Cunninghamia & taxoboxes

Hi Chris - a line space at the end of the taxobox is WP:TOL policy, you'll find it on virtually all of the species, genus, family, etc pages; it is done to make the taxobox a discrete unit on the edit page and so minimise the risk of editors editing in the wrong place by accident (e.g. adding a paragraph of text above the {{Taxobox_end}} line) - MPF 11:43, 4 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Toccoa, Georgia

Well, there is no single definition of stub that everyone accepts, but Wikipedia:Find or fix a stub describes it thus: A stub is a very short article, generally of one paragraph or less. Most stubs fail to cover all but the most trivial subjects completely. I don't think the Rambot-generated city articles qualify as stubs. Yes, there is certainly much more that could be said about ALL of the 30,000 or so similar city articles--but marking them as stubs will simply clog the stub categories and make it more difficult to identify true stubs that barely even provide basic info. Unlike stubs that may have been created by an anon, may be uncategorized, may not even have any links to them, and may thus be difficult to locate again for anyone who might be able to improve them--the Rambot city articles are really not difficult to locate--some people complain that they are hard to avoid. Thus I don't really see any point to flagging Rambot-generated city article with the stub tag.

A stub tag is NOT the same as identifying a specific area for improvement within the article. There are Todo templates, which create lists of unfinished items on the talk page (and which to be honest I don't know how they work, but I'm sure if you ask around someone can point you in the right direction). Or if you are really keen on a particular subject like transportation, you can create a Wikiproject and identify some standard information that you want to include in a set of articles and identify the articles and maybe even recruit some assistance. As for your comment If we leave the article as it is after your change, I would expect a naive reader who doesn't know the area to assume Toccoa is inaccessible by road or air, for example -- that would have to be a very naive reader to make such an assumption. I don't think adding a generic stub tag would do much to help such a naive reader. I think there may even be some templates to mark specific sections as requiring further development. Such a note would be more useful that a generic stub tag.

fare zone x -> Zone x

Hi Chris. Good morning & hope you are well. I think I was trying to get an element of consistency. There are references to the zones on other tube pages and the text varies. I notice three of the zones have articles but they are inconsistently named: London Underground Zone 1, London Underground zone 2 and London Underground zone 6. There are also some redirects set up. Looking at at tube/rail map I see TfL use "Travelcard Zone" so I think changing to "Travelcard Zone x" for article names and all references to those articles would be the best thing all round. I see that you have been editing geographic articles. When you are doing this you might care to take time to wrap appropriate order of magnitude links around any population figures you see. Just as I did down in Birmingham, Alabama.

Some crashes I remember

• 24 October 1947 - Collision between two electric trains in dense fog near South Croydon - 31 dead and 63 injured or 32 dead and 183 injured. (My nearest railway station now. I was nowhere near there in 1947).
• Hixon rail crash (new article). I remember this because:
  • I was working for English Electric in Stafford at the time
  • Subsequently I met Sam Hallas whose page I have linked to
  • I have a client called Tom Hixson
• August 24 1999 - (Google search). Collision in the English Channel memorable for the names of the vessels - the Ever Decent not living up to its name by shattering the Norwegian Dream.

I switched the telly on once and saw the unmistakeable (to you and I) view from near Holme Moss looking down the valley toward Holmfirth. Then a Tour de France type peleton came into view! It was most disconcerting - I kept expecting Compo, Foggy and Clegg to appear over the wall and interact with the cyclists in some way.

Marylebone Station

er .. there are *two* such-named stations; one on the tube, one overground. Have reverted the edits deleting 'tube'. Although, like other locations, they are adjacent they are two separate properties, owned by different companies, with different histories. Cotswolds

I wrote 'returned to the ... of their former lord-lieutenancies' meaning the areas thereof, not the people (tenancy not tenant). If you think it needs clarification, please be my guest. I'm pretty sure that was how it was done (it's what was recommended) - and the Avon L/L (Sir John Wills) lost that title, and we very occasionally see the Glos guy down in South Glos. National Rail Line colours

Hi, Chris. Great to see you using this template. Just to point out quickly that I also have stn art lnk which was identical (until your perfectly OK mod). There is no reason for two templates - I did the '3lnk' version as a test, found it OK and copied it to the other. I was going to tidy things up. Reading Bridge

Chris, I've edited Reading Bridge to try out a possible box to tidy the upstream and downstream crossings - a la Railway lines next and previous station boxes, which now stretch from Paddington to Goring and beyond. Category main articles

There are special rules for the 'name' article of a category; it can (and should) still be in the base categories Chris, please can you provide a source for this guideline - I've checked the Wiki Category FAQs etc, but can't find this. San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park

Thanks for the note about the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park page. I didn't change the title because the system wouldn't let me -- it said I hadn't had an account long enough (which was certainly true, I had only had an account for about 15 minutes). So I'm still trying to figure the system out -- please bear with me. Referencing an old name is fine, and I probably should have explained it, rather than just cut it out. Sorry about that. I was, obviously, on something of a "fixing the name" mission. I think a fair rule of thumb, though, is that since the name changed over 25 years ago, any source which uses that name probably has a significant amount of other incorrect information, as well. I have tried to add a little institutional history around the name to put it in context. Hope that works OK. I also fine-tuned how the Association's relationship to the park is stated (we also have a very active association for our library, which I should probably put a link to at some point). UK railway stations and Template:UK-depot-stub

Hi, I notice you're removing the {{UK-depot-stub}} tags from certain articles. Does "depot" mean something different in the U.K. than what I'm accustomed to using it for in North America? I want to use a word in the stub tag that's synonymous with "station", only I can't use "station" because that's been taken by TV and radio station stubs. Any suggestions would be appreciated. If I may be allowed to butt in here, yes: "depot" (pronounced "depp-oh") does have a different meaning in UK English, where it can mean a servicing point (e.g. a locomotive depot) or a place where goods are loaded/unloaded (a goods or freight depot) but not a passenger station. I'd therefore suggest something like "UK-railstation" instead -- Picapica 10:19, 19 November 2005 (UTC)

--Hi, what was your intention of breaking apart the intro just to add the heading "overview"? I think its pretty clear that for most large city articles the intro serves as the overview. --OK I understand what you're trying to do, but this created a lot of "negative space" by creating a mismatch in the placement of the contents and the main info box. Other large cities tend to have fairly large intros like New York's, and I can't imagine anyone giving up from thinking that is the entire article. --Jleon 18:52, 13 May 2005 (UTC)

Newcastle DAB

Please be aware of the importance of disambiguation. I have been trawling 50+ articles correcting links to Newcastle. It is sometimes very difficult to determine to which of the many Newcastles is being referred. Although the context of the article made it obvious, this DABing exercise was the motivation for my change on John Lewis Partnership. I have had to DAB the John Lewis Newcastle article too, so please be careful when making changes. This task is tiresome enough as it is without the same articles appearing back on the 'to do' list. Section order

Regarding the order of sections question here, my memory was a tad fuzzy: it's actually See also/References/External links as recommended by the Manual of Style; Standardized appendices also touches on this topic. The reason you often see References at the end is that some editors prefer it to External links and use it instead (personally, I think they serve different purposes). If there is an External links section, it seems clear it belongs at the very end. For me, this is largely a matter of J. Random Reader's expectations. --Dhartung | Talk 15:53, 26 August 2005 (UTC)

River Thames

Chris, I've reverted all your 180px pics on the River Thames article back to 250px. I don't why you made them so small, they don't look right so tiny (I have a 1024 by 768 screen) and 250px is a "standard" now for pics. In my view your picture size almost forces the reader to open the big pic, which can be a very slow business! I guess they'd look even tinier on a higher res screen than mine. • Apologies! I had no idea the default pic size could be varied. However it's surely best if the pic size is set at, say, 250px in the picture code itself. Most readers will know nothing about Prefs, will see small pics and will not know they could do something about it. Huddersfield

Chris, I have reformatted the page, by moving the images around, to get a more stable layout, without overlapping boxes. Which I trust you will feel is more suitable. I've also removed the cleanup tag. Like you I also use firefox, though with some websites it does cause problems as the other user noted. I think the main problem is with having the large infobox at the top of the page. If you add together the pixel width of that plus the pixel width of images which may fall beside it, dependant on various screen res's there is bound to be a problem. Yes, going through them roughly in alphabetical order. I'm on the Bs already, so it's actually going quite well. The original reason was just to make sure that every parish was disambiguated properly (hence the name of the page), but I got rather distracted.

Two reasons. Firstly, so that it is easy to visually inspect the tables to make sure they are blue links. Secondly, so that if people do use such links, they work. Most of them are probably orphans, but you never know. I'd like to see dab links come up green or something, like redlinks for missing pages, which would make both those things redundant. But that doesn't seem likely to happen soon. If I wasn't doing this project I wouldn't be making them. Morwen - Talk 12:44, 6 December 2005 (UTC)

Keeping Wikipedia accurate and verifiable is very important, and as you might be aware there is currently a push to encourage editors to cite the sources they used when adding content. From what websites, books, or other places did you learn the information that you added to Caversham Lock? Would it be possible for you to mention them in the article?
