessacary I will not be insulted if you run your code...I have put 15 hours into this bot(for this task) and it is chokeing on redlinks...If you want to take this task from me I will stand by, If not...I will be back to it in about 2 weeks...In this time I may or may not be successful with this evil bug I found:-(.Eagle (talk) (desk) 20:10, 17 March 2006 (UTC)
- Please leave a response on my page...If you want to take over I will not object as I have practically failed...I will try agian in two weeks unless you want to do this instead...either way...just let me know:-)
Ok I will try agian
[edit]If I can figure out a way to fix the redlink problem I would be set...As I said I won't be available to put any major work in for the next few weeks...so I probably could get this done in 2-3 weeks...Being optimistic.
- I will give it my best shot!Eagle (talk) (desk) 18:30, 18 March 2006 (UTC)
Also...
[edit]For my bot to work right it needs to find the "<" symbol at the end of every counted line...Next time you run the update...can you put these infront of the articles counted in number of pages...My bot is going to change these into < ####.
In other words every instance of # pages should be changed to <####. Umm tell me any Ideas if you think this is a problem...I have spoken to User:Alai about this...It should be on his page somewhere or in a talk page somewhere(I've lost track of where I have had to go to defend the bot...Nobody wants to help, they just want to give me the problem without any Ideas for a solution...(I know they don't program...but atleast they could offer other ideas to do the same task that they would be ok with). That is why alot of my programming effort has gone to WP:CU...They don't think I'm perfect, but when they object they give a pleathora of better ways. (Sorry for the rant:-))
- My bot will be unable to update the page unless the < symbol is there.(it tells it where the end of the line is) perhaps you can help me here...What do the action scripts do???
Eagle (talk) (desk) 18:46, 18 March 2006 (UTC)
Helping hand
[edit]Perhaps you and I can work togather on the automation of stub counting...My bot will count every thing...and can put them to an unformatted list(like User:Alai/Small stubs3 with no problems provided that the bot does not hit and redlinks. (trying to fix that bitch of a bug)...It's halfway fixed, It will recognize the blank page but it still hooks up on it. I just can't get the bot to skip it...No matter how many time I put the skipPage(articleTitle); function in it.:-(.
- I guess what I am asking for is a detialed description on how your action scripts work...If you can help me substantally I will make sure that you are recognized on Gnome (bot)'s page, and else where.
- The bot's program is in C++/CLI...If you know that I will send you the appropriate parts of the source code.Eagle (talk) (desk) 21:56, 18 March 2006 (UTC)
The second problem is telling the bot where the end of the line is...As mentioned above right now it is the < symbol...Any ideas...
- The bot can tell what lines are not category stubs, just it cannot tell when the line ends with out the < symbol...A real programatic pain.Eagle (talk) (desk) 21:59, 18 March 2006 (UTC)

My RFA withdrawal :(
[edit]Hello Conscious, it is my apologies to bring you that I've withdrawn my RFA. Due to the lack of experience, I would go under admin coaching first before trying again later. I would thank you for your vote in this RFA whether you voted support, oppose or neutral for me. I appericiate your comments (if you do have) you made and I hope to see you here in future. --Terence Ong 14:22, 18 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit]Have a look at Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approvals#User:Gnome (Bot) requesting trial run and evential bot flag, I will ask you for help in about a month, I'm sorry but the cleanup backlog is far more of a problem than counting stubs:-).
- Feel free to rant and blow up on my page....I'm really sorry for backing out...but User:Alba and WP:CU came to me with a request for automated cleanup, I was able to do this, and I don't have to worry about the red-link problem.
- When...NOT IF...I come back to finish this, I would appreciate some help and or ideas on how to tell if a category has been deleted...This problem has given me a headache for about 2 weeks:-)...Part of the reason whey I changed gnome bot's mission....Eagle (talk) (desk) 18:44, 27 March 2006 (UTC)
- Plus WP:CU's members have been VERY SUPPORTIVE and have given me many ideas.

I included Nadym for the sole purpose of having the rankings come out correctly, since Salekhard was the fourth-largest city in Yamalia. I didn't want to mislead anyone into believing that it is the third-largest city. Backspace 19:51, 29 March 2006 (UTC)

I've been doing some copyediting on the World Cup article, seeing as that was the only reason for objections in the failed FAC. I don't think it's too far off being ready for resubmission, what do you think? Oldelpaso
- I agree. After Oldelpaso's copyediting, I think it is ready for another go. Can I submit it this time? ;) — Ian Manka Talk to me‼ 06:01, 10 April 2006 (UTC)

- Re the points raised in FAC and peer review you mentioned on my talk page:
- Coin toss - Daniel Case is thinking of the 1968 European Football Championship, where Italy won the semi-final by tossing a coin. Prior to penalties, replays (or playoffs if a group was tied) were used, though Morocco twice progressed in qualification following a coin toss - at the expense of Tunisia both times! This is covered in the respective qualifying subarticles. Might be worth mentioning the first penalty shootout though. 1978 for qualifying (Tunisia and Morocco again, bizzarely [1]) and 1982 for the finals.
- Non participants - 197 countries attempted to qualify for 2006, but there are 205 FIFA members. At some point I'll look whether any of the eight missing countries have never competed.
- Political influence is generally mentioned in the subarticles, or at least it is in those two cases, so I don't think that's a problem.
- Cancelled world cups - surely we don't need to explain any further than saying it was due to WWII? The Copa America continued during this time, but I don't think that merits a mention in the main World Cup article. Likewise, FIFA World Cup 1938 could do with something in prose about Austria withdrawing due to the Anschluss, but that doesn't affect the main article
- Media is the most difficult one, I'm unsure about that. Might as well look into it though. Oldelpaso 18:35, 10 April 2006 (UTC)
Zhizhi Chanyu

[edit]Thanks so much for voting! Thanks so much for voting on my request for adminship. I have decided to withdraw my nomination as it seems that consensus will not be reached. Question about your stub-count script
[edit]I've updated the old list, in the same format, but I've also added a count of the subcategories to this list. Can your script do the updates from that format too? (I assume just ignoring the second count, unless you want to incorporate that in some manner.) Alai 23:36, 2 May 2006 (UTC)
- Good. I'll likely use that format from now on, as it's more convenient for "SFD-hunting" purposes. Alai 05:28, 3 May 2006 (UTC)
