Public domain?
[edit]I would like to release my images into the public domain, but I don't know exactly what this means. It was my impression that this means the images can be used for anything, for any reason, no attribution necessary, etc. I just read the article Wikipedia:Granting work into the public domain which confuses me...should I be licensing my photographs using some Creative Commons license that does the same thing? I don't really understand the article. If someone could try to explain it I'd appreciate it.
Thanks. -ChrisKuehl (talk) 01:42, 21 June 2010 (UTC) {{helpme}}
- In non-legal speak;
- "Public Domain" means that anyone can do anything they like with it, period. No conditions.
- The "Creative Commons CC-BY-SA" licence means, anyone can use it, for anything, including commercial use, on condition that;
- They give the name of the creator (or company, whatever) - that's the BY part, the 'attribution', and
- They attach the same condition to any copies - "SA" - "Share-alike".
- If you upload to commons under the recommended CC-BY-SA licence, then your user name becomes the attribution (though you can change that if you like)
- All the text of Wikipedia is released under that licence; we 'recommend' it.
- Commons is happy with either PD or CC-BY-SA (and some other flavours).
- I personally suggest the 'recommended' option, CC-BY-SA, but if you wish for the simplest possible, then by all means choose PD.
- I would be more than happy to elaborate if required. For more help, you can either;
- Leave a message on my own talk page;
OR
- Use a {{helpme}} - please create a new section at the end of your own talk page, put {{helpme}}, and ask your question - remember to 'sign' your name by putting ~~~~ at the end;
OR
- Talk to us live, with this or this.
- The last of those is particularly useful - please try it; pop in now and say hello. Chzz ► 01:52, 21 June 2010 (UTC)
