WikiCup 2024 November newsletter

[edit]

The 2024 WikiCup has come to an end, with the final round being a very tight race. Our new champion is AirshipJungleman29 (submissions), who scored 2,283 points mainly through 3 high-multiplier FAs and 3 GAs on military history topics. By a 1% margin, Airship beat out last year's champion, Delaware BeanieFan11 (submissions), who scored second with 2,264 points, mainly from an impressive 58 GAs about athletes. In third place, Generalissima (submissions) scored 1,528 points, primarily from two FAs on U.S. Librarians of Congress and 20 GAs about various historical topics. Our other finalists are: Sammi Brie (submissions) with 879 points, Canada Hey man im josh (submissions) with 533 points, BennyOnTheLoose (submissions) with 432 points, Arconning (submissions) with 244 points, and Christmas Island AryKun (submissions) with 15 points. Congratulations to our finalists and all who participated!

The final round was very productive, and contestants had 7 FAs, 9 FLs, 94 GAs, 73 FAC reviews, and 79 GAN reviews and peer reviews. Altogether, Wikipedia has benefited greatly from the activities of WikiCup competitors all through the contest. Well done everyone!

All those who reached the final will receive awards and the following special awards will be made, based on high performance in particular areas of content creation. So that the finalists do not have an undue advantage, these prizes are awarded to the competitor who scored the highest in any particular field in a single round, or in the event of a tie, to the overall leader in this field.

Next year's competition will begin on 1 January. You are invited to sign up to participate; the WikiCup is open to all Wikipedians, both novices and experienced editors, and we hope to see you all in the 2025 competition. Until then, it only remains to once again congratulate our worthy winners, and thank all participants for their involvement!

The Seattle Center

[edit]

Clearly we see this differently. Can you provide some examples where e.g. Seattle Times calls the entire complex "The Seattle Center"? We're not talking about uses like, "The Seattle Center fountain" or "The Seattle Center Armory building" or "The Seattle Center Foundation. Speaking of which, please find an example of your usage anywhere on https://seattlecenter.org/ Thanks. (— 𝐬𝐝𝐒𝐝𝐬 — - talk) 01:42, 2 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Sdsds: From The Seattle Times: This recent article heavily uses it, in reference to the whole complex, in addition to this 2008 article and this profile. The use on the official/promotional website does not factor into the Manual of Style, per examples at MOS:BRAND.
I should also mention that the city council uses both forms [INDX& in legislation], but "the Seattle Center" seems to have a greater number of hits. SounderBruce 01:50, 2 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for finding those. WP:DUE seems to apply, as there are multiple opinions on which is the preferred usage. Of course that flies in the face of consistency. Perhaps the article would benefit from a short section on the multiple ways used to refer to the site. (— 𝐬𝐝𝐒𝐝𝐬 — - talk) 01:04, 5 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Sdsds: Unless a reliable source has significant coverage of the difference, it does not belong in the article. We just have to choose a rule that best fits the MOS and consensus and keep it standardized across all mention of the Seattle Center and its component buildings. SounderBruce 04:17, 5 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
And are you willing to apply that same logic to the Central Park article? Rockefeller Center? New York Penn Station? Yellowstone National Park? Trafalgar Square? (— 𝐬𝐝𝐒𝐝𝐬 — - talk) 06:04, 5 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Collab Idea

[edit]

Hi SounderBruce! Hope everything is going well. I was wondering if you would be interested in a collaboration? I am pretty close to getting Packers-Seahawks rivalry to WP:GAN. I have also been working on some of the more famous games between the two. I was wondering if you would be interested in a long-term collab to create a Packers–Seahawks rivalry Good Topic? No worries if you aren't interested or have other priorities. As the resident Seattle-sports person, I figured I would ask! I am going to try to finish up Packers-Seahawks rivalry, then work on the two other missing games. Tackling Fail Mary last (I always feel like it is harder to rewrite an article compared to writing from scratch). Then it would leave the two team articles (which will be hard). I would be up for putting in the effort for Green Bay Packers but doubt I would be able to do Seattle Seahawks. Let me know what you think, and again, no big deal either way! « Gonzo fan2007 (talk) @ 21:36, 8 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Gonzo fan2007: Sounds like an interesting project! I'm not that well-versed in NFL lore, so I'll leave the game articles to you, but I certainly could try to tackle the main Seahawks article once my schedule is cleared up and other high-priority stuff is out of the way. Sports-wise, I still need to finish up my MLS Cup topic and figure out how to close out the Seattle sports season series I've been working on for just over a year. SounderBruce 22:54, 8 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Awesome. I'll be working on the game articles for a bit. Let me know when you are ready to attack Seattle Seahawks and then maybe we can develop some type of common layout for that one and Green Bay Packers. Nice work so far on MLS and the Seattle sports season series! « Gonzo fan2007 (talk) @ 16:53, 9 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you today for MLS Cup 1999, introced (in 2022): "Amid another wild Major League Soccer playoffs, I think it's fitting to write about the league's first cup rematch. The Los Angeles Galaxy and D.C. United played each other three years earlier. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 11:12, 21 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
