List of countries by Persian-speaking population
[edit]The figures for certain countries in this article (which I created), include, in addition to the figure for "Persian" (defined as only Farsi-speaking Western Persian in the reference), also the figure for either "Tajik", "Luri", or in the case of Israel, several Judaeo-Persian groups (Bukharic, Dzhidi, Judaeo-Tat). Thus the figure for Iraq includes "Persian" and "Luri", the figure for Turkmenistan includes "Persian" and "Tajik", and so on. Irānshahr (talk) 01:08, 22 July 2013 (UTC)
- The difference here is that Tajik and Judeo-Persian groups (Bukharic, Dzhidi, Judaeo-Tat) are classified as part of the "Persian language family" whereas Luri is not classified as part of the Persian language family tree. Tajik and Judea-Persian groups are varieties of the Persian language, while Luri is a different language on its own. Equating Persian to Luri is like equating Kurdish to Persian, both Kurdish and Persian are classified as Western Iranian languages but Kurdish is a different language on its own.
