VERY IMPORTANT MESSAGE

[edit]

I read your article on Mary Watson Whitney. There could be a problem.

You said, at the bottom, "Source: Encyclopedia Britannia, public domain".

Which version of the EB do you mean?

The 1911 Britannica is public domain, but later versions are not. We cannot take articles from more recent versions of it. Please clarify as soon as possible. Thank you. 14:00, 20 January 2006 (UTC)

ANSWER

[edit]

I'm very sorry: The information was from the first google-hit and in the header was said, that information is availiable from the Encyclopedia Britannia.

Ah, okay.

[edit]

You took the information from a website, but not the wording. That's okay, then.

By the way, after you leave a message on a talk page, you sign it by typing a row of four tildes, thusly: ~~~~. This gives an automatic link to your userpage (in your case, User:Coffeinfreak, which is at the moment empty - I suggest you fill it with some information about yourself). You can also edit your signature to give a link to your talk page (here), or to be a color, or... well, anything you want.

Good to have you on board; thanks for responding so quickly. DS 15:30, 20 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Do someone know

[edit]
  • how I can import pictures and graphics from other Wikipedias (German, Dutch,...) into the English one?

I have announced your article at Portal:Germany/New article announcements and in the relevant box on Portal:Germany. If you write more articles related to Germany, please add them there yourself. Thank you, Kusma (討論) 21:43, 31 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello

[edit]

I saw your article on Düsselthal. I've decided to give it a little copy edit (mostly for typo's), I hope you don't mind. That's what brought me to your page. Then I saw that you have a question on how to get the pictures from the German Wikipedia up for use in the enwiki. If you still want to know, let me know and I'll walk you trough it. (It's a little tedious but definitely worth it!)  :) --Mmounties (Talk) 03:40, 2 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, that would be very nice!

It seemed like you were - at least - very familiar with the area.  :)
Now, first off, I noticed that your post appeared in the middle of my talk page. I assume that you tried to find the right place to insert it. That actually is quite easy. If you just click the "+" sign on the tabs it will automatically put the new post in the right place.
Ok. To move pictures from the dewiki (short for the German Wikipedia) to the Commons for use in enwiki (similarly short for the English one) and everywhere else:
  • first you need to download the pictures to your hard drive.
Click image for an example of an image page
I put them in a folder all by themselves and make sure I do not change the file name (otherwise it's a real mess). You need to watch out particularly that the extensions don't get changed from lower to upper case and vice versa so you need to make sure you check the "suggested new file name" carefully and change what's needed.
  • then you access the Commons from the main page. If you haven't yet, create a user there as well.
Click image for an example of an image I moved from dewiki
)(I just direct all to please post on my enwiki talk page - you may want to ask all to post on your dewiki page - and I place interwiki links to my enwiki page on my various project pages to help people find it.)
  • then you click the Upload file link in the Commons and select the picture you downloaded. In the description area copy and paste the information from the image page including the file history there and make a note of the license indicated there.
  • then edit the copied language to make sure that the original uploader's name is properly linked to a user page
  • then go to Commons:Copyright tags and select the corresponding license template and place it in the description section underneath the copied material.
  • add the category that the image belongs to
  • and finally save all that.
  • now take a look at the new image page and make sure it has all the necessary information.

Now, if you didn't change any part of the name of the image file, you're almost done. You just need to go to the
image file in the dewiki and edit the image page by placing the {{NowCommons|<name of the file>}} tag at the top of the page. This will let dewiki admins know that the image is now available from the Commons under the same name and that they can delete the one in the dewiki.

To link to the image now in the Commons, all you need to do is place [[Image:<name of the file>|thumb|200px|right/left|<caption>]] into your article and you're all set. From the dewiki, it works the same way except that you need to specify "Bild" rather than "Image".

This is it. If you run into any trouble at all following these instructions, please let me know and I'll try to help you. Happy editing! --Mmounties (Talk) 19:14, 2 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I almost forgot: The reason you want to make sure that the image in the Commons has the same name as it had in dewiki is that you won't need to go back and fix the links in the German articles if they are the same name. If you modify the name even slightly (like change .jpg to .JPG, for example), the German article won't be able to find it there anymore unless you fix the link in the article. It's work no one needs.  :-) --Mmounties (Talk) 19:18, 2 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

License tagging for Image:Rackeve05 038.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Rackeve05 038.jpg. Wikipedia gets hundreds of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 23:07, 6 May 2006 (UTC)

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
