South Walls
[edit]Please provide appropriate references for your amendments. WP:V provides plenty of guidance. Cheers. Ben MacDui 20:54, 8 December 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks for your note. First of all, yes the OS have committed many sins - although I understand that sometimes revisions will incorporate more accurate local information. It may well be worth while writing to them about "Cantic". Secondly, whilst I am not in a position to dispute the nature of local usage for the name of the island, both Haswell-Smith and Donald Omand refer to "South Walls". If you can find a suitable reference for the use of "Walls" or "Wa'as", this could certainly be included. Apologies if I was a little terse above - I'm afraid we get our share of disruptive edits on Scottish island articles, but we could certainly use more editors with local knowledge. Thanks for the list. However, in addition to Haswell Smith and Omand above, the following all refer to South Walls.
- Ordnance Survey
- Gazetteer for Scotland: [1]
- Royal Commission on Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland: [2]
- Orkney Communities site: [3]
- Orkneyjar: [4]
- the local newspaper: [5]
- and indeed Orkney Islands Council: [6]
I have not yet seen a specific reference to the island alone as “Walls”, although as you say there are various references to “Walls" as part of a multiple name such as “Graemsey, Hoy and Walls” or “Walls and Flotta”.
However these latter may be references to the 19th century Parish of Walls or (Walls and Flotta), which on this evidence would appear to be much larger than South Walls itself. [7].
There would be no reason not to have an article about the parish, (see Category:Parishes of Orkney) although I understand the current name is “Flotta linked with Hoy and Walls”. Ben MacDui 18:09, 15 December 2008 (UTC)
