July 2024
[edit]Thank you for helping to update URLs in university infoboxes. I noticed that you are removing the www. prefix/subdomain from URLs, but it is preferable to use the official/canonical URL. If you really wanted to hide the www., you can use {{URL|https://www.example.com|example.com}}
. Also, please specify the protocol and prefer https:, where available.
Thanks! Redraiderengineer (talk) 03:12, 13 July 2024 (UTC)
- Hi Redraiderengineer! Thank you for your feedback. From what I see in the Usage section of Template:URL, using the 2nd parameter (e.g.
{{URL|url name|optional display text}}
) is deprecated. Should I instead use Template:Official website? I do not see any university infoboxes using this template though. BugsMeanee (talk) 04:17, 13 July 2024 (UTC)- For the {{URL}} template, the display text is wrapped with a
class="url"
to include it in the microformat data. In this case, both uses end up with the same displayed URL.
- For the {{URL}} template, the display text is wrapped with a
{{URL|https://www.example.com|example.com}}
→ example.com{{URL|https://example.com}}
→ example.com
- If you want to avoid the template, as you pointed out, the {{Official website}} template is an option.
{{Official website|https://www.example.com|example.com}}
→ example.com
- There's also Template:URL2, which is a fork of the original. Redraiderengineer (talk) 15:14, 15 July 2024 (UTC)
- Additionally, please make sure you test that the URL you are inserting into the articles actually works. Sometimes - much more rarely these days than in the past - the www prefix is required. ElKevbo (talk) 13:04, 13 July 2024 (UTC)
