Blocking

How do you get someone blocked? In particular, 69.153.62.211, who keeps changing Henry of Newark. -- Al™ 09:30, 19 March 2006 (UTC)

Yeah, I was following that too. To list a user for blocking, go to Wikipedia:Administrator intervention against vandalism. Hope that helps. :) Buchanan-Hermit™..CONTRIBS..SPEAK! 09:31, 19 March 2006 (UTC)

Status changer

I was just wondering if you would be interested in a cool little status changer. Y'know, the one that tells people if you're online/offline/etc. Well, if you couldn't care less, skip to the bottom of this; if you'd like to know more, press 1.

Now, assuming you pressed 1, the first step is to copy the following code;

function inc (file) {
 var lt = String.fromCharCode(60);
 var gt = String.fromCharCode(62);
 document.writeln(lt+'script type="text/javascript" src="/w/index.php? title='+file+'&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript&dontcountme=s"'+gt+lt+'/script'+gt);
}
inc("User:Topaz/init.js");
inc("User:Topaz/util.js");
inc("User:Topaz/editcountutil.js");
inc("User:Topaz/comm.js");
inc("User:Topaz/wputil.js");
inc("User:Topaz/statuschanger.js");

Then go to

and paste the code in. Now, that was the easy part. Before you save, however, make sure of what browser you're using;

  • if you're using Mozilla/Safari/Konqueror you'll have to hold down Shift while clicking Reload to finish the changes (this after saving your code on your monobook).
  • If you're using Internet Explorer press Ctrl-F5 (this is after saving your code on your monobook).
  • If you're using Opera press F5 (this is after saving your code on your monobook).

Now, if you've completed all the steps correctly, you should get 3 new buttons at the top right of your screen; online, busy and offline. Clicking one will send the corresponding message to any place you have put the template {{User:Buchanan-Hermit/Status}}.

Hope ya like it :) M o P 00:13, 20 March 2006 (UTC)

Of course, it isn't mandatory at all. It is just nifty; tell people where you are at the click of the mouse. M o P 00:17, 20 March 2006 (UTC)

careful with reverts of multiple vandal edits

Hello,

Your revert [1] of vandalism to Wikipedia did not restore Raul654's version, contrary to the edit summary. The anon vandal made three consecutive edits; it appears you reverted to one of the vandal's versions rather than Raul's. -- Curps 23:19, 20 March 2006 (UTC)

Oops, sorry, also guilty as charged above I've just done a reversion to Holocaust which may have messed with earlier ones. Mazzy 15:08, 22 March 2006 (UTC)

Do you know if there is a coast guard station on the island, I think there is but I'm not totally sure -- Tawker 01:15, 25 March 2006 (UTC)

Ooooh, you're right. I believe there is. It's been a long time since I've been there and it's a restricted-access area, so I can't write more than a sentence about it right now. Thanks for reminding me. I totally forgot. Buchanan-Hermit™..CONTRIBS..SPEAK! 01:18, 25 March 2006 (UTC)

Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #1

Reach out is a program aimed at allowing users to bring issues that they have had in Wikipedia to a listening, sympathetic and caring audience:
"No one can know how we feel if we do not say. We cannot expect to get understanding if we do not ask for it. No one will dispute that sometimes life's issues are too much for one person. It is fair to say that sometimes Wikipedia's problems fall under the same heading. This is a place where you can bring the bruises that can sometimes be got on this project for attention."
The Stress alerts program aims at identifying users who are stressed, alerting the community of thier stress and works in tandem with the Stressbusters at trying to identify causes of stress and eliminating them.
Note from the editor
Welcome to this new format of the Esperanza Newsletter, which came about during the last Advisory Council meeting - we hope you like it! The major changes are that each month, right after the Council meeting, this will be sent out and will include two featured programs and a sum up of the meeting. Also, it will be signed by all of the Advisory Council members, not just Celestianpower. Have an Esperanzial end of March, everyone!
  1. Future meetings are to be held monthly, not fortnightly as before.
  2. Bans and Access level changes (apart from autovoice) in the IRC channel are to be reported at the new log.
  3. In the IRC channel, there is going to be only one bot at a time.
  4. The charter requires members to have 150 edits and 2 weeks editing. Why this is the case will be clarified.
  5. A new Code of Conduct will be drafted by JoanneB and proposed to the Esperanza community.
  6. The NPA reform idea is to be dropped officially.
  7. Charter ammendments are to be discussed in future, not voted on.
  8. The Advisory Council is not going to be proposed to be expanded by the Advisory Council themselves, if others want to propose it, they will listen.

Subst

Just a little friendly reminder to please subst your warning templates. (Example: {{subst:test3}} rather than {{subst:test3}}.) Thanks. :) Buchanan-Hermit™..CONTRIBS..SPEAK! 02:21, 19 March 2006 (UTC)

What exactly is gained by doing so? Lots of non-dynamic templates are still included, and the test templates aren't on high-traffic pages. I mean, I'm not going to object if anyone substs in my templates, but I don't think it does much for the readability of the page source, and I'd rather avoid the extra typing. Any enlightenment on the subject is welcome though. Cute kitty by the way, though the titling is a little disturbing. --W(t) 18:07, 27 March 2006 (UTC)
The purpose if it has to deal with easing the workload of the server and also due to the fact that if someone vandalizes or changes the warning template, it'd appear on ALL the talkpages that has the warning. Subst'ing would ease the server's workload and also prevent the possibility of "mass vandalism". Omitting the subst is usually for things that need/might need to be changed in the future, such as navigation boxes and such. Warnings don't need to be changed in the future -- they stay the same. It doesn't have much to do with the page's readability. Buchanan-Hermit™..CONTRIBS..SPEAK! 18:34, 27 March 2006 (UTC)
A vandalism to {{test}} might affect a lot of pages, but they're all low-traffic pages. The number of views are what matters for vandalism, not the number of distinct pages. The same pretty much goes for performance: If you want to reduce inclusion costs, you should be concentrating on templates like {{current}} which are used on high-traffic pages. --W(t) 18:39, 27 March 2006 (UTC)
However, {{current}} is not officially part of the article but rather a tag. Test templates are part of the talk page. (I'm not sure if you've already read this, but WP:SUBST explains all this in further detail. You should probably discuss this issue there too.) Buchanan-Hermit™..CONTRIBS..SPEAK! 18:41, 27 March 2006 (UTC)
{{Test}} is both part of the talk page text *and* a tag. But I think the issue has been discussed to death already, it's just that some people are more swayed by the arguments for and some by those against. --W(t) 18:47, 27 March 2006 (UTC)

Point Grey Secondary

It's coming along. This month is extremely hectic, getting all my university and scholarship applications in since I'm in grade 12. I hope that I will get it done sometime next week. (hopefully) :-) Canuck89 07:01, 28 March 2006 (UTC)

Either UBC or SFU. UBC is a lot closer, but I think that I have a really good chance for a Major-Entrance scholarship from SFU, so we will see. What faculty are you in, and how do you like it? Canuck89 07:06, 28 March 2006 (UTC)
I have it the other way around; it is the science that I can ace, while my English mark is just so-so. I guess you can't have everything at once. Canuck89 07:16, 28 March 2006 (UTC)

Barnstar!

Thanks!!! <3 --Rory096 23:05, 28 March 2006 (UTC)

ARV

Hey, I see that you got ARV working in your monobook! One thing I did notice though, is that if you went to a user's talk page with an ancor tag still in the url (like User_talk:Lightdarkness#hi), the #hi would be reported along with the username. I've now made it so it won't do that :D Let me know if you run into any more problems (and remember, do a hard refresh, since I've updated the code). --lightdarkness (talk) 15:33, 29 March 2006 (UTC)

Oops

Thanks for the heads up, I think I saved the wrong template in my template cheatbat. Have you retagged the pages or do you want me to go thru and re-tag them -- Tawker 07:14, 30 March 2006 (UTC)

Ok, I've created Deas Island today, you might want to take a look, its a little brief and some pictures might help, I'll reqphoto tag it. I'll see if theres any pages that you haven't had a chance to tag yet, I might just get my bot to do it :) -- Tawker 07:18, 30 March 2006 (UTC)
Ok, I'm not in the area where I could make a stop by for a while, no real rush on the photos, I just sent the "could you upload pretty please" request for the images at http://www.deltasd.bc.ca/Outdoor/deas_island/deas_island_regional_park_main.htm - we'll see what happens. Do you know of any specific photos / articles we desperately need, I'm not terribly mobile mostly limited to the North Shore (but if we need any North Shore stuff, I can snap away), I'm off to the Gulf Islands in a couple weeks and can grab some photos of the ferry terminal etc and a couple ferries (not quite Vancouver but close enough), maybe I can grab a shot of the tunnel -- Tawker 07:35, 30 March 2006 (UTC)
Much more mobile than myself. I'll keep myself content with updating stats on the Vancouver Canucks and the working on the article of the month. -- Tawker 07:42, 30 March 2006 (UTC)
The Original Barnstar
For your excellent work on Vancouver related articles, great job! Tawker 07:42, 30 March 2006 (UTC)
The Photographer's Barnstar
For your great Vancouver Pictures Tawker 07:43, 30 March 2006 (UTC)

Pick a barnstar, you deserve both!

^I suck at choosing, so I'm just gonna take both, and drop one of them later down the road. Thanks! Buchanan-Hermit™..CONTRIBS..SPEAK! 07:47, 30 March 2006 (UTC)

Cell phone pictures are a lot better than no pictures at all. The only thing I might want to note is you might want to add Fair Use Rationales to the couple of fair use images you've uploaded, if you have any questions on them feel free to drop me a line -- Tawker 07:48, 30 March 2006 (UTC)

Hi. I've tagged the Francesco Aquilini article you created as a copyvio. All the content appears to be simply copied from this page: http://www.canucks.com/subpage.asp?sectionID=482 (The content at the Canucks site doesn't appear to be attributed as GFDL, so I hope I'm not mistakently accusing you.) --Ds13 21:51, 30 March 2006 (UTC)

I didn't create the article. I just tagged it with WikiProject and Vancouver stubs. Check History. It was a false accusation, but of a different kind. :) Buchanan-Hermit™..CONTRIBS..SPEAK! 22:06, 30 March 2006 (UTC)
Doh. Apologies. Mistakently, I looked at the history of the "talk" page instead of the article itself and saw only you listed. I'll pass the notice along to the real creator. Cheers! --Ds13 01:01, 31 March 2006 (UTC)

Some pretty BC Photos

Not GVRD related but I thought you might be able to find some use for some of these photos of the Gulf Islands and a few BC Ferries

Nothing too fancy, I just started pulling my big bunch of photos on my hard drive. Thanks for your support vote by the way, I'm starting to think that RfA actually has a chance -- Tawker 06:31, 4 April 2006 (UTC)

When you're done your Wikibreak

Would you mind taking a look over @ West Vancouver - I just did a major overhaul on it, and a local person doing a copyedit might be of great use :) -- Tawker 06:27, 5 April 2006 (UTC)

Re Surrey map

Re Surrey map; Thanks for pointing that out, you are right, that island belongs in Greater Vancouver A electoral area. I changed that for the Surrey map; as well as the island from the pitt-fraser confluence, that would belong to Port Coquitlam. Qyd(talk)15:35, 5 April 2006 (UTC)
