- Please bear these points in mind while editing Wikipedia
- Respect copyrights – do not copy and paste text or images directly from other websites.
- Maintain a neutral point of view – this is one of Wikipedia's core policies.
- Take particular care while adding biographical material about a living person to any Wikipedia page and follow Wikipedia's Biography of Living Persons policy. Particularly, controversial and negative statements should be referenced with multiple reliable sources.
- No edit warring or sock puppetry.
- If you are testing, please use the Sandbox to do so.
- Do not add troublesome content to any article, such as: copyrighted text, libel, advertising or promotional messages, and text that is not related to an article's subject. Deliberately adding such content or otherwise editing articles maliciously is considered vandalism; doing so will result in your account or IP being blocked from editing.
- Do not use talk pages as discussion or forum pages as Wikipedia is not a forum.
The Wikipedia tutorial is a good place to start learning about Wikipedia. If you have any questions, see the help pages, add a question to the village pump or ask me on my talk page. By the way, you can sign your name on Talk and discussion pages using four tildes, like this: ~~~~ (the software will replace them with your signature and the date). Again, welcome!
This is an automated message from CorenSearchBot. I have performed a web search with the contents of William M. Anderson, Jr., and it appears to include material copied directly from http://inauguration.umw.edu/presidents/william-m-anderson-jr-1983-2006/.
It is possible that the bot was mistaken and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article. The article will be reviewed to determine if there are any copyright issues.
If substantial content is duplicated and it is not public domain or available under a compatible license, it will be deleted. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material. You may use such publications as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. See our copyright policy for further details. (If you own the copyright to the previously published content and wish to donate it, see Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials for the procedure.) William M. Anderson, Jr. article
[edit]Hello, thank you for writing this article! I have a few concerns about it and wanted to discuss them with you. I've linked to guides that show Wikipedia's rules on the topics.
- A lot of it reads like a press release from the university, not a factual encyclopaedia article. It also copies the university biography, which isn't right for Wikipedia.
- I’m a bit concerned that it has no citations from sources aside from his work. That worries me since without proof that this person is notable, meaning covered enough in media to get a Wikipedia article on them, the article may get deleted.
Are there any extra citations you can add from reliable sources like news articles about this person demonstrating that they're notable? I'm concerned since the article may get deleted otherwise.
Let me know if you've got any questions or thoughts about this. Blythwood (talk) 17:45, 24 February 2016 (UTC)
Extra point
[edit]Looking at your contributions, they make me wonder if you might work for or represent the University of Mary Washington in some way. This isn't necessarily a problem, but if so you need to be clear in declaring it when making edits to articles. Please let me know if you have any questions. Blythwood (talk) 17:47, 24 February 2016 (UTC)
I do not work for the school, but I am a student. I am in a Digital Studies class and my task is to create a Wikipedia page that is important enough to not be deleted. The most recent presidents already have Wiki articles about them, so I decided to write one about this president who served the longest. I cannot find any additional information about him aside from what the school has written about him.Christameff (talk) 17:53, 24 February 2016 (UTC)
- OK, thanks for letting me know! The criteria for whether an academic can get an article on them are under WP:NACADEMIC and WP:PERSON.
Just to quickly summarise, independent sources are important, also is not directly plagiarising any text - if it's been published under a copyrighted website like your school's, we can't take it as the comment below explains (especially since, as I said, university bios tend to look promotional). If you can't find any independent coverage (which sounds odd to me - surely your student newspaper's done an interview or an article you could cite? I've never known a student newspaper that didn't find something about the head of admin's management they didn't have some objection to or something...!), then that might not be such a great topic for an article.
In deciding whether creating an article on someone is a good idea, those guides should help you and people from the Articles for Creation and the Teahouse project might be able to give you advice on whether if an article is worth taking beyond a draft and thinking about publishing. (Speaking for myself, I think creating pages on Wikipedia is less important than some people say - there are quite a lot of bad ones on here that could be better! But that's just me.) But best wishes with your project - let me know if you ever want to ask anything. Blythwood (talk) 18:03, 24 February 2016 (UTC)- Further to that, I also recommend reading other articles on people in comparable jobs, say this one which is good. You'll see that they start with basic facts (dates of birth and death, key biographical and employment details, area they specialised in as an academic) rather than sounding like a sales pitch for the person. That was one reason why I was worried that what you'd written didn't read like a basic factual article. Blythwood (talk) 18:07, 24 February 2016 (UTC)
Speedy deletion nomination of William M. Anderson, Jr.
[edit]If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.
You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
A tag has been placed on William M. Anderson, Jr. requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article or image appears to be a clear copyright infringement. This article or image appears to be a direct copy from http://inauguration.umw.edu/presidents/william-m-anderson-jr-1983-2006/. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites or other printed material as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.
If the external website or image belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text or image — which means allowing other people to modify it — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. If you are not the owner of the external website or image but have permission from that owner, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. You might want to look at Wikipedia's policies and guidelines for more details, or ask a question here.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines.
