Proposed deletion of Nakia and his Southern Cousins

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Nakia and his Southern Cousins, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. Nakia and his Southern Cousins

Hi. It's nice that you want to contribute, so I'll try and give you a few pointers. I've written this assuming you so nothing about Wikipedia, so apologies if it tells you things you already know :-)

Firstly, notability.. just because a band exists, that doesn't imply that Wikipedia has to have an article about them - if it did, then we'd be swamped with articles about the latest band comprising a 15 year old and his best mates! Wikipedia has certain guidelines about criteria that musical groups have to meet in order to have an article - you can find those here: WP:BAND. As far as I can see, there's nothing concerning this group that currently meets the criteria - that doesn't mean that they won't meet the criteria in future when they've released some music, but Wikipedia isn't intended to promote bands that aren't yet notable. Although you've got some references (the austin360 and twangville reviews), both of these are borderline trivial - with the best will, neither can be considered a detailed review of the band or their music.

Secondly, verifiability - basically, if you make a statement in an article - for example, "He asked his friend Karla Manzur, formerly of Deep Edward and The Jellydots, to sing and help recruit someone else to compliment her style.", then you need to provide references which can prove this is true, and not just something you made up, or overheard. Again, Wikipedia has a whole series of guidelines on this - you should have a look at WP:Verifiability. It may be that this is stated in one of the sources you quoted, so you should learn about in-line citation - the way some articles have little numbers after statements that link to sources quoted. You've added sources, but one of them is a web-site by the main artist, so can't be considered 'independent' - they could say they on their web page that they were the 10th most famous musician in the world, but that wouldn't make it true!...the same thing goes for myspace - they're written by individuals concerned with the subject so can't be considered independent or reliable. What you need are things like reviews from local (or preferably national) papers, music journals etc.

Thirdly, you seem to imply that the group is notable partly due to their association with Nakia, but since this musician doesn't have an article of their own yet, there's no notability to infer - if the musician is non-notable, then the band can't claim notability based on this.

The bottom line, as I see it, is that if you could get some decent independent reviews, then you could possibly claim notability based on those. Otherwise, I suspect you may have to wait until they either :

• Get a charting position in a major chart
• Release two or more albums for a major label, or..
• Nakia becomes famous

As you mention yourself, it may be worth combining Nakia and the group into one article for the moment - but you'll still need to assert sufficient notability for Nakia - it still has to meet the above conditions.

I've just reviewed the talk page - you say that Nakia has put out his independent works of his own, and his music has been reviewed by national publications such as Performing Songwriter Magazine and Singer & Musician Magazine. His songs have been in rotation on XM radio and other FM stations around the country. - all this would mean he would probably be considered notable for an article of his own, and the band could probably be included as part of that article. Basically, you need to find links to any websites containing this information - such as the radio station or the magazine. If the magazines aren't online, you need to find out things like which edition they were in, what year, what pages etc - I can give you a hand with the formatting if you can find the material. OK - in relation to what you were saying about the magazines. Here's what I have for you: Performing Songwriter Jan/Feb 2008 Vol. 15 - Issue 107. I couldn't find any online version of their magazine, but I did find this link to buy it: http://performingsongwriter.com/pages/shop/issues_back.cfm and I have the full text of the review if you need that as well. Singer & Musician Magazine No. 48 December 2007. They too don't have an online version available that I can find at their site: http://ilivetoplay.net/ but it does mention they are going through a redesign. Nakia was on the cover of Austin's L Style/G Style Magazine in September. I just read in a discussion forum that Nakia will be featured in Austin Monthly as their "On The Cusp" artist for January and that issue comes out next week. Nakia has had supporting roles in theatrical productions of Rocky Horror Show and The Music Man, but I am still searching for any verifiable information on these other than his site. He has appeared in 1 national TV commercial for SBC Yahoo, a nation print campaign for SBC Yahoo, and was a supporting actor in the movie Lonestar Blues which has not been released and I also can't find any info on it. He was an uncredited "Rhode Island Senator" in Mike Judge's Idiocracy.

Before beginning his solo career, Nakia was also a member of Miles Zuniga's (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fastball_(band)) band, The Small Stars. The band was "character driven" and each member had an "alter-ego." Nakia performed under the name "Vic Odin" and played the part of the band's nasty British manager. The band's first release featured a song about the character with Nakia on lead vocals called, "I Turn Music Into Money" which was popular regionally.

I can't think of anything else right now. I know that Nakia's new album, Water To Wine, comes out in April of 2009 but is already leaking digitally to some outlets such as this one: http://www.digstation.com/AlbumDetails.aspx?albumid=ALB000024143 and that he is now listing Kim Fowler (Nickel Creek, Dolly Parton) out of Nashville, TN as his publicist. The new record reportedly features songs by some top songwriters in the business such as Monte Warden (Desperately by George Strait) and Jon Randall (Whiskey Lullaby by Brad Paisley).

Well, I've had a scan through what you provided, and it would seem that he/they do meet the basic notability criteria. However - I don't think you'd really be justified in having two articles - at least for the moment - you should stick to either one about Nakia with a subsection about the group, or one about the group with a subsection on Nakia as a solo artist. Personally, I'd go for the former as the group seems to be an "offshoot" of the musician and wouldn't exist without him, rather than the other way around. What I'd suggest as the first step is to contact an administrator (any one will do) and ask if they can restore the original article as a subpage off your user page - you can then use this as a basis for the article. You could rewrite it from scratch if you want, but it might be easier this way. Let me know when you've got to this stage and I'll try and pitch in with any help I can provide. Hi again. Contacting an admin is easy - you simply create an article saying something extremely rude about someone and wait... :-) No, seriously, there are lots of ways - if you want to ask the Administrator group as a whole, add a message to the Administrators' noticeboard talk page, or if you want to contact a specific admin, then just leave a message on their talk page. Any of them can restore the article for you - the admin who originally deleted the Nakia and his Southern Cousins article was "Mr.Z-man", so you can leave a message on his talk page here. You can go either route - but if you contact a specific admin, just remember you may have to wait for them to come online, assuming they're not on holiday etc. - the noticeboard would probably get you a faster response (no guarantees though !). Just remember to be polite, and explain why you want the previous article recovered (i.e. you'd like the article back as a template for the new version, you intend to improve the article and have references/sources which indicate he/they pass the notability/verifiability criteria etc.) - you don't need to write an essay - just a couple of lines will do :-) Of course, all this assumes that you want the original article back - you can create a new one from scratch if you want without going through all this.
