Bot does not archive posts in chronological order
I set the bot up to archive old posts in Talk:Timeline of agriculture and food technology, but the bot archived posts in the order that they are listed on the page, not the chronological order when these threads were posted (or last active).
If this is intentional, the bot should be changed so that it checks the revision history and/or the timestamps of signatures to determine which threads to archive.
I do know that newer posts should always be at the bottom of talk pages but quite often they aren't. That's more than sufficient reason to make the bot archive based on the chronological order. Furthermore, I think that this order of posts on talk pages should probably be reversed at some point so that newer posts are at the top because that is where most readers would see the post (rather than years-old posts that are irrelevant by now and aren't marked as solved either)...but that's a separate issue and only adds to the reasons for why ClueBot should archive based on the actual datetimes. - @Prototyperspective: Hi. I see the archive settings as 8760 hours old, min 2 threads to archive, and min 2 to keep. When the bot ran for the first time, I think the bot looked for all the threads that were 8760H old, and it moved all of these eligible threads to the archive in the same order they were present on the talkpage. It kept two threads as per the setting. You created third third after archival. According to the settings, two threads are currently older than 365 days, but they can't be archived, because then there would be only one remaining. The bot checks the talkpage daily to see if there are eligible threads to be archived. If you set
minarchthreads=
to 1, then it will give you your desired results. ie, the bot will keep on archiving the threads based on last activity. If you keep it to two, then upon creation of fourth thread, the oldest two threads (if older than 365D) will be archived in the order they appear on talkpage. I hope this helps. If not, feel free to ask again. Regards, —usernamekiran (talk) 18:52, 6 December 2022 (UTC)- Thanks, that makes sense. I think the bot should be changed so it does not avoid archiving threads based on the order on the talk page when
minkeepthreads=
is set but based on last activity. - Furthermore, I think you misunderstood my desired result: the desired result from setting
minkeepthreads=2
was to keep threads "Mistake in date of Ceide Fields" (I think that's the 2nd newest) and "Assessment comment" (chronological order) but it kept "History of US West Coast Organic Food Movement" and "Assessment comment" (order on talk page). Prototyperspective (talk) 23:35, 6 December 2022 (UTC)- @Prototyperspective: in that case {{DNAU}} (it is in day format) would be useful. Manually bring back the thread(s) to the talkpage that you want to keep for a longer time, and add DNAU to them. In total, I recommend to add DNAU to all the threads that you want to keep on talkpage for longer time, and set "minkeepthreads" to one. That would be the best. —usernamekiran (talk) 00:56, 7 December 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks but that be a workaround. In particular you'd need to manually check which threads are the newest / with the most recent activity, but the bot should do that automatically.
- Why does it not archive based on chronological activity but order on the talk page? This is a code request to change that. If there is issue tracker (is there?), then this is a bug report or a feature request if it's intentional. Prototyperspective (talk) 10:54, 7 December 2022 (UTC)
- @Prototyperspective: it does archive based on the chronological order. It looks for the oldest/most stale threads, and moves all the eligible threads to archive. —usernamekiran (talk) 17:15, 7 December 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks, that clarification was missing or imo wasn't clear enough until now.
- I now checked the for why it did not avoid archiving "Mistake in date of Ceide Fields" instead of that other lengthy talk-page-cluttering thread and it's because of an edit to that section in 2016. The current talk page viewer still says "Latest comment: 11 years ago" despite of that.
- I don't know if it would be useful if ClueBot only checked for latest activity in terms of new comments instead of copyediting or whether the talk page discussion viewer should (also) display info on the time of last activity rather than just the last comment. But that would be a minor issue. More important topics now would be:
- whether and how the order of posts on talk pages could be reversed so that newer posts are at the top where people read them (incl people don't scroll through the entire talk page but just went there for a glance)
- how to prevent bot edits like ClueBot archivals from hiding (edits and) talk page posts – phab:T302921 (that issue is currently closed)
- bot edits make it so that creations of new sections on talk pages don't appear on Watchlists where only the bot edit is shown there instead which users don't check and usually (especially for ClueBot) don't need to check and may not become aware of the earlier hidden new talk page thread
- this is a substantial problem with talk page posts as they rarely get any replies at most articles and don't seem to get noticed by more than very few editors (noticed=/=read in full; that's why the edit summary with the the thread title should not get hidden)
- But that's not specific to ClueBot and should probably be discussed separately in new thread/s elsewhere. Prototyperspective (talk) 17:37, 7 December 2022 (UTC)
