Hi Caponer; I'm afraid I've had to remove the above article from your submission page. There was no work on this article this year prior to the nomination, and we've been enforcing the rules pretty strictly this year. Please don't take this as a criticism of your work. WikiCup 2014 February newsletter
And so ends the most competitive first round we have ever seen, with 38 points required to qualify for round 2. Last year, 19 points secured a place; before that, 11 (2012) or 8 (2011) were enough. This is both a blessing and a curse. While it shows the vigourous good health of the competition, it also means that we have already lost many worthy competitors. Our top three scorers were:
- Godot13 (submissions), a WikiCup newcomer whose high-quality scans of rare banknotes represent an unusual, interesting and valuable contribution to Wikipedia. Most of Godot's points this round have come from a large set of pictures used in Treasury Note (1890–91).
- Adam Cuerden (submissions), a WikiCup veteran and a finalist last year, Adam is also a featured picture specialist, focusing on the restoration of historical images. This month's promotions have included a carefully restored set of artist William Russell Flint's work.
- WikiRedactor (submissions), another WikiCup newcomer. WikiRedactor has claimed points for good article reviews and good articles relating to pop music, many of which were awarded bonus points. Articles include Sky Ferreira, Hannah Montana 2: Meet Miley Cyrus and "Wrecking Ball" (Miley Cyrus song).
Other competitors of note include:
- Hahc21 (submissions), who helped take Thirty Flights of Loving through good article candidates and featured article candidates, claiming the first first featured article of the competition.
- Prism (submissions), who claimed the first featured list of the competition with Natalia Kills discography.
- Cwmhiraeth (submissions), who takes the title of the contributor awarded the highest bonus point multiplier (resulting in the highest scoring article) of the competition so far. Her high-importance salamander, now a good article, scored 108 points.
After such a competitive first round, expect the second round to also be fiercely fought. Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 1 but before the start of round 2 can be claimed in round 2, but please do not update your submission page until March (UTC). Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points equally.
If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to help keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Hi, any chance you can review this one for me at GA Conrad I of Salzburg? Happy to review one of yours if you let me know :-).♦ Dr. Blofeld 10:43, 4 March 2014 (UTC)
- Dr. Blofeld, it would be my pleasure and a privilege to review Conrad I of Salzburg. This would be my first GAR, so if that would be alright with you, I'd like the opportunity to conduct this review. As for reviewing one of my GA nominations--they have all been snatched up by a single user who hasn't begun to review any of them. If you see one of my GA nominations that you'd like to review, I'm not sure what the protocol is for taking it on when an inactive user has claimed it. Let me know! -- Caponer (talk) 13:34, 4 March 2014 (UTC)

diverse topics
Thank you, unusual you, for quality articles, lists and categories on diverse topics, including education, music, (West)-Virginia, historic people such as Alexander White (Virginia), for views and reviews, - repeating: you are an awesome Wikipedian (27 August 2010)!
- Gerda Arendt, thank you tremendously for this very pleasant surprise and honor! As you can see, I've had a wide array of interests here on Wikipeida. I'm also elated that you were able to work in an "Unusual You" reference! I've been a big fan of your contributions on Wikipedia, and I thank you for all you do to make Wikipedia a quality place in which to connect and share! -- Caponer (talk) 12:19, 6 March 2014 (UTC)
DYK for Huntington Junior College
On 6 March 2014, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Huntington Junior College, which you recently created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that Huntington Junior College occupies a former Carnegie library building (pictured) and offers the only judicial reporting educational program in West Virginia? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Huntington Junior College. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, live views, daily totals), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page. |

Hi, I was going to ask Seabbuck but I see he's already bogged down with reviewing your articles! This one should be a fairly easy one to review if you're interested. There's quite a few articles written by ACP and Aymatth which I'll be editing and getting up to GA status over the next few weeks/months as I think a lot of them are clearly good material. Let me know when you want me to review one of yours!♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:03, 10 March 2014 (UTC)
- Dr. Blofeld, it would be a pleasure to review this article! Count me in. I will be able to complete in a few days time. I look forward to reviewing this and the others completed by yourself, ACP, and Aymatth. Thank you for the heads up! I'll keep you posted as to when I'll have another article ready for review! Thanks again! -- Caponer (talk) 20:11, 10 March 2014 (UTC)

Welcome back! Good luck with the lists! Mogadishu doesn't seem to have been snapped up yet, you're welcome to review it if it isn't a problem for you! Midday did most of the writing, I just cleaned it up and added a landmarks section and some refinements! ♦ Dr. Blofeld 15:07, 17 March 2014 (UTC)

I appreciate your guidance and suggestions--as you always know just the right touches to get an article up to GA quality! Thanks again! -- Caponer (talk) 23:25, 31 March 2014 (UTC)
A rather cool West Virginian
Hey- Keeping in tune with all things West Virginia, I believe there s a raer important one, we could both do and/or learn about. His name was Jenkin B. Jones, the namesake of Jenkinjones, West Virginia....So whats the deal? He was one of the founders of the Pocahontas Fuel Company which pretty much was the Pocahontas Coalfield. His influence was felt in 3 counties, in 2 states, the stock cert from 1907, in the article I have updated for the coal field was for him. His son sold it after his death. His sons mansion, is of course on the NRHP..let me know what you think.Coal town guy (talk) 21:00, 10 March 2014 (UTC)
- Coal town guy, that sounds like an excellent idea! I'd be happy to review or provide guidance as necessary. -- Caponer (talk) 21:41, 10 March 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for the recommendation
My copy of A Visual Dictionary of Architecture arrived a few days ago. Judging by my initial leafings-through, it's exactly the sort of thing I was looking for. Many thanks for the recommendation! Ammodramus (talk) 12:52, 13 March 2014 (UTC)

St. Leonard's redux
Thanks once again for expending the time and effort to do a nice thorough GA review of St. Leonard Catholic Church (Madison, Nebraska), and thanks for the kind words about it. It's a better article for your having gone through it. Hope you're continuing your work in Hampshire County; you're setting a great example, and I wish I were accomplishing half as much with Madison County. Ammodramus (talk) 02:09, 18 March 2014 (UTC)
- And many thanks for the barnstar, as well. Ammodramus (talk) 02:15, 18 March 2014 (UTC)
- Thank you in turn for your kind words, Ammodramus! As I stated in the GA review, I hope you didn't take my few comments and suggestions as me conducting some sort of quickie review. The article easily met the criteria, and I was grasping at straws to find components that needed fixing or greater elaboration. You certainly have a knack for this trade craft, which doesn't leave a reviewer much room for critique! As for Hampshire County, I'm working on improving existing articles before continuing to draft new ones! Here's hoping I somehow find more time to dedicate to Hampshire County content creation, and Madison County content review! Great job, sir! -- Caponer (talk) 02:20, 18 March 2014 (UTC)
- BTW Ammodramus, have you considered adding Saint Leonard Catholic Church (Madison, Nebraska) to DYK now that it has achieved GA status? -- Caponer (talk) 02:24, 18 March 2014 (UTC)
- I really don't have that much to do with DYK; I never come into WP via the main page, and I wasn't even aware of the existence of DYK until somebody nominated one of my articles. If I could come up with something quirky or unusual, I might try to write it up for DYK, but there's really nothing I can think of for St. Leonard's. Also, if I nominated articles for DYK, I'd have to do reviews of other people's nominations... Better I should keep working on GA reviews, since I'm benefitting from the work of other GA reviewers (like you!). Ammodramus (talk) 02:30, 18 March 2014 (UTC)
- Ammodramus, I've taken the liberty of starting a draft DYK nomination at Template:Did you know nominations/Saint Leonard Catholic Church (Madison, Nebraska). This hasn't been posted for DYK review, but I wanted you to take a look at this before and provide your blessing before I post. -- Caponer (talk) 03:06, 18 March 2014 (UTC)
- Looks OK to me—though I'll re-emphasize that I really don't know much about the process. Ammodramus (talk) 03:17, 18 March 2014 (UTC)
- Ammodramus, I've never been very good at writing really catchy hooks, despite somehow getting 72 DYK hooks passed! It's a rather simple process. You create your article's nomination subpage at Template talk:Did you know, and once you've completed filling out all the required fields, you post your subpage link at Template talk:Did you know. (I usually try to have my QPQ review completed before this page). If the nominee article is your own, you must of course complete a QPQ review, but if it is not, a QPQ review is not necessary. (I usually go ahead and review another article anyway). Once your article has been reviewed and approved by another editor, its hook is automatically moved to Template:Did you know/Queue where it awaits its appearance on the front page! I am looking forward to Old Baldy's DYK appearance! -- Caponer (talk) 03:27, 18 March 2014 (UTC)
- I'm somewhat on the fence about whether Old Baldy is too brief to be GA material. Did you think that it might be? Having done a few reviews and seen how much work they can be, I'm loath to nominate something unless I'm tolerably sure that it'll pass without too much more work. Although, now that I think of it, I passed Kalyanasundara, which was shorter still... Ammodramus (talk) 11:59, 18 March 2014 (UTC)
- Ammodramus, Old Baldy meets much of the criteria for Good Article status. I would recommend expanding the lead to include more content from the history and promotion/protection sections. GA criteria is less concerned with the size of the article, but with how well an article defines, describes, and explains its subject. You may want to further divide the History section into subsections. This article would be scooped up in no time for GA review and would make for an excellent DYK hook! -- Caponer (talk) 13:59, 18 March 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks for the encouragement. Maybe I'll try it; but then I'll definitely need to do more reviews. I'm trying to do at least one review for every GA nomination I've made, and I'm falling behind... Ammodramus (talk) 21:02, 18 March 2014 (UTC)

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Old Pine Church, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Church (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). I'll spend a little time looking at Old Pine Church; since I'm not doing a GA review, I'll feel somewhat freer to edit it. By all means, revert if it looks like I'm getting too WP:BOLD.
One thing you might want to standardize: article or not? "Old Pine Church" or "the Old Pine Church"? I see both usages in the article. I'd weakly lean toward the no-article version, since OPC seems to be a proper noun—I'm thinking about how I'd write "The Presbyterian church was built in 1914" vs. "First United Presbyterian Church was built in 1914." Up to you, though.
Think there's an error in the references section: for Scaffidi (2012), you've got the title as "NRHP Reg'n Form: OPC", whereas it actually appears to be about Capon Chapel (related to your username, I assume). Did you paste in the wrong URL?
I'll probably add more to this as I continue reading; however, will save this now lest I find myself in an edit conflict... Ammodramus (talk) 19:54, 24 March 2014 (UTC)
- Ammodramus, no need to link to WP:BOLD--you should know by now that I seek your guidance especially because you are WP:BOLD! I'll go through and make the corrections, as it should be "Old Pine Church" throughout the prose. As you can see, I'm also working to expand Capon Chapel, and I somehow pasted its SHPO link into the reference for OPC. I've double checked the rest of the source links to ensure that I didn't do that with the other references. I promise that you're the only one that I've asked to review this article! -- Caponer (talk) 23:45, 24 March 2014 (UTC)
- Still working with this article. I'm beginning to think that Scaffidi could have been improved by going through somethhing like GA review: I'm finding some annoying ambiguities. In particular, the paragraph that spans pp. 7-8 is problematic: I'm not sure where she's referring to the current church, and where to one that apparently existed earlier on the site. In even more particular, was Leatherman ministering before 1838, possibly even as early as his move in 1821? Does Bittinger shed any light on this? Ammodramus (talk) 15:05, 25 March 2014 (UTC)
- Ammodramus, I literally just laughed out loud for a few minutes upon reading the first sentence of your above message! Yes--most of the NRHP registration forms I've come across could use a GA review. I believe most of the problematic paragraph refers to the current church building, but Scaffidi does refer briefly to the earlier structure that stood on the same site. She refers to the earlier structure as a church in one instance, and as a meeting house in another. If there are burial sites in the cemetery dating to as early as 1759, one would think the earlier structure was a church. Perhaps the following is true: there was a need for a permanent church in the community and one was built at that site "as early as around 1814, and possibly as early as 1792." (and really, possibly as early as 1759, but we won't go there). Then a new church is built on that site in 1838 (why the previous church is replaced after only 24 years of service, we don't know) after the land was deeded to the group of trustees by the Pomkrotzes. It was this current 1838 church that was meant to serve as a "union church." Leatherman was the earliest resident minister of the 1838 church. Unfortunately, Bittinger does not shed additional light on these subjects. I may have to do some digging to fill in these holes during my next research adventure in Hampshire County! As this has been a very long and arduous day, I apologize for my unintelligible response! -- Caponer (talk) 00:12, 27 March 2014 (UTC)
- Of course, whenever I'm complaining about somebody else's poor spelling or grammar, I'll wind up with an egregious typo of my own—in this case, "somethhing". Ammodramus (talk) 21:11, 27 March 2014 (UTC)
- Ammodramus, thank you so much for reviewing this article! For the resources at my current disposal, Scaffidi's limited account of some details will have to suffice! Let me know if you have any final comments regarding this article, and I'll address them and put her up for GAR. I hope to do some digging in the Hampshire County courthouse and library when I head back to WV next month to fill in some blanks! -- Caponer (talk) 00:49, 28 March 2014 (UTC)
- FYI, List of plantations in West Virginia is nominated for FL at Wikipedia:Featured list candidates/List of plantations in West Virginia/archive2. Let me know if you have any suggestions on how to improve the list to make it FL worthy! -- Caponer (talk) 00:50, 28 March 2014 (UTC)

- Do we know about when white settlement began in Mill Creek Valley? You've cited Munskie & Kearns for "one of the oldest settlement areas of Hampshire County", but a year, or at least a decade, would be very useful. Ammodramus (talk) 15:12, 25 March 2014 (UTC)
- There is no solid date or decade, but we know that it was in the middle of the 18th century. I'll see if I can find additional sources to back this up. Upon rereading this article, there are indeed many opportunities for providing greater clarity and detail! -- Caponer (talk) 00:15, 27 March 2014 (UTC)
- Sorry that I'm getting so little work done on the article. My keyboard time has been much taken up with other things, like work. If it's any consolation to you, I'm getting even less done with my own nascent article. If only I could get a grant from the Wikimedia Foundation to pay my rent...
- Trying to check sources for a little more history of Purgittsville, and discovered Scaffidi's foonote 3. Sarcasm seems to be indicated... Ammodramus (talk) 12:20, 28 March 2014 (UTC)
- Ammodramus, no apologies necessary! I definitely understand, and I appreciate any amount of time you're about to review the article. Work has been a little hectic and time consuming more than usual for me, and I've resorted to editing Wikipedia on my iPhone when I'm out and about (which is very tedious by the way)! I just saw Scaffidi's footnote 3 and chuckled a bit... I guess she meant to cite Brannon there? Something tells me that you and I should go into business as architectural history consultants--we'd be able to corner the market in no time! -- Caponer (talk) 11:51, 31 March 2014 (UTC)

An exciting month of wiki events!
Hello there,
I am pleased to say that April will be a very exciting month for Wikipedia in Washington, DC. We have a lot of different events coming up, so you will have a lot to choose from.
First, a reminder that our second annual Women in the Arts Edit-a-Thon will take place on Sunday, March 30 at the National Museum of Women in the Arts.
Coming up in April, we have our first-ever Open Government WikiHack with the Sunlight Foundation on April 5–6! We are working together to use open government data to improve the Wikimedia projects, and we would love your help. All are welcome, regardless of coding or editing experience. We will also be having a happy hour the day before, with refreshments courtesy of the Sunlight Foundation.
On Friday, April 11 we are having our first edit-a-thon ever with the Library of Congress. The Africa Collection Edit-a-Thon will focus on the Library's African and Middle East Reading Room. It'll be early in the morning, but it's especially worth it if you're interested in improving Wikipedia's coverage of African topics.
The following day, we are having our second annual Wiki Loves Capitol Hill training. We will discuss policy issues relevant to Wikimedia and plan for our day of outreach to Congressional staffers that will take place during the following week.
There are other meetups in the works, so be sure to check our meetup page with the latest. I hope to see you at some of these events!
All the best,
James Hare

DYK for Saint Leonard Catholic Church (Madison, Nebraska)
On 27 March 2014, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Saint Leonard Catholic Church (Madison, Nebraska), which you recently nominated. The fact was ... that the Jacob M. Nachtigall-designed St. Leonard Catholic Church (pictured) in Madison, Nebraska, contains a bone relic of its namesake? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Saint Leonard Catholic Church (Madison, Nebraska). You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, live views, daily totals), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page. |
FLC bot
The bot has been notoriously unreliable of late, to the point that many FLCs have had to be manually closed by the directors. It usually likes to run over the weekends, so the FLC might be closed in the next few days. If not, I'll see if I can force the issue. Thanks for updating the talk page. WikiCup 2014 March newsletter
A quick update as we are half way through round two of this year's competition. WikiCup newcomer Godot13 (submissions) (Pool E) leads, having produced a massive set of featured pictures for Silver certificate (United States), an article also brought to featured list status. Former finalist Adam Cuerden (submissions) (Pool G) is in second, which he owes mostly to his work with historical images, including a number of images from Urania's Mirror, an article also brought to good status. 2010 champion (Pool C) is third overall, thanks to contributions relating to naval history, including the newly featured Japanese battleship Nagato. Cliftonian (submissions), who currently leads Pool A and is sixth overall, takes the title for the highest scoring individual article of the competition so far, with the top importance featured article Ian Smith.
With 26 people having already scored over 100 points, it is likely that well over 100 points will be needed to secure a place in round 3. Recent years have required 123 (2013), 65 (2012), 41 (2011) and 100 (2010). Remember that only 64 will progress to round 3 at the end of April. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page; if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points equally.
