Cav

[edit]

I appreciate your feelings on this, but please stop reverting the flag or you will fall foul of the WP:3RR rule and be blocked. We don't say Chris Froome is Kenyan, despite being born there, as he races for GBR. The same is true for Cav; born in IOM but races for GBR. Thanks! Ericoides (talk) 06:44, 14 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Mark Cavendish is Manx as he was born in the Isle of Man. The Isle of Man is not part of the United Kingdom, therefore, it isn't appropriate to have the United Kingdom in the 'Country' field. What you were insisting on was incorrect. It really is that simple. To achieve a healthy middle ground, I have changed the 'Country' field to 'Country Represented (Not necessarily country of birth or nationality)', which I think is a good compromise as nothing is being misrepresented now. Thanks for your understanding. You might find this interesting, particular the final reference to a quote Cav made in 2016: "on BBC television's Olympics coverage, Cavendish just said he is proud to be British and to race in a British jersey". Ericoides (talk) 12:13, 14 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
One final point. When you said, "What you were insisting on was incorrect. It really is that simple," you were wrong. The Wikipedia Manual of Style in its directives on flags in tables states: "Flags should never indicate the player's nationality in a non-sporting sense; flags should only indicate the sportsperson's national squad/team or representative nationality ... Flags should generally illustrate the highest level the sportsperson is associated with." See here. Ericoides (talk) 15:53, 14 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
