Template help
[edit]Hi. I read your message, and what I think you're looking for is something to imitate the Main Page's "Today's featured article" setup. I'm not familiar with the setup for that (beyond that the Main Page merely displays sections made in advance for each day automatically), but I don't think that standard template syntax can truncate text well, if at all - I think that each day's featured article setup is made manually or semi-manually (preformatting the text with a template, also see the history of the December 26 2006 entry), so I'm afraid the most I can do is explain the setup for the main page:
The Main Page uses template transclusion to display templates for each day automatically using date/time magic words to automatically update the day's featured content in the syntax
{{Wikipedia:Today's featured article/{{CURRENTMONTHNAME}} {{CURRENTDAY}}, {{CURRENTYEAR}}}}
which the system interprets (as of when you read this) as
{{Wikipedia:Today's featured article/November 14, 2024}}
and which then transcludes the page at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/November 14, 2024.
The code for the pretty boxes is CSS, in which language I am illiterate - I know only just enough to be able to create templates well on Wikipedia. If you're trying to copy/imitate the Main Page, you can always view the source of the Main Page. I hope what I've given helps, but I recommend that you ask elsewhere about the way that the truncated introduction about a featured article is created. I hope this helps, Nihiltres 19:11, 26 December 2006 (UTC)
- I'm afraid I don't know much more that I can tell you about truncating a page nicely - I don't know enough about the code (HTML/PHP) required to do it automatically. I recommend you ask elsewhere. Nihiltres 16:47, 27 December 2006 (UTC)
