"Poster House was founded in 2015 with an eye towards filling a long-acknowledged gap in the New York cultural landscape. While there are several poster museums around the world, New York, with its long relationship with advertising and design, did not have such a dedicated public institution. After several years of planning and construction, Poster House opened its doors on June 20, 2019." https://posterhouse.org/about#mission
Pre-opening Popup: “Gone Tomorrow,”
[edit]Ahead of its official opening next year, Poster House will offer a taste of its space and program with a month-long pop-up exhibition due to open on September 20. The show, “Gone Tomorrow,” will present posters, handbills, signs, and ephemera from beloved New York City venues that have closed their doors, from the Palladium concert venue to the Electric Circus nightclub. https://news.artnet.com/art-world/new-york-city-first-art-space-posters-1058588
Collection Info from: Anonymous Donors Group Raises $15 Million for First NYC Poster Museum
[edit]To be led by former apexart director Julia Knight, Poster House is working to grow its collection, which currently comprises more than a thousand posters from the 1880s to the present. Largely assembled over the past two years with gifts from collectors and advertising agencies, the collection includes a core group of World War I- and World War II-era posters and a large group of contemporary and vintage Cuban posters, as well as examples of contemporary advertising from around the world.
The project is being led by Val Crosswhite, an artist and COO of real estate firm Grettir Management, in collaboration with a group of board members who have also chosen to remain anonymous. https://philanthropynewsdigest.org/news/anonymous-donors-group-raises-15-million-for-first-nyc-poster-museum

Posters as Social Objects: Surface magazine
[edit]“Almost every art museum has a strong poster collection, and posters were frequently the subject of major shows throughout the 19th and 20th centuries,” says Angelina Lippert, chief curator at Poster House. “More recently, posters have become supplemental or supporting material in exhibitions, which is wonderful. However, posters as social objects, which generally tell us far more about a culture and a time than a painting, deserve an institution that places them center stage.”
“This is kind of why we need Poster House,” says Knight. “To really draw attention to these objects that get overlooked by both institutions and cultural consumers. Posters are one of the most ever-present artforms of the 20th and 21st centuries. In every city, they pepper the streets. They appear as background decor in nearly every movie and TV show. They’re in old photographs and books. They’re really everywhere.” https://www.surfacemag.com/articles/poster-house-museum-new-york-opening/
Better Be Distinctive: from 2017 WSJ
[edit]The museum won’t charge admission, but will ask for a suggested contribution from visitors. While such a policy may not boost Poster House’s bottom line, it speaks to the democratic nature of the medium, officials say.
Poster House is likely to benefit from its niche as one of just a handful of poster museums in the world, say observers of the cultural scene. The museum also would have the advantage of being located in a tourist hub, with proximity to such draws as the High Line park and the Chelsea art galleries.
But in a city as museum-filled as New York, Poster House will face plenty of competition, which has resulted in a handful of smaller museums closing in recent years.
A case in point: The Museum of Biblical Art, which closed in 2015 after a decade-long run
“There are just so many museums. You have to have something really distinctive to make your mark,” said Chris Heywood, senior vice president with NYC & Company, the city’s official tourism organization.

History and Mission
[edit]Too Many Quotes:
History & Mission
[edit]Poster House opened to the public on June 20, 2019. Poster House is located at 119 West 23rd Street in Manhattan, between Avenue of the Americas and 7th avenue--the location previously occupied by Tekserve.
"Poster House presents a global view of posters from their earliest appearance in the late 1800s, to their present-day use. Poster House takes its mission from the medium, aiming to engage and educate all audiences as we investigate this large format graphic design and its public impact."[1]
Poster House was founded in 2015 "with an eye towards filling a long-acknowledged gap in the New York cultural landscape. While there are several poster museums around the world, New York, with its long relationship with advertising and design, did not have such a dedicated public institution."[1]
