Hello

[edit]

Regarding the article Ash, Surrey - you have edited, have you got any green idea about the origin of the name Ash?

My email addess on your page

[edit]

Hi Chris!

Could you please rename your "email to mdoege@compuserve.com" subpage to something else? Apparently a few people are getting the idea that this is your email address, so I am getting their comments that refer to your edits. The title of the subpage is a little misleading, apparently. Thanks! Morn 16:47, 23 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Below are some of the emails I got. I remember there were a few more, all of them negative I think ("Why did you delete X?"), always referring to articles I had never touched. But I guess I just deleted them, thinking they were some strange new kind of spam. It never occurred to me that those people might just be writing the wrong person... :-) Morn 18:41, 25 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi.. i noticed it says you removed my comment below on Galax in wikipedia I do not believe it is native to Massachusetts or New York. I believe its northernmost native state is Virginia. HOWEVER, it does grow very well in New England but is hardly there. -- Easternplantspecialties 19:53, 11 December 2006 Retrieved from "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Galax" i know galax very well ..its not native in New England..that source is wrong

Image Copyright problem
Image Copyright problem

Thank you for uploading Image:Mv-doulos-at-southampton.jpg. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the image. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. Selket Talk 14:20, 10 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading Image:Mv-doulos-at-southampton.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self-no-disclaimers}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 14:20, 10 May 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Selket Talk 14:20, 10 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your thanks, even if they are just slightly belated (I uploaded this file nearly three years ago, in November 2004). If you had checked the history, you would have seen that the image was perfectly properly licensed as my own work.
Unfortunately since then another editor has transferred the image to Commons (which I don't think existed in 2004). That is a perfectly good thing to do, but in adding the NowCommons template, he or she removed the image description and license information. The information should have been retained for historical purposes. I have reinstated it. -- Chris j wood 19:43, 10 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yep, thanks. I've updated the license on commons and deleted the copy here. The issue was that it said "GFDL" but not "GFDL-self" so the source was not explicitly stated. --Selket Talk 03:18, 11 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, thanks. Of course the template "GFDL-self" is newer (January 2005) than the image upload (November 2004) so it is hardly surprising it wasn't applied at the time. And the text was faily unambiguous that it was my photograph. Wasn't there some sort of review of older images before "GFDL" was deprecated in this way?. -- Chris j wood 11:14, 11 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
One would think so. Probably fell through the craks. --Selket Talk 14:06, 11 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Now i am beginning to wonder if the train times on the services counts as original research, partly based on personal experience. Simply south 19:57, 18 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
No. I've taken them from the FGW web site, as referenced. -- Chris j wood 20:00, 18 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
OK, just as long as they don't link directly to atimetable and it shows it somewhere on the website, i think. Simply south 20:04, 18 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think there is any rule that info cannot be sourced from a timetable. Certainly WP isn't a timetable, and what I'm trying to do on this section is give the reader a feel for the sort of service Par gets (perfectly good encyclopedic content) rather than tell him what time to turn up for a train (which would be a timetable). It is quite a fine line, and I'm still pondering myself whether there is not a tad too much detail in what I've written. -- Chris j wood 20:10, 18 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Its funny it just i got told off once for citing something from a timetable but that was my early days and i suppose it could have instead come under WP:POINT. I was worrying over changes to train times restrictions in a local train company. I suppose that does not apply here. What do you think? Simply south 20:15, 18 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Not totally sure. I've decided to sleep on it, and see if I can come up with a more overview version that still conveys what I want. Of course somebody may just do it for me in the meantime; that is the joy of WP. -- Chris j wood 20:25, 18 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Freemantle

[edit]

Hi Chris, I'm not entirely sure why you've moved Freemantle to Freemantle, Southampton - the "..., Southampton" disambiguation isn't necessary as there are no other articles called Freemantle (the Australian city only has one E). Am I missing something? -- Waggers 13:18, 21 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Nothing except my request at WP:RM to move it back. I was mislead by another editor's misspelling of the Australian city's name into thinking I'd discovered a case of disambiguation needed, when it was just a plain mis-link (unless Southampton has hosted the America's Cup without me noticing). -- Chris j wood 17:16, 21 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

List of funiculars

[edit]

Apologies for giving you more work to do in List of funiculars! I was trying to answer a question on the Talk:Cable railway page, specifically looking for those with only one car. (I had re-skimmed the Shire Albums book, mentioned as a ref in this article, and it was fresh in my mind...) As I hunted them down, links started appearing, so, rather than 'waste' them I dropped them in the article. I didn't have time for 'polish', sorry.

You may be interested to know that the two sites in 'external links' cover an awful lot of the UK funiculars (including some not listed on WP.) You may also be dismayed to hear that there is an alternative meaning for "cliff lift", as here, which features two such lifts. (Others, such as Babbacombe, are, of course funicular railways really.) Haven't looked to see if this term is covered elsewhere on WP, but their existence was news to me!.

EdJogg 01:18, 16 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

There's a cliff lift in Brighton too. DuncanHill 01:22, 16 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You're right, Dr Mark Hows also lists these on his funiculars index page (didn't scroll down far enough!)
See http://www.hows.org.uk/personal/rail/index.htm.
He lists nine in eight locations. These should be listed somewhere on WP, either as a subsection of elevator (there's a brief section for urban elevators, would go after that) (or ...?) as they are distinct stand-alone structures, and relatively uncommon. EdJogg 08:48, 16 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Stagecoach Group navbox

[edit]

Interested in helping me out with Template:StagecoachGroup at Talk:Stagecoach_Group? --Lee Stanley 21:52, 10 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Merely an attempt to help get people to the right place! A frequent search term on the website of the RHDR in Kent is "Hythe railway". The same search term in a Wikipedia search box does not direct to the RHDR article, but rather to the Hythe pier article. Not very surprising really; I grew up in Hythe (Kent) and have a lifetime's experience of the confusion caused by several places (in different counties) sharing that same place name. In the current context, all have railways and railway stations, making confusion all the more possible. However, don't worry about it; if you don't like the dab, I'm not bothered. Fact Templates on London Heathrow Airport Destinations

[edit]

I should point out that I was in fact not citing Wikiproject Airports as a reason for my removal of your request for citations but as a reason for correcting date formats, and by putting the ellipsis in you changed the meaning of my edit comment. My objection stems from the fact that it is quite simple, in my opinion, by going to various airline/airport websites and other travel-ish sites on the internet, to varify the information on here and that Wikiproject Airport members are constantly fact-checking the destinations as they are added. If you wish to add the template again I will not remove it, however I look it as being almost an insult to the work put in by members like me, who verify destinations as they are added. I suggested adding fact templates to individual destinations because I assumed there were a few you were very uncertain about, but it seems you have different motivations for your desire to add the templates. St Pancras Domestic?

[edit]

Chris,

St Pancras International in all probability refers to the whole station, domestic and Eurostar.

best, Sunil060902 (talk) 12:22, 19 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Chris,
I'm only going on what the signage says at the station itself. If ATOC see things otherwise then Occam's razor suggests they have it wrong. Why go to all that trouble to make incorrect signage, not only on the FCC (Thameslink) platforms, but all around the station? Not being a Midland fare-paying passenger, I haven't checked out the four Midland platforms from beyond the ticket barriers, but I presume the signage is similar to the Eurostar platforms, which are visible from the champagne bar/concourse sections of the station. best, Sunil060902 (talk) 12:45, 21 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Or from a slightly different angle, there seems to be no "on the ground" evidence for a station termed St Pancras Domestic. Sunil060902 (talk) 12:49, 21 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This is the last warning you will receive for your disruptive edits.
The next time you vandalize Wikipedia, you will be blocked from editing.

Administrators can block, but anybody can warn. Frtg66678 (talk) 15:59, 24 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This warning was bogus. Adding a reference and mentioning that a building is a Grade II listed building is not vandalism. It's clearly a constructive and valuable edit. I'm checking out Frtg66678's edits right now to see why he's giving people warnings. --Elkman (Elkspeak) 17:02, 24 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
