Regarding Encyclopedia of Arkansas
[edit]Hello! I notice from your edit history that you've been almost exclusively adding external links to the Encyclopedia of Arkansas History & Culture (EOA), and as a result others have interpreted this as spamming (e.g WP:LINKSPAM). At the very least, your actions suggest a single-purpose account. While adding external links may in some cases provide useful information, please see the guidelines on External links, especially WP:LINKSTOAVOID, the first type of which is: Any site that does not provide a unique resource beyond what the article would contain if it became a featured article. For many topics there are a multitude of encyclopedias and other resources in existence, but we needn't append all or any of them to the end of an article. Assuming EOA is a relevant and reliable source, it could instead be used as a reference within an article, especially those relating to Arkansas subjects. However, general articles like Millipede or Cestoda probably wouldn't benefit from a state-specific source as a reference. And since encyclopedias are tertiary sources, please review the policy on primary, secondary, and tertiary sources.
I also note that your username includes "eoa". If you are affiliated with Encyclopedia of Arkansas History & Culture (EOA), whether in a paid or unpaid capacity, please see our guidelines on Conflict of interest, and in the event you are paid for your contributions, please see the policy on Paid-contribution disclosure. See also External link guidelines for advertising and conflict of interest. All the best, --Animalparty! (talk) 19:33, 13 October 2015 (UTC)

[edit]HI Cals
I see you have run into some issues with the linking of Encyclopedia of Arkansas in a spam like manner. There are more productive ways to encourage the use of eoa as a source, Wikimedians have designed many activities that could generate a more effective collaborative approach. Despite the fact that I'm in Australia I'm happy to guide you through some of those activities along with ways to find local support and training on how the Wikipedia community works and how to interact with us more effectively. Please feel free to contact me more directly via gnangarra at wikimedia dot org dot au Gnangarra 05:19, 14 October 2015 (UTC)
Hi, I don't know what all the rules are and I'm sorry for coming across as a spammer. I just thought wiki readers interested in Arkansas-related topics would be interested in a state-specific online encyclopedia as well. I don't know how to do internal references or anything like that, that's why I added external links. I'd made it my goal to link all the new 2015 topics and was almost finished when I started getting a lot of messages like the above basically telling me to stop. I wasn't trying to do any harm. - The concept is to add and expand information rather than to just add external links. When adding content you cite the source from where your piece of information was obtained. For information on how to cite sources see Wikipedia:Citing sources, when editing a page there are also menu options to help you format and insert a citation it just of filling in the fields required, as quick guide.
- on visual editor you have a tool bar that looks like, click on cite in the middle of that bar then select the template according to the source type, ie newspaper, journal, web it'll give you a popup box just fill in the fields
- on source editor the tool bar looks like, click on cite on the righthand end then select the template according to the source type, ie newspaper, journal, web again it'll give you a popup box just fill in the fields you can
- hope this helps for how to improve content. The other issue is that your user name indicates a relationship or conflict of interest with the EOA, if you have such a connection then please put a notice on your user page explaining what that is. Such a conflict doesn't prevent you from contributing it means you have be careful on the way in which you contribute includes ensuring that any time you cite EOA it's a justifiable and non controversial reason. Thats the next question you need to clarify depending on what you provide I can guide you as to what to do next. Gnangarra 15:04, 14 October 2015 (UTC)
- There is also a guide for adding links as a cultural professional: Wikipedia:The Wikipedia Library/Cultural Professionals. Thinking strategically about how to help Wikipedia readers by adding more than just external links to articles, will help ensure that you don't get misunderstand as SPAM, Sadads (talk) 16:34, 14 October 2015 (UTC)
