New Years Message for WikiProject United States

With the first of what I hope will be monthly newsletters I again want to welcome you to the project and hope that as we all work together through the year we can expand the project, create missing articles and generally improve the pedia thought mutual cooperation and support. Now that we have a project and a solid pool of willing members I wanted to strike while the iron is hot and solicite help in doing a few things that I believe is a good next step in solidifiing the project. I have outlined a few suggestions where you can help with on the projects talk page. This includes but is not limited too updating Portal:United States, assessing the remaining US related articles that haven't been assessed, eliminating the Unrefernced BLP's and others. If you have other suggestions or are interested in doing other things feel free. I just wanted to offer a few suggestions were additional help is needed. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions, comments or suggestions or you can always post something on the projects talk page. Administrator?

Hi - Poking through your talk page archives it appears no one has ever asked you if you have any interest in being an administrator. Poking more, I see you were blocked once for disruptive editing. Do you have any interest in being an admin? I haven't perused your contribs, but one would think 80,000 over 4 years should be enough to establish that you're not a vandal (!). If you're interested, I'd be happy to nominate you (although I might want to look at what happened with the block in some detail first). Totally up to you. WikiProject Colorado

Was a pleasure to meet you today! I was taking a look through some of the Colorado articles, and looking at a couple (Roxborough State Park and Golden Gate Canyon State Park), they could use a bit of expansion. I'm sure I can find plenty of photos of at least both of these to place on Commons, as well. Something you might be interested in helping point out a few sources for? TenWiki redux

The Tenwiki thing in Boulder library was interesting, though I had to leave early. Thanks for working with Neal to set this up (I'm guessing you two worked together). Made a few of the articles you linked to on my talk page. None is War and Peace, but starts. Oh well. My initial article on houseplant I commented on is infinitesimal, but over the years grew into a monster.

WP Colo rejuvenated

I will be happy to get back into the Project, as I was active in 07 and 08, cleaning up WP Colo and its related Proj articles. I'll review the To-Do List in more detail and take on some. Thanks for checking up on this. I had been worried WP Colo was fading a bit. I would be interested in starting and expanding Rail transport in Colorado and I'll set to it later today if I can. Turquoise Lake

Hi Buaidh, I've been to Turquoise Lake in Leadville many times. I'm sure there are a zillion Turquoise Lakes in the world, but the redirect was created solely for the Leadville one simply because, up until now, there had been no redirect. I see you're a registered PE, so I'm sure you have a good reason for removing my redirect? I know that you mean well, but just because I don't work on the articles you believe I should be working on does not mean that I am inactive. Template:Mycats doesn't seem to have had a lot of uptake. What did you have in mind for it? Normally, userboxes will insert categories by <includeonly> tags, and on user pages it's simple enough just to write the category invocation. — This, that, and the other (talk) 06:23, 12 February 2011 (UTC)

Template:Mycats was designed to be a subroutine call from Template:Uir, but was replaced my an internal routine. I don't know if it will have any other use.  Buaidh  21:00, 12 February 2011 (UTC)

Granite article

Hi there, Would you please take a look at the Granite article? I wrote it, but with very little information available and the fact that it has been almost a ghost town for a long time, it is mostly about the history of the town and gold mining in Colorado. I worked on it so hard and feel so very passionate about this area that I am unable to read the article with a critical eye. All things considered, I don't feel that it needs to be too dry, but on the other hand I don't want it to sound like a travel brochure. Perhaps it could be argued that the information is too broad (Royal Gorge for instance), though I'd like to keep it. But at this point I am just too close to it and am unable to judge my own creation. Also, although I feel that I did a fairly good job with the writing, it is not a natural talent for me and perhaps could use some tweaks. If you don't have time, perhaps you know someone that would be interested in helping me. I also have some photos that I'd like included, but I have not been able to figure out how to do it. Thanks. Mountain peaks of Colorado

The article Mountain peaks of Colorado may have run into a Wikimedia software bug due to it's complexity. Templates near the end of the article, such as the reference list are not being processed. Do you have any ideas on how we can work around this problem or how to get it fixed? --Footwarrior (talk) 16:01, 21 February 2011 (UTC)

The problem involves the processing time required to complete all the templates and varies with the time of use and the current number of users. Mountain peaks of Colorado currently works fine for me. If this problem recurs on a regular basis, we may need to either reduce the size of the tables or split the article into pieces.  Buaidh  02:49, 22 February 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for the reply. Is this timeout a problem when the article is viewed or when the article is saved? I just checked and the reference list didn't show up. We might have to break the article up or find another work around. --Footwarrior (talk) 15:15, 22 February 2011 (UTC)

Outline collaboration

Here's the latest addition to the religion section of Portal:Contents/Outlines. Wikipedia has rich coverage on this subject. Very interesting, especially from sociological and historical perspectives.

This is a call to all members of the Outline WikiProject and outline aficionados to help refine this outline. It needs annotations, missing topics added, and the entries in the general concepts section placed in more specific sections.

Userboxes

Hi, why are you changing people's userpages. I reverted this edit. That user is "interested in Canada" is not the same as the user "lives in Canada". Garion96 (talk) 18:49, 3 March 2011 (UTC)

We have transferred most of the functionality of Template:User interest Canada to Template:User in Canada. I am in the midst of fixing template invocations. Please see Template:User in Canada and Template:User in Puerto Rico for all the new options. Thanks,  Buaidh  18:54, 3 March 2011 (UTC)
That's all nice and well. But that still doesn't explain why you changed a userbox on another user's page from stating "This user is interested in Canada" to "This user is a resident native citizen of Canada" See this edit. {{User interest Canada|8}} read "This user is a native citizen of the Canada" until I changed it at 18:31 UTC today in a coordinated effort to simplify the maintenance of 1200 userbox templates. I changed the template invocation to {{User in Canada|13}} which reads "This user is a resident native citizen of Canada".  Buaidh  19:16, 3 March 2011 (UTC)

Or do you mean it said before you changed the userbox the same as it does now. If so than the meaning now is indeed still the same. It doesn't seem that much of an improvement though if even the old settings don't work anymore. Garion96 (talk) 19:26, 3 March 2011 (UTC)
Template:User interest Alberta is in the old format and Template:User in Alberta is in the new format. I was asked to change the format by a number of users. Among other things, the old format had 18 options and the new format has 53 options. There is a new option corresponding to each of the 18 old options.  Buaidh  19:37, 3 March 2011 (UTC)

(Non-administrator comment) I looked at both the old and new options for the template, and IMO some effort should have been made for back-compatibility, i.e. keep the same option numbers that were already there but then add the new ones, which would have left most people's User pages unchanged unless they wanted to go in and change the option. User categories

Your recent change to Template:User WP Mexico appear to have changed the category for participants in that project from Category:WikiProject Mexico participants to Category:WikiProject Mexico members. Assuming that this was intentional, you also need to fix the two category description pages. Also, many users in that project seem to be using Template:User WikiProject Mexico 2 on their userpages, and that one still assigns pages to the "member" category; unless you fix that template too, the membership of the project will be split between two categories. --R'n'B (call me Russ) 11:20, 4 March 2011 (UTC)

Template RCdoc

Hi Buaidh. The RCdoc template has the unfortunate property of directly placing every category of the form "Wikipedians by US state" and "Wikipedians by Canadian province" in Category:Wikipedians by location. These should only appear in the subcategories Category:Wikipedians in the United States and Category:Wikipedians in Canada respectively. It's also the case for states in Mexico. The current situation makes it much harder to find stuff in Category:Wikipedians by location. Cheers, Pichpich (talk) 15:05, 5 June 2011 (UTC)

I have fixed Template:RCdoc/r and Template:RCdoc/res. These affect:
  1. The six states and two territories of Australia
  2. The ten provinces and three territories of Canada
  3. The 28 states and seven union territories of India
  4. The 31 states and the Federal District of Mexico
  5. The seven emirates of the United Arab Emirates
  6. The four nations of the United Kingdom
  7. The 50 states and the District of Columbia of the United States

I just nominated this page for deletion. Unfortunately, the primary references I could find for this term were the wikipedia article and various wikipedia mirrors. Additionally, the references are of primary research material. In my view, the entire article is [WP:OR|original research]] as it defines what the term is and includes references to primary research material. Wikipedia should be summary of the notable and reliably sourced research done by others - not the creation of new works. Your user page

Hi. For a decidedly random reason, I happened to look at your User page today. It took a long time to load, presumably because the impressively large array of userboxes. Then I noticed that it is included in Category:Pages where template include size is exceeded. I don't know how serious an issue that is, but I suppose you might want to think about splitting some of the content off to subpages. Just a thought. --Orlady (talk) 23:17, 18 June 2011 (UTC)

US National Archives collaboration

Would you like to help improve Wikipedia's coverage of topics related to the National Archives and its incredible collection? This summer, the National Archives—which houses some of America's most important historical documents—is hosting me as its Wikipedian in Residence, and I have created WP:NARA to launch these efforts.

Undiscussed changes

Why have you changed this userbox without prior discussion? The new version substantially changes the appearance of the userbox. Two standard-sized images have been replaced for one non-standard-sized image.. -- Scjessey (talk) 20:46, 9 July 2011 (UTC)

The new Template:User from England is part of a new series of 2555 regional userbox templates. The new templates have a standard appearance and additional functionality. All flag images have a standard height of 45 pixels and a proportional width. I'll be happy to revert this template back to the previous template if a consensus so wishes. I'm all for standardising templates, but why use an non-standard image size? Take a look at the userboxes on my page and you'll see the new userbox sticks out like a sore thumb -- Scjessey (talk) 21:04, 9 July 2011 (UTC)

With the 2010 Census data becoming a focus for a lot of editing activity, I think we need a US-wide discussion of editing conventions. I've started this at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject United States, which I think is an appropriate venue for it. First topic there is Describing/naming census designated places. Knowing of your interest in US place articles, I think you might be interested in contributing. Template:User Australia

Hello there. Without any explanation, you recently changed the fundamental meaning of Template:User Australia by changing its text from "this user comes from Australia" to "this user lives in Australia". There are over 500 Australians linked to that userbox; many of us no longer live in Australia, so you rendered all our profiles inaccurate. Also, there was already a userbox carrying the text "this user lives in Australia" so it's completely unclear why you made the edit. I have reverted it. Please do not do anything like this again. Suggestion to pull WikiProject Wyoming under WikiProject United States

It was recently suggested that WikiProject Wyoming, to which you are a member, may be inactive or semi active and it might be beneficial to include it in the list of projects supported by WikiProject United States. After reviewing the project it appears that there have not been any active discussions on the talk page in some time and the only content updates appear to be simple maintenance so being supported by a larger project might be beneficial. After reviewing the project it appears that there haven't been much active discussion on the talk page in some time and the only content updates appear to be simple maintenance so being supported by a larger project might be beneficial. I have begun a discussion on the projects talk page to see how the members of the project feel about this suggestion. Additions to 'see also' section

You appear to be adding "see also" entries to a good number of state articles. In theory, I have no objection to adding relevant links; but the majority of the new links already exist in the body of the article - and as a general rule, I'm not a big fan of needless redundant clutter. So, I object to the mass additions of these links.

Is there an existing discussion that took place on these additions? They seem to be discouraged per WP:ALSO, "Links already integrated into the body of the text are generally not repeated in a 'See also' section, and navigation boxes at the bottom of articles may substitute for many links." --- Barek (talkcontribs) - 22:43, 11 August 2011 (UTC)

Also "main" template is for important articles summarized in the text. e.g. under "Alabama", if there were a History subsection, I might have a "main" template to "History of Alabama" with a summary in the Alabama article. When used in the ==See also== section of an article, Template:Main refers to articles that encompass the entire range of the subject article, i.e., an outline or index of the subject. This has been accepted practice for a number of years. I suppose we could create another template such as “General reference:”, but this would involve altering thousands articles. Addition of this sort of thing is not supported in WP:ALSO.
Template "main", signifies the location of the "main" article for that particular subsection. Under "See also", what would "main" indicate? "See also" is merely a catchall subsection for topics/links not performed above. There can be no main for that particular subsection, nor for any of the rest of the bottom subsections: "Reference", "External links," "Notes." None can have a "main" template. The other sections might have "main" articles linked elsewhere" History, Geography, Geology, Notables, etc. might have articles that are longer and merely summarized in the article. "Outlines" are merely aids to editors, usually written after the fact, one reason why we have such a sloppy or undefined link between the federal level of US government and local government (except the state article itself). The outline is nearly useless.
If they could be hidden from regular readers, maybe they could be made more useful to editors who might try to keep them up, but I doubt it.
Perhaps in an article or essay about outlines, one would have a summary and a "main" pointer to the actual outline? Student7 (talk) 21:15, 14 August 2011 (UTC)

In a discussion under manual of style (see Wikipedia_talk:Manual_of_Style_(layout)#Additions_to_See_also), editors appeared to agree with you that outlines were acceptable in the See Also subsection. North America

Hello. Previous discussions had been held and we reached a consensus at this page. I've reverted your hatnote for Mexico in the countries table because it is not necessary. It will only help to continue to spread a misconception that Mexico, in whole or in part, belongs to Central America which is false. Kinda the same that you asked about Turk and Caicos and Bahamas. Neither the Mexican government or the Central American countries consider Mexico part of that region. Most importantly, no reputable geographic source considers Mexico part of that region. It seems (accordingly to Encyclopaedia Britannica) that some physiographers describe physiographically (duh!) Central America as far as Mexico's Isthmus of Tehuantepec. But that's not a mainstream view. Also and most importantly this is already included in the article prose, in the appropiate sections. So, again a hatnote is not necessary in the countries table.

On the other hand a hatnote is very useful in the case of Bahamas and Turk and Caicos and I totally support it. But in the case of Mexico, it wasn't accurate and as I already said, it helped create a misconception about its geographic locale.

The UN geoscheme cannot be used as a geographic reference because, well it is not a geographic source but a statistical one, and because of the following:

According to the United Nations, the assignment of countries or areas to specific groupings is for statistical convenience and does not imply any assumption regarding political or other affiliation of countries or territories.[1]

So the categorization of particular countries in this geoscheme by the UN, was totally arbitrary and the UN aknowledges that. So it cannot be used as a geographical source. Hello again my new friend - great job with Template:Satop - just one thing though - could we get the parameter "nocomm=" to be the defaulted to off and/or removed. This is for 2 reasons - Firstly - Wikimedia Commons is an external link, not an internal link. The "See also" section should be reserved for internal navigation when ever possible - Secondly, but related to the first is that most main pages already have commons link in the External links section by way of the {{Sister project links}} template, thus we are duplicating a external link for no reason. Pls see United States as an example were Wikimedia Commons is there in the wrong place and there 2 times - I see this is happening in our FA and GA article that work hard on having things in the right place and not be duplicated as seen at Canada and Australia. I really like this template and dont want to see it removed because of this one small problem that the hardcore FA and GA people may not like.Moxy (talk) 05:55, 31 August 2011 (UTC)

To be honest with you I agree that it should be considered internal - However people have argued the fact that users have to login with a different account (if they dont have a universal account) shows its separation and it should not be treated any differently then all the other sister projects - and is why for GA and FA articles commons is preferred in the External links section with its sister links. Changes to display of footnotes in national articles

Hi Buaidh, I reverted one of these to Scotland and then noticed that it was a mass change by a regular user. Is there some discussion or guideline that I am unaware of that prompted this change?--SabreBD (talk) 15:23, 12 September 2011 (UTC)

The minimum column width functionality was added to Template:Reflist in April 2011. Eager editors have changed the References section of many articles from number of columns to minimum column width. The choice of which to use makes relatively little difference. I personally prefer to use {{reflist|2}} rather than {{reflist|colwidth=30em}} because the latter produces an unpredictable number of columns depending on the current browser setting. It seems a bold series of edits for a personal preference. I have a preference for {{reflist|colwidth=30em}} precisely because it adapts to the browser setting, which I thought was the point. But its a mild preference. A bigger problem is when reflists are set to 3 (or more) columns, which displays badly on some browsers. I had thought of the 30em as a solution to that problem. I have reverted a few of this additions then noticed there is many of them by you. You are aware that {{reflist|colwidth=30em}} lets screen size set the columns rather then forcing them set at 2 or 3 etc. If you are aware 30em - could you explain the rational behind forcing set columns on our readers? I personally don't have strong feelings on the issue of number of columns versus minimum column width. I think that minimum column width is a nice feature to have, but I think it should be used sparingly. I think {{reflist|2}} is generally preferable to {{reflist|colwidth=30em}} for references. A predictable number of columns is usually easier for a user to deal with than a range of column widths. This observation is based on my 41 years of software and user interface development. I made these changes merely as an aside to other article changes. I hope you're not reverting other changes.  Buaidh  13:18, 13 September 2011 (UTC)
You are aware that setting the columns will make and over page on many many screens sizes - meaning they have to side scroll because we are forcing the columns and there screen is not big enough. {{reflist|colwidth=30em}} will make it so that the columns will not cause over paging because if there is only room for one then one one will appear. And no just reverted this additions (I think 3 of them) - On a side note portals and see also section should be in Alphabetical order - we have many many pages were people are going back having to fix the see also section because its not in the proper order - (in some cases simply reverting your additions). ABC order in the see also section is generally a requirement for GA and FA articles. Why because all should be ABC order this way we are not showing any preferences for a certain link or portal.. 1. I'm quite aware of screen size issues, but I think consistency of layout is a greater issue for the majority of users. Minimum column width is a really cute feature, but it can add to user confusion.

2. Alphabetical order is required for the list of articles in the See also section, but it is not required for portal boxes. For regional articles, a regional hierarchy makes far greater sense. Yours aye,  Buaidh  15:21, 13 September 2011 (UTC)

I personally see this as non issue , but user accessibility is always preferred over personal style preferences. Concerns about {{Satop}}

Hi, I've just come across this template for the first time because Yorkshire is on my watchlist.

A couple of pointss;

  1. I don't think the addition of the headline "Additional, more specific, and related topics may be found at:" is either useful (a personal view) or (as far as I can see) allowed by WP:SEEALSO. Has it been discussed anywhere? (I also raised it at Wikipedia_talk:Manual_of_Style/Layout#.7B.7BSatop.7D.7D before I thought of coming here to your own talk page).
  2. What set of articles is the template intended to be used on? If less than 100% of articles with "See also" sections, then the reader will be left puzzled as to why some have the "headline" and others don't.
  3. I'm puzzled by the statement "The See also section of a Wikipedia article should normally terminate with either a
    template or a navagation bar template.
    ". As far as I know the SA section normally terminates with the start of the References section, and any navbox doesn't come until after External Links (WP:FOOTER lists the sections). Is that statement telling me to add {{clear}} at the end of every "See also" section?

You raise some excellent points about Template:Satop.
  1. There seems to be a great deal of confusion among editors as to what belongs in the See also section of an article. I added an optional headline to Template:Satop in an attempt to to add a human touch to a possibly incoherent collection of internal links. The default headline can either be changed to something more meaningful or changed to default to no headline.
  2. Template:Satop was designed to be used in articles referenced by WikiProject Outline of Knowledge, but I {hopefully} made it sufficiently general to be used in any article.
  3. I added the note about terminating the See also section because Template:Satop is dynamic and may change in appearance as additional portals are created. An invocation of Template:Clear at the end of the See also section keeps Template:Satop from running into the References section. I added the navbar reference because some editors add relevant navbars to the end of the See also section, but that reference is superfluous and I will remove it.

Template:Satop may be used to list geographic, political, historical, and other associations with an article. If and when a portal is created for that association, it is shown. Satop also creates a search reference for all its parameters. For example, a search engine can tell that Haiti is associated with CARICOM even if the Caribbean Community is not mentioned in the article.  Buaidh  19:10, 26 September 2011 (UTC)

Annotations needed

The annotating of the entries on Portal:Contents/Outlines is nearing completion.

Annotated entries look like this:

  • Basketball – team sport in which two teams of five players try to score points by throwing or "shooting" a ball through the top of a basketball hoop while following a set of rules.
  • Canoeing and kayaking – two closely related forms of watercraft paddling, involving manually propelling and navigating specialized boats called canoes and kayaks using a blade that is joined to a shaft, known as a paddle, in the water.
  • Cricket – bat-and-ball team sport, the most popular form played on an oval-shaped outdoor arena known as a cricket field at the centre of which is a rectangular 22-yard (20.12 m) long pitch that is the focus of the game.
  • Martial arts – extensive systems of codified practices and traditions of combat, practiced for a variety of reasons, including self-defense, competition, physical health and fitness, as well as mental and spiritual development.

Buaidh, concerning outlines and their leads

Buaidh,

As you may have noticed, the outline project is still hotly controversial, and while support is very strong, certain criticisms have been raised against outlines again and again.

One of the main criticisms is about content forking. Whether or not outlines violate CFORK is debatable, but the outline feature that outline protesters keep pointing out is the lead sections - which are the same as in articles. The inclusion of a copy of the subject's main article in outline leads has brought a lot of heat to the outlines. Upon first glance, the lead makes outlines look like duplicates of articles, and this can be very disconcerting to some editors. I believe it is the element that triggers most of the deletion debates.

The problem must be solved soon, as recurring criticisms spark new anti-outline debates from time to time, which endanger the existence of outlines, and eat up an inordinate amount of editors' (and especially my) time.

So, I've started working on a solution...

I've trimmed and reformatted the leads of all the outlines in the Culture and the arts section and have moved the introductory sentence to the top, and now they look like this (without the lines):


The following outline is provided as an overview of and topical guide to theatre:

Theatre (also theater) – branch of the performing arts concerned with acting out stories in front of an audience using combinations of speech, gesture, mime, puppets, music, dance, sound and spectacle — indeed any one or more elements of the other performing arts. Bernard Beckerman defines theatre as what "occurs when one or more human beings, isolated in time and/or space, present themselves to another or others."


That makes the lead section the location for the primary list entry. This matches the annotation format of the design the outlines are evolving into: fully annotated structured topics lists. For examples of outlines for which their list entries have been annotated or are in the process of being annotated, see:

  1. Outline of forestry
  2. Outline of cell biology
  3. Outline of chess
  4. Outline of basketball
  5. Outline of cricket
  6. Outline of culture
  7. Outline of food preparation
  8. Outline of geography
  9. Outline of tennis

I've reformatted the leads of those outlines too. The list entry in the lead blends the lead into the rest of the outline better. It matches the annotations in the body of the outlines.

But there are 534 outlines, and that's more than I can handle right now. At the rate I'm going, it will take me weeks to get all of the lead sections cleaned up.

I need the help of a prolific editor who is familiar with outlines who pumps out 1000s of edits as if he were a gatling gun.

The items in the template are not of any of the types that WP:ITALIC lists as proper uses of italics. Article titles as links aren't italicized unless WP:ITALICTITLE applies, which a blanket by-default italicization obviously does not account for. --Cybercobra (talk) 10:28, 20 October 2011 (UTC)

WikiProject style guides don't override Wikipedia-wide rules, especially when the templates in question merely link to outlines/indices as opposed to being used in outline/index articles. I see nothing in WP:ITALIC or WP:ITALICTITLE which would suggest the italicization of titles of outline/index articles. Denver Mountain Parks

Hi Buaidh-- any interest in this topic? MattWright was helping me early on, but he doesn't seem to be active lately. I've been attempting to do some cleanup on pages (e.g., Dedisse Park and Bergen Park) and discovered Denver was credited with Elk Meadow Park, so fixed that. That latter page needs work! (They all do.)

Protected Areas

Another question, if you don't mind... In the page [Historic Landmarks in Colorado] why don't we have a category for National Natural Landmarks in the table at the end? All the other "Protected areas" seem to be listed. I searched in Protected Areas for a while before I found the page [of Protected Areas US] which does list them, but it seemed a little cryptic. An x-ref on the NHL page (as both are admin. by NPS) would seem reasonable.

Arunachal Pradesh user templates

Hi, I see about 5 templates, with some inter-related transclusions, which no one is using other than yourself, in some sub-pages.

  • Template:User citizen Arunachal Pradesh
  • Template:User interest Arunachal Pradesh
  • Template:User WP Arunachal Pradesh
  • Template:User from Arunachal Pradesh
  • Template:User in Arunachal Pradesh

Can this be consolidated and/or removed? If not, then some further information about these would be useful for me to learn more about these templates.

Categorization of these templates are at two different levels, namely, Category:Arunachal Pradesh templates & Category:Arunachal Pradesh user templates‎ (two separate groups above). I wonder why.

I've moved these five templates to Category:Arunachal Pradesh user templates, which is a subcategory of Category:Arunachal Pradesh templates. We are in the process of moving all these regional user templates to the user templates categories, but there are over 2000 of them, so many still need to be moved.
Four of these templates invoke Template:User in Arunachal Pradesh. These four templates were added to make it easier for new users to identify themselves, but the four are not themselves essential. Hi Buaidh, I recently finished work on my first outline Outline of domestic violence and I'm thinking about doing outlines for:

I thought I'd do some outreach because I have additional articles to write for this topic, but would like to focus my energy on the items that would be most useful and notable for Wikipedia generally and the outline. Template:Sar

I was updating the /doc pg for Template:Sar, and I noticed that there are only nine "r" links in that template. When I was checking Template:Satop, because it invokes 'sar', it uses ten links. I'm wondering if this will cause a problem in not displaying the tenth link. Appreciate your help! Thanks, --Funandtrvl (talk) 17:53, 16 December 2011 (UTC)

Minnesota (and other states)

First, please stop adding info to article WP:LEADs that belongs in the body of the article (and noticeably, you are only adding this info to the lead, which should be a summary of the article's text). This population detail is of a level inappropriate to the lead of a broad overview article, besides that it's already in the infobox, and is only an estimate. I did, and you re-added it. More importantly, you shouldn't be adding it to the lead of any article-- it belongs in demographics. Others shouldn't have to clean up after you-- it would be more helpful if you'd add it in the right place to begin with (Minnesota is now corrected). Do you read article history and diffs? You put it in the lead, I moved it to Demographics where it should be, then you re-added it to the lead. Someone might call that edit warring :) :) Anyway, seems resolved now, but please, if you're going to continue adding this estimate (which seems strange), please add it to the appropriate place in each article. This is an interesting question. Articles about incorporated places are primarily about the incorporated city or town, but may also include information about the surrounding area including the postal address. If you are discussing both the town and the surrounding area, just make that point clear. In the case of Morrison, the fact that the surrounding area is so much more populous than the town itself is an important point of the article. Yours aye,  Buaidh  18:20, 28 December 2011 (UTC)
