Conflict of interest policy

[edit]

Information icon Hello, Cmichel67. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a COI may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. In particular, please:

  • avoid editing or creating articles related to you and your circle, your organization, its competitors, projects or products;
  • instead propose changes on the talk pages of affected articles (see the {{request edit}} template);
  • when discussing affected articles, disclose your COI (see WP:DISCLOSE);
  • avoid linking to the Wikipedia article or website of your organization in other articles (see WP:SPAM);
  • exercise great caution so that you do not violate Wikipedia's content policies.

In addition, you must disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation (see WP:PAID).

Please familiarize yourself with relevant policies and guidelines, especially those pertaining to neutral point of view, sourcing and autobiographies. Thank you. --Ronz (talk) 16:46, 24 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! Voting in the 2022 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 12 December 2022. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2022 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 01:10, 29 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Relationship with your photography subjects

[edit]

I noticed that you add a lot of (high quality) portraits that you took yourself to Wikipedia articles of high profile individuals. While contributing high quality free photography to Wikipedia is very much appreciated, I was wondering about your potential business relationships with the individuals whose photos you add to Wikipedia articles. Are you paid for this work, if not, are your expense covered? If so, this would mean you have a (paid) conflict of interest regarding the subjects you take pictures of. In that case, it would be good if you didn't insert the pictures into articles yourself, but pointed the presence of your portrait out on the respective talk pages - for independent editors to decide whether to replace the current picture with your new ones.

I also note that you appear to have edited your own Wikipedia article. I think it would be good if you took a thorough look at (at least) the following WP policies: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Conflict_of_interest and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Paid-contribution_disclosure.

I note that you were asked about potential conflicts of interest 7 years ago but didn't reply. It would be much appreciated if you could address my comment here. AncientWalrus (talk) 09:21, 8 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, AncientWalrus. Thank you for your note. I receive no pay whatsoever for these portraits, nor are my expenses covered. I volunteer for the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering & Medicine and make photos of scientists, engineers, and leaders in medicine that I admire -- and give away all the photos under creative commons attribution licenses. No one asks me to make their photos nor to update their pages. Cmichel67 (talk) 23:05, 11 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I inserted a crucial missing word in the comment left by AncientWalrus.--FeralOink (talk) 15:37, 6 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Continued COI editing on Christopher Michael

[edit]

Blue warning iconYou have an obvious conflict of interest:

  • You must write in a non-promotional tone. Articles must be neutral and encyclopaedic, with verifiable facts, not opinions or reviews.
  • There shouldn't be any URL links in the article, only in the "References" or "External links" sections.
  • You must not copy text from elsewhere. Copyrighted text is not allowed in Wikipedia, as outlined in this policy. That applies even to pages created by you or your organisation, unless they state clearly and explicitly that the text is public domain. We require that text posted here can be used, modified and distributed for any purpose, including commercial; text is considered to be copyright unless explicitly stated otherwise. There are ways to donate copyrighted text to Wikipedia, as described here; please note that simply asserting on the talk page that you are the owner of the copyright, or you have permission to use the text, isn't sufficient.

Before attempting to write an article again, please make sure that the topic meets the notability criteria linked above, and check that you can find independent third party sources. Also read Your first article. You must also reply to the COI request above.

Despite being notified of apparent COI 7 years ago on this talk page, you have continued to substantially edit the Wikipedia page you have declared is about you personally Christopher Michael. For example, these edits were all done by you: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Christopher_Michel&diff=1036499663&oldid=963970346. Many of these edits are definitely not uncontroversial and should not have been made directly by someone with a declared conflict of interest. I would strongly urge you to reread WP:COI and abstain from making any uncontroversial edits. Instead, it would be beneficial if you proposed any edits you would like made on the talk page. Read in particular WP:COIADVICE. AncientWalrus (talk) 16:04, 18 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Ok. I'm learning. I will not edit my page. Thank you. Cmichel67 (talk) 16:12, 18 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Collection

[edit]

Hello. You may have one already, or at least considered, getting a book of your photographs together. Wikipedians who've authored books may be a good category, I'm not sure if there is a related category but probably should be (just thought of that, I knew there was a reason I came here to mention that). Thanks for your large contribution of your work to Commons and Wikipedia! Randy Kryn (talk) 14:35, 20 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you! I've done 5 books - the first, The Military Advantage, by Simon & Schuster. The other 4 are photography books. I am working on a new book called, "FAR" with author Pico Iyer. Cmichel67 (talk) 14:48, 20 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, you would certainly be in the category. The books should be mentioned in the discussed article. I hope you enjoy success with the fifth one-for-the-thumb photography book. Randy Kryn (talk) 15:28, 20 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. Pico Iyer is one of my heroes so am particularly excite about this one. Cmichel67 (talk) 15:29, 20 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

It appears that you have been canvassing—contacting editors about an ongoing community decision, debate, or vote—in order to influence Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Christopher_Michel. While friendly notices are allowed, they should be limited and nonpartisan in distribution and should reflect a neutral point of view. Please do not post notices which are indiscriminately cross-posted, which espouse a certain point of view or side of a debate, or which are selectively sent only to those who are believed to hold the same opinion as you. Remember to respect Wikipedia's principle of consensus-building by allowing decisions to reflect the prevailing opinion among the community at large. In particular, you seem to have recruited User:BWJones to the AfD discussion, off-wiki. Thank you. AncientWalrus (talk) 00:42, 23 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • AncientWalrus, you better have some evidence for such a serious charge. And is it just that one user? That's not OK, but it's also not that much. Drmies (talk) 00:44, 23 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    Sure, evidence is that BWJones is an SPA who made 5 edits 16-18 years ago, then came back to vote keep with the argument "vandalism". BWJones knows the subject of the article as evidence here. Of course, this could just be a coincidence, that BWJones happened to stumble on the AfD. However, the subject of the article, Cmichel67 is very active themselves on the AfD (probably >50% of words there), see [1]. On the balance of probabilities, I consider it likely that Cmichel67 contacted BWJones off-wiki, which is what WP:STEALTH is about. This is just a warning, it's not a block, so the evidence doesn't have to be beyond reasonable doubt, as far as I'm aware. AncientWalrus (talk) 00:55, 23 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

December 2023

[edit]

Information icon Hi Cmichel67! I noticed that you recently marked an edit as minor that may not have been. "Minor edit" has a very specific definition on Wikipedia—it refers only to superficial edits that could never be the subject of a dispute, such as typo corrections or reverting obvious vandalism. Any edit that changes the meaning of an article is not a minor edit, even if it only concerns a single word. Please see Help:Minor edit for more information. Thank you.
