Bounty FAC

Now at FAC here. —  Cliftonian (talk)  01:53, 1 June 2015 (UTC)

Bishop of Meath and Kildare

Hi! Just to let you know I have reverted your edit to Pat Storey. For some reason, most likely historical, the Bishop of Meath and Kildare is styled the The Most Reverend. Even though that title is for archbishops, this is the one exception to that rule. Gaia Octavia Agrippa Talk 21:37, 2 June 2015 (UTC)

I did wonder whether that was the case. Then I saw this, from the Irish Times, which I assumed was correct. Might I suggest that, if there is an anomaly with this title, it is mentioned, with an apprpriate citation, in the article? Brianboulton (talk) 21:52, 2 June 2015 (UTC)
Presumably, the author of that article made the same assumption that you did; that as a bishop she is a Right Rev'd. I have added details about her title to the article, as you suggested. Hopefully this has made it clear. Gaia Octavia Agrippa Talk 15:32, 3 June 2015 (UTC)
The Bishop of Meath and Kildare
As you may or may not be aware
Is entitled to boast
She's not "Right" – she is "Most"
Which Most other Right Revs think unfair.

Have you heard the one about the Archdeacon of Oakham? Brianboulton (talk) 09:15, 6 June 2015 (UTC)
No, but there is a rather rude one about the Bishop of Monaghan I wouldn't dare to post! – SchroCat (talk) 09:46, 6 June 2015 (UTC)

This correspondence is now closed: Ed.

I see, with what enthusiasm you can imagine, there is a Monteverdi Festival in Venice coming on in November, and it includes what is billed as the world première of the reconstructed L'Arianna concocted by one Claudio Cavina. I don't know if this musicological grave-robbery is interesting enough to be mentioned in the article; I merely mention it, leave the matter in your hands, and beat a strategic retreat, whistling tunes from The GondoliersTim riley talk 14:42, 5 June 2015 (UTC)

Yes, and for a mere £2,950 you could be there! Cavina is quite well known in what might be termed Monteverdi circles – or what you might term the circles of hell - and has a reputation for putting some lead into old Claudio's pencil. He has contrived his Arianna with "a mixture of scholarly speculation and artistic insight", according to the blurb I've received. Of that there can be no possible doubt whatever. You're in for a treat tomorrow morning on the Third Programme: Seedy Review's Building a Library is on Il ritorno d'Ulisse in Patria. But we shall probably both be listening the following Saturday: it's Die Meistersinger. Sixtus Beckmesser talk 15:03, 12 June 2015 (UTC)

Tom Simpson

Hi Brian, it's been a year and a half since your peer review of Tom Simpson. I put it up for FAC a month ago, with only two support's. I'll be disappointed if it doesn't pass due to the lack of interest. Can you tell what it's chances are and if there's any thing else I can do? I'm a noob at this, so just need some advice please. I said I found the reduction of race detail hard, but have been trying my best. The small additions since the copy edit by WP:GOCE may need a check. BaldBoris 11:49, 7 June 2015 (UTC)

Hello Boris. I know the frustration of long waits at FAC when nothing seems to happen. I will look at the article tonight when I have a little time, and leave some comments on the FAC page. If nothing else, that will get the review going again. Brianboulton (talk) 13:06, 7 June 2015 (UTC)

Pluto

@Crisco 1492:@Dank: Can I have your views on the suggestion (see Wikipedia talk:Today's featured article/requests that we run Pluto as TFA for the second time, on 14 July next? It last ran on 7 October 2007. I'll ask you to comment here in the first instance, in the hope that we can present an agreed view. Brianboulton (talk) 23:47, 7 June 2015 (UTC)

Time for a PR?

Evening Brian, Tim riley and I have been working on P.G. Wodehouse and have now launched him on both the main page and now at PR. If you have time, or inclination, your thoughts would be much appreciated. Pip pip! – SchroCat (talk) 21:04, 8 June 2015 (UTC)

Most certainly – should be fun! (Don't understand what you mean by "launched him on the main page", though) Brianboulton (talk) 21:19, 8 June 2015 (UTC)

PR request

(moved to remind me)

Wikipedia:Peer review/Chetro Ketl/archive1: There still isn't a big hurry, but I plan to close the PR in about two weeks. So if you're still interested and willing to take a look I really hope you can do it this week. If you aren't interested or too busy I'll understand. Thanks. RO(talk) 00:11, 9 June 2015 (UTC)

I have started to look at this, but there have been many distractions – and I am about to start another month's stint as TFA coordinator. I'll try and give a bit more time to it, but the best I can do, probably, is to give you whatever I've got in 8 to 10 days' time. It won't be a full review, but it might still be useful. Brianboulton (talk) 08:52, 9 June 2015 (UTC)
I'd appreciate anything you are willing to offer. RO(talk) 16:56, 9 June 2015 (UTC)

Aug 31

Aug 31 2015 will be the 80th anniversary of Carrow Road. The Rambling Man and I are doing our best to get it ready to push it through FAC in time, but what are the chances of a main page slot if we're successful? --Dweller (talk) 16:00, 9 June 2015 (UTC)

Excellent I would have thought, unless something with a pretty good date-related claim turns up meantime. I would, though, mention this to User:Crisco 1492, who will be in charge of scheduling during August. Brianboulton (talk) 16:18, 9 June 2015 (UTC)
@Crisco 1492: What do you think? --Dweller (talk) 08:42, 10 June 2015 (UTC)
Superb. We'd better get our fingers out, then. Thanks. No idea how long FAC takes these days, but I don't think it's ever been swift. And we're not ready to submit it yet, either. --Dweller (talk) 09:14, 10 June 2015 (UTC)
When you've got a decent draft together, I'll peer-review it: that could shorten the FAC time. The coordinators are generally reasonable in pushing things along, if they know that a TFA date is targeted. Brianboulton (talk) 09:54, 10 June 2015 (UTC)
That is terrific. Both bits. --Dweller (talk) 10:55, 10 June 2015 (UTC)

Any chance you could take a look?

I've recently rewritten The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, and have started a peer review for it: Wikipedia:Peer review/The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes/archive1. I'm not particularly seeking a detailed prose review (though I appreciate that it will need one) but at this stage some advice on the shape the article should take. As something of a summary article for the collection, I had originally thought this would end up as a FL, but as I wrote it, it seems to have started to become more of an "article". However, I'm wary about going into too much detail on aspects that should be included in the article for the individual stories, so I was hoping that if you had a chance you could take a look and let me know your thoughts on the broad strokes of the article. Any advice you could give would be greatly appreciated, particularly as I would like to similarly improve the articles for the other short story collections. Harrias talk 17:06, 12 June 2015 (UTC)

Schooner

If they finished the schooner, why were they still there when Pandora arrived? Just curious. —  Cliftonian (talk)  06:01, 13 June 2015 (UTC)

Not clear from the sources, but I presume they were putting the finishing touches to it when Pandora arrived. (As an extra bit of cheek they called the schooner Resolution, after Cook's ship!) Brianboulton (talk) 08:54, 13 June 2015 (UTC)
Indeed, one wonders what Edwards must have thought of that. Or, indeed, any Tahitians who remembered Cook. —  Cliftonian (talk)  09:55, 13 June 2015 (UTC)

Baton pass

  • Thanks for a great month, Chris. Brian, if it's no more work for you, I'd prefer you copy the whole lead into the TFA rather than half of it. Crisco's style of copying the whole lead hasn't caused any problems, there's an inconsistency issue, and it's less work for me if I don't have to copy the lead in. (Btw guys, on another topic entirely, I'm going to keep an eye out for great writing over at GAN and invite guest co-writers maybe twice a month. I'll copyedit, of course. After we see how it goes, I'd love to to get your comments.) - Dank (push to talk) 11:52, 14 June 2015 (UTC)

Wodehouse, again

Thank you so much for your comments at the recent PR for P.G. Wodehouse. The article is now at FAC should you wish to comment further. Many thanks once again. – SchroCat (talk) 01:06, 16 June 2015 (UTC)

As promised

It is quite long, I fear but there are good reasons for that. I've placed Warren G. Harding at peer review.--Wehwalt (talk) 14:03, 16 June 2015 (UTC)

TFA 2 July

@Nick-D: (also @Dank:): Thanks, Nick, for scheduling Air raids on Japan. I have altered all the supporting pages to give effect to this change. The one thing I can't do, though, is remove the protection from Almirante Latorre-class battleship, as this requires admin action. Maybe you can oblige (I am putting this message on my talk so that I don't lose sight of it). Brianboulton (talk) 15:44, 16 June 2015 (UTC)

It doesn't appear to be protected. - Dank (push to talk) 16:07, 16 June 2015 (UTC)
Oh, well, maybe the protection hadn't clocked in before I removed the main page message. Hopefully all will be well. Brianboulton (talk) 16:20, 16 June 2015 (UTC)
I also can't see any protection here (including for what would have been the lead image). Nick-D (talk) 09:43, 17 June 2015 (UTC)

A barnstar for you!

The Teamwork Barnstar
Many congratulations on the promotion of Mutiny on the Bounty, easily one of the best articles I have read in a very long time. The article is a prime example of what can happen when two great contributors get together with a load of books. CassiantoTalk 15:18, 21 June 2015 (UTC)
  • Thank you for those very kind words. I genuinely enjoyed working on the Mutiny – a fascinating, many-sided story worth all the time spent on it. And I can't homestly say that about all the articles I've worked on. Brianboulton (talk) 15:33, 21 June 2015 (UTC)
Huzzah for Otaheite!

  • Thank you, Brian, for all the hard graft you put into the Bounty article and for the great experience of working together with you. I enjoyed it immensely and am really quite pleased with the outcome. Please let me know if you think of something else you would like to work together on. Cheers! and keep well. A wonderful experience all around, probably the best of my time on Wikipedia. Here's to more of the same in the future. —  Cliftonian (talk)  09:23, 22 June 2015 (UTC)

Beadle

(separated, lest I forget)

If any of you could find the time to have a look over Sir Hugh Beadle, a man (in?)famous for greatly upsetting Harold Wilson, there is a peer review open here. Any comments appreciated. Cheers, —  Cliftonian (talk)  08:30, 23 June 2015 (UTC)

I will be pleased to review any article about a man named Beadle, provided that his first name isn't Jeremy (for more than one reason). After today my online time will be very restricted until Saturday, so I may not be able to start before then. Brianboulton (talk) 16:18, 23 June 2015 (UTC)
Don't worry, no rush. I appreciate any time you can give. —  Cliftonian (talk)  16:19, 23 June 2015 (UTC)
Just a note to let you know as a participant in the peer review that Sir Hugh is now at FAC here. Thanks for all your help earlier and I hope you're well. Cheers, —  Cliftonian (talk)  06:25, 7 July 2015 (UTC)

Quick request

I can see you're currently scheduling July—could I politely ask you not to schedule a painting articles towards the end of the month if possible? Assuming Preparing for a Fancy Dress Ball passes FAC in time (it should–currently on 6 supports and no opposes, including supports from a number of big hitters, with over a month to go), I'd like it to run on 1 August to coincide with the reopening of the York Art Gallery where Fancy Dress Ball is currently housed, along with three of the other paintings illustrated in the article. Because of The Rules, I can't even add it to the pending list, let alone TFAR, unless/until it actually passes FAC. Many thanks! – iridescent 22:36, 24 June 2015 (UTC)

Quick question ... the column currently includes "in three- sets final", which isn't and wasn't in the article lead. In general, are you copying the leads directly into the TFA column? - Dank (push to talk) 13:29, 27 June 2015 (UTC)

This was a TFAR nomination. I copied the blurb from the TFAR page, as supplied by the nominator, so I guess the wording is his. Brianboulton (talk) 13:48, 27 June 2015 (UTC)
Sorry, I missed that it was TFAR. - Dank (push to talk) 13:51, 27 June 2015 (UTC)

Wikimedia blog post includes you

Hi Brian, a recent Wikimedia blog post included two of your articles. Can you check it out and give me feedback on the general concept? I think Wehwalt did a fine job. Ed Erhart (WMF) (talk) 10:10, 28 June 2015 (UTC)

It was very kind of Gary to include two of my recent efforts in the blog, and he summarised their content perfectly. The concept is excellent – people will get a pretty good idea of the range and variety of Wikipedia's articles, and I hope they will add their comments. We get too little feedback from those outside the wikipedia bubble. Brianboulton (talk) 11:42, 28 June 2015 (UTC)
Thanks, Brian. The post did very well on Facebook, but because it mentioned a trial by battle, most of the comments were sadly about Game of Thrones. :-) Ed Erhart (WMF) (talk) 04:10, 29 June 2015 (UTC)
