Chaosdruid,

Artle: User:Adamdaley/biographies

I appreciate what you've done earlier. I can see the edit you made with what I was trying to sort out. If there is anything I can do in return ask on my Discussion page. Adamdaley (talk) 03:53, 2 March 2011 (UTC)

Re: my request for help

They were put up today for regular deletion. The problem is technical: I thought I followed the procedure, but when I was done, the articles did not get transcluded to the deletion log. Perhaps there is a time lag and they will show up later? Thanks, --Ravpapa (talk) 07:34, 2 March 2011 (UTC)

Because I have noticed you commenting at the current RfC regarding Pending Changes, I wanted to invite you to the IRC channel for pending changes. If you are not customarily logged into the IRC, use this link. This under used resource can allow real time discussion at this particularly timely venture of the trial known as Pending Changes. Even if nothing can come from debating points there, at least this invitation is delivered with the best of intentions and good faith expectations. Kind regards. My76Strat 08:36, 2 March 2011 (UTC)

Lists of robots

Hi.

Thank you for usefull informations on my talk page :)

Now I need your opinion - I would like to create lists of robots (here is prototype: List of hexapod robots).

Images look nice, but when there will many robots the page might get very long. The solution might be to divide such lists when they get bigger (ex. spiders, cockroaches, insects, etc.).

Isn't this list too detailed (too many columns), or would you rather add even more informations to it?

And what you think about mentioning different versions of specific robot, ex. LAURON I, LAURON II, LAURON III, LAURON IV - should I just put LAURON? But in this case we are loosing ability to easy compare such robots - after all they are part of robotic history :-)

What do you think?

SC-42 deletion

I got your note. Yes, "keep just in case." Just in case of what I am not sure; in case there actually people interested in the world in what I'm putting on Wikipedia? There's a thought! I'm trying to fill in the blanks in Wikipedia, and doing so harms no one, and yet I've got the Wikipedia equivalent of the neighborhood association telling me I can't do what I'm doing and they're going to delete my work, even though my work is good work, hurts no one, and benefits many people trying to look stuff up. Wikipedia is supposed to be about collaborative building of the Web, not about deleting what people have built. And who says who gets to decide, providing there is no malfeasance or inaccuracy? Yours truly is getting pretty disillusioned about Wikipedia. Mdnavman (talk) 23:34, 3 March 2011 (UTC)mdnavman

Chesapeake

Hi Chaosdruid. I couldn't remember where we had that conversation about the Chesapeake so I thought I would drop a line here. I addressed a couple of your concerns from the article talk page and made note of what I did. I also did another round of copy edits:

  • I added serial commas throughout, as the author had a mixture of both styles
  • Other punctiation fixes were done (mostly the dreaded commas)
  • I re-worded some awkward and/or unclear sentences
  • Some sentences were split in two as they were too long. If the second part of a sentence introduces a new idea, that's the place to make the split.
  • I added locations on a couple of the cites using info from Worldcat.org
  • Dab solver showed no links to disambiguation pages
  • One dead link was found and marked
  • Dashes and empty spaces were fixed using two scripts

I am pretty sure we are done here but whether it's enough for FA is still an open question. I will continue to watch-list and we will see what happens. Thank you for tackling this article. --Diannaa (Talk) 18:21, 5 March 2011 (UTC)

Re: Hey

Hey again, and again, sorry for my last comment. Because an article about the office itself could never evolve into more than a stub, or at least, a start-class article at best + I need the text to nominate the list to FL. If I would have had enough information I would have done it. But again, I only reference articles with English literature, for all I know Russian literature may be filled with info regarding the office of First Deputy. --TIAYN (talk) 22:05, 5 March 2011 (UTC)

The majority of those sources talk about the First Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation + only one of the source talk about the post and it's duties the other sources just says a person was demoted or appointed to the First Deputyship without actually telling the reader what a First Deputy does. So no there is still not going to be any separate article and yes, I've searched through the whole Google Books Archive and I've not been able to find any valuable info to create a stand alone article. --TIAYN (talk) 22:53, 5 March 2011 (UTC)
It's not enough to create a seperate article, and the "Detail on the powers" ref is about the First Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation and not the Soviet First Deputy. There's no point in creating a stub-article, It won't be usefull and it will never feel entirely complete. That's the main reason for the merger of the main article and the list . --TIAYN (talk) 07:18, 6 March 2011 (UTC)
Okay, I have a plan, let's both of us try to locate some sources which talks about the office in details; e.g. duties, functions and responsibilities and create a section for it at the Council of Ministers page (which I've been working on lately). If we are able to locate enough sources, and create a large enough text, we can create a separate article. Those that sound okay with you? --TIAYN (talk) 08:35, 6 March 2011 (UTC)

UK aircraft registrations

Believe it or not, my speciality is wind and watermills. I have interests across a number of subjects including, but not limited to, railways, civil aviation, merchant ships, motorsport, local history - particularly that relating to Kent. I like to think I can bash out an article on pretty much any subject if there are sources available to do so.

In answer to your query re the K- registrations, these were a temporary series created in 1919 for new aircraft. The series ran from K-100 to K-175 before is was discontinued on the introduction of the G-E series in May 1919. K-126 became G-EAFO, it was written off in an accident of 3 September 1925. Lympne Airport

RAF Lympne has now been split from Lympne Airport, and the latter article culled of much military material relating to squadrons based there etc, but events such as change of status left in. Mjroots (talk) 08:56, 9 March 2011 (UTC)

I was always taught that a comma denoted where a pause was needed, usually to enable the speaker to take a breath. Hence the use of a comma after a date. The two sentences re the HP.42 could be rewritten completely, with perhaps extra info added to the latter sentence. Mjroots (talk) 15:38, 11 March 2011 (UTC)
Punctuation Nazi? No! I appreciate the work you've put in on the article. You may be surprized to learn that I hope this can get to FA in due course. GA is hopefully the first step of this. Ok, we've got a minor difference of opinion over this, but that ain't going to spoil things. I've asked Jezhotwells to give the article another look over and raise any new issues so that they can be addressed. Mjroots (talk) 15:57, 11 March 2011 (UTC)

Guild of Copy Editors March 2011 backlog elimination drive

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors March 2011 Backlog elimination drive! Here is your mid-drive newsletter.

Participation
GOCE March 2011 backlog elimination drive progress graphs

So far, 79 people have signed up for this drive. Of these, 64 have participated. Interest is high due to a link to our event from the Watchlist page, and many new and first-time copy editors have joined us for the drive. If you signed up for the drive but haven't participated yet, it's not too late! Try to copy edit at least a few articles. Remember, if you have rollover words from the last drive, you will lose them if you do not participate in this drive. If you haven't signed up for the drive yet, you can sign up now. Many thanks to those editors who have been helping out at the Requests page. We have assisted in the promotion of seven articles to Good article status so far this month.

Progress report

We have already achieved our target of reducing the overall backlog by 10%; however, we have more work to do with the 2009 backlog. We have almost eliminated May 2009 and we only have some 700 articles left from 2009. It is excellent progress, so let's concentrate our fire power on the remaining months from 2009. Thank you for participating in the March 2011 drive. We anticipate it will be another big success!

Funny. I only hit that article cos it stood out as the one article left for the month, but no copyedit tag when you went there. Is that a known problem with the multi-issue tag? I was about to report it at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors/Backlog elimination drives/March 2011, so hopefully someone can get it fixed. --jjron (talk) 13:05, 16 March 2011 (UTC)

OK, reported as you suggested. Sounded like you were going to try the same thing? Yeah, funny we both hit it at the same time, it had been 2.5 days since Nytc claimed to remove the copyedit tag (checking the diff I don't think he did), and Wi2g actually reported on the 5th March "(not tagged for copy edit)". Between them it appears both Anaxial and Wkharrisjr also did copyedits on it (and perhaps others)! Wonder if they're all counting it in their word counts. Lol. --jjron (talk) 13:51, 16 March 2011 (UTC)

Hi, I notice you started this list but seem to have abandoned it. Rather than nominating it for deletion as an abandoned article, I have userfied it to User:Chaosdruid/List of Androids so you can work on it, and move it to the main article space when ready. Stifle (talk) 17:31, 26 March 2011 (UTC)

It is a list of Androids and their articles. There are no sources as, as far as I can see from Wikipedia:Manual of Style (stand-alone lists), there do not need to be any as this is a list more akin to an index of articles. The articles themselves are very well sourced and verified.
Can you please suggest exactly what sources you think need to be included? Chaosdruid (talk) 22:03, 26 March 2011 (UTC)

East Slavic founders of Kievan Rus

Please get a source before you insert claims that East Slavic tribes founded Kievan Rus. It's not even mentioned as a theory in the main article so i see no reason for putting it as a fact in the summary. I've adressed this at the talk page several times but you dont seem to respond. Its hard to get WP:BRD then. Alphasinus (talk) 22:08, 26 March 2011 (UTC)

"Slavic tribes occupied central and eastern Ukraine in the sixth century A.D. and played an important role in the establishment of Kyiv. Kievan Rus Prince Volodymyr converted the Kievan nobility and most of the population to Christianity in 988. Situated on lucrative trade routes, Kyiv quickly prospered as the center of the powerful state of Kievan Rus. In the 11th century, Kievan Rus was, geographically, the largest state in Europe. Conflict among the feudal lords led to decline in the 12th century. Mongol raiders razed Kyiv in the 13th century." from [2] --Taivo (talk) 22:42, 26 March 2011 (UTC)

The four tribes who had been forced to pay tribute to the Varangians — Chuds, Slavs, Merians, and Krivichs drove the Varangians back beyond the sea, refused to pay them further tribute, and set out to govern themselves. But there was no law among them, and tribe rose against tribe. Discord thus ensued among them, and they began to war one against the other. They said to themselves, "Let us seek a prince who may rule over us, and judge us according to custom". Thus they went overseas to the Varangians, to the Rus. These particular Varangians were known as Rus, just as some are called Swedes, and others Normans and Angles, and still others Gutes, for they were thus named. The Chuds, the Slavs, the Krivichs and the Veps then said to the Rus, "Our land is great and rich, but there is no order in it. Come reign as princes, rule over us". Three brothers, with their kinfolk, were selected. They brought with them all the Rus and migrated.

I would be careful using the United States government as a source since they would probably leave out information that could be of potential poltical dispute. As far as i know, the Varangian role in the founding of Kievan Rus is pretty controversial in the East Slavic countries. Alphasinus (talk) 00:33, 27 March 2011 (UTC)

Actually, the Primary Chronicle is not a reliable source since it is a primary document, not a secondary source. Thus, while the US government document isn't the best source, it is considered a tertiary source, based on secondary sources. Thus, the Wikipedia hierarchy for quality of sources is 1) secondary source (preferably scholarly), 2) tertiary source (based on secondary sources), 3) primary source. The point is that the role of the non-Slavic Varangians is debatable. While they were involved, their relative level of involvement is in dispute. While you caution about the use of a government document, you use one as well--the Primary Chronicle is, in essence, the official propaganda of the Kievan regime. To quote the Wikipedia entry on the Primary Chronicle: "Nestor worked at the court of Sviatopolk II of Kiev and probably shared his pro-Scandinavian policies." So you choose your propaganda. Find a scholarly source. --Taivo (talk) 02:48, 27 March 2011 (UTC)
You need to read WP:RS to learn that all these things are primary sources and are thus the least reliable sources for use in Wikipedia. Using primary sources to make your arguments in Wikipedia is equivalent to original research and is frowned upon unless there are absolutely no scholarly sources for your information (which is not the case here). No one denies that there was some Varangian influence, but the secondary scholarly sources disagree over the level of that involvement. Stating categorically that the Kievan Rus were Varangians is not supported by scholarship in the field. --Taivo (talk) 10:10, 28 March 2011 (UTC)

Some sources

Is this propaganda as well?

Greek

When the Varangians first appeared in Constantinople (Paphlagonian expedition of the Rus, Siege of Constantinople (860)), the Byzantines seem to have perceived the Rhos (Greek: Ῥώς) as a different people from the Slavs. At least they are never said to be part of the Slavic race. Characteristically, pseudo-Symeon Magister refers to the Rhos as Δρομΐται, a word related to the Greek word meaning "a run", suggesting the mobility of their movement by waterways.

Frankish

The Annals are notable, among other things, for containing one of the earliest written references to a group of Vikings who called themselves Rhos, that is the Rus' or early-Russian people. According to the Annals, these had visited Constantinople about the year 838. Fearful of returning home through the steppes, which would have left them vulnerable to attack by the Magyars, the Rhos set out with a Byzantine embassy hoping to obtain the Franks' assent for traveling via Germany. At Ingelheim royal residence, near Mainz, they were questioned by Frankish Emperor Louis the Pious and informed him that their leader was known as chacanus (with no doubt the Latin form for "Khagan" sometimes accordingly emended to chaganus, although formerly held to be a deformation of Scandinavian proper name Håkan)[2]

Arab

The Arab diplomat and traveller, Ahmad ibn Fadlan, who visited Volga Bulgaria in 922, described the Rus (Rusiyyah)

I have seen the Rus as they came on their merchant journeys and encamped by the Itil. I have never seen more perfect physical specimens, tall as date palms, blond and ruddy; they wear neither tunics nor caftans, but the men wear a garment which covers one side of the body and leaves a hand free. Each man has an axe, a sword, and a knife, and keeps each by him at all times. The swords are broad and grooved, of Frankish sort. Each woman wears on either breast a box of iron, silver, copper, or gold; the value of the box indicates the wealth of the husband. Each box has a ring from which depends a knife. The women wear neck-rings of gold and silver. Their most prized ornaments are green glass beads. They string them as necklaces for their women.

— Gwyn Jones, A History of the Vikings[3]

Persian

Persian traveler Ibn Rustah who allegedly visited Novgorod (or Tmutarakan, according to George Vernadsky) and described how the Rus' exploited the Slavs.

As for the Rus, they live on an island ... that takes three days to walk round and is covered with thick undergrowth and forests; it is most unhealthy.... They harry the Slavs, using ships to reach them; they carry them off as slaves and…sell them. They have no fields but simply live on what they get from the Slav's lands.... When a son is born, the father will go up to the newborn baby, sword in hand; throwing it down, he says, "I shall not leave you with any property: You have only what you can provide with this weapon."

For example of WP:WikiProject_Intelligence/Assessment similarly like a main page. I am happy with the templates for members and assessment for articles. Feedback would be appreciated. I would like the following help if anyone isn't busy to help me with:

Guild of Copy Editors March 2011 backlog elimination drive report

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors March 2011 Backlog elimination drive. Thank you for participating in the March 2011 drive! This newsletter summarizes the March drive and other recent events.

Participation
GOCE March 2011 backlog elimination drive progress graphs

There were 99 signups for the drive; of these, 70 participated. Interest was high mainly due to a link to our event from the Watchlist page. We had a record-breaking 84 articles listed on the Requests page in March; 11 of these have been promoted to Good article status so far. Several of our recent efforts have received Featured Article status as well, and the GOCE is becoming a solid resource for the Wikipedia community. Many thanks to editors who have been helping out at the Requests page and by copy editing articles from the backlog.

Progress report

Remarkable progress was made in reducing the backlog this month, as we now have fewer than 500 articles remaining from 2009. We are well under the 4,000-article mark for the total number remaining in the queue. Since our backlog drives began in May 2010 with 8,323 articles, we have cleared more than 53% of the backlog. A complete list of results and barnstars awarded can be found here. Barnstars will be distributed over the next week. If you enjoyed participating in our event, you may also like to join the Wikification drives, which are held on alternate months to our drives. Their April drive has started.

New coodinators

On March 21, SMasters appointed Chaosdruid (talk) and Torchiest (talk) as Guild coordinators to serve in place of The Utahraptor, who recently stepped down. Please feel free to contact any coordinator if you have any questions or need assistance.

Help with barnstars

Hi, Chaosdruid. I just saw your note and I am glad to hear you will be able to spend more time on-wiki again! I missed chatting with you. I was wondering if you would have time to help hand out the barnstars from the March drive? With five people potentially able to help, we could have them all handed out really quickly! If you are interested, your task would be to send to people with usernames starting with the letters S through Z (about ten persons). The document that gives barnstar results is here. Please let me know if you will not have time, and I will make other arrangements. Thanks. --Diannaa (Talk) 03:54, 3 April 2011 (UTC)

This Leaderboard Barnstar is awarded to Chaosdruid for copy editing 4 articles of 5,000 words or more during the WP:GOCE March 2011 Backlog elimination drive. Thank you very much. --Diannaa (Talk) 04:50, 3 April 2011 (UTC)
The 10k Copy Edit Barnstar
This special 10K barnstar is awarded to Chaosdruid for courageously copy editing the article Lympne Airport during the March GOCE copy edit drive. Way to go! --Diannaa (Talk) 04:50, 3 April 2011 (UTC)

John Astley

I fixed the cite problem, but I don't think the block quote I deleted is as strong as the ones recently added. It seemed a weak quote re his talent, et cetera, that other contemporary stated much more strongly and colorfully.Kitchawan (talk) 17:52, 7 April 2011 (UTC)

May drive

Hey, I started a rough draft for the next drive page. I made some changes with regard to 2009 article awards, but I figure we should all discuss it a little more to make sure the changes are okay. Let me know what you think. Thanks. Torchiest talkedits 20:26, 12 April 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for the note. I think Diannaa fixed most of the problems, but feel free to do any other fixes that are needed. Torchiest talkedits 21:28, 12 April 2011 (UTC)

Article rescue: Rexer survey

Hello. I am new to Wikipedia and would like to dispute the notability tag added by User:Melcombe to the Rexer's Annual Data Miner Survey article. Can you help? Thanks. --Luke145 (talk) 20:29, 22 April 2011 (UTC)

Hello Chaosdruid, I wanted to know if you could copyedit this 'article.' Right now it is just a rough draft after everything is edited and finished it will be put into the El Salvador national football team article. I know that it's in the WP:GOCE; I just wanted to be noticed since I posted it 2 days ago or so. Thanks. Jaime070996 20:55, 25 April 2011 (UTC)

Over There (Fringe) PR

Greetings! I am currently looking for reviewers to look over an article I hope to propose as a FAC: Over There (Fringe). As I noticed you are a Fringe fan and are an experienced editor, I thought I might interest you in looking over the article and leaving some comments at the peer review when you get a chance. Thank you so much! Much appreciated, Ruby2010 comment! 23:11, 25 April 2011 (UTC)

Leontovych

Hey, I've significantly expanded the article on Mykola Leontovych over the past few months. Thought (maybe more of "hoped") you might be interested in expanding, correcting it, or editing in general to help bring it to good, or even featured status. :-)

Hi Chaosdruid. Brad has just initiated the FA process on USS Chesapeake (1799). Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/USS Chesapeake (1799)/archive1. It will be interesting to see how well we did. Cheers, --Diannaa (Talk) 00:34, 29 April 2011 (UTC)

Okay, I'll take a shot at copy editing that article in the new few days, before the May drive starts. Thanks for the heads up. Torchiest talkedits 13:21, 28 April 2011 (UTC)

Missed it

Hi Chaos,

Saw your comments on Diannaa's & Mayhem's pages, looks like you missed this discussion. Cheers, --jjron (talk) 05:10, 2 May 2011 (UTC)

Um, I don't think so... :) --jjron (talk) 14:02, 2 May 2011 (UTC)
I am afraid you are mistaken, as my comment was 03:07 and Diannaa's at 03:10 - I have posted the diffs on your talk page for clarity. Chaosdruid (talk) 14:30, 2 May 2011 (UTC)
As I pointed out above, my comment was some 14hrs before either of them (from the history). See my talkpage for details. Cheers, --jjron (talk) 11:14, 3 May 2011 (UTC)
Yes, thankfully that is sorted. He only caught my attention because he suddenly appeared on the leaderboard with something like 12,000 words in the time I'd only done a few hundred words. That sort of thing kind of jumps out as worth checking up on.
Hmm, when I click that link, it goes straight to my post on Mayhem's page, not to Diannaa's post, having said which, her post is directly attached to mine. Sometimes those 'subpage' links don't always seem to land in the same spot, so who knows. Anyway, onwards ... --jjron (talk) 14:10, 3 May 2011 (UTC)
