PR Tchaikovsky and the Five

Thanks very much for all the work you're putting into the PR for Tchaikovsky and the Five, and my apologies for making you work as hard as you are on it. I suspect this is far more work than you had intended, but it is appreciated. I am more than a little embarrassed that the article is apparently as much of mess as it is, but you're right, it is hard to throw away thoroughly researched material. As a result, I have had problems shaping the article as it should. Thanks again for your input—it is really a help. Jonyungk (talk) 12:25, 11 December 2009 (UTC)

You could always create "Tchaikovsky and the Belyalev circle" :) Brianboulton (talk) 12:28, 11 December 2009 (UTC)
Good point. :)
Seriously, though, one quick question regarding the Legacy section. How much of what was originally there for the Belyayev circle was on the mark per your suggestion? Anything that was cut? All of it? I'm thinking that perhaps I might have been hasty in cutting as I had but would like a second opinion. Thanks. Jonyungk (talk) 04:58, 13 December 2009 (UTC)
Thanks very much for the suggestion. Here's how I amended it:
The initial hostility of the Five against Tchaikovsky was mitigated by Tchaikovsky's improved relationships first with Balakirev and then with Rimsky-Korsakov, the latter of who substantially embraced the cosmopolitan conservatory-based approach, as distinct from pure Russian nationalism. The Five dispersed as a unit, but were replaced by the Belyalev circle of younger composers that grew around Rimsky-Korsakov. This group, while writing in a nationalistic style pioneered by Rimsky-Korsakov and Balakirev,[100] was much more accomodating of Western compositional practices as personified by the music of Tchaikovsky.[101] Rimsky-Korsakov wrote about this tendency:
At this time [approximately 1892] there had begun to be noticable a considerable cooling-off and even a somewhat inimical attitude toward the memory of the Five in the time of Balakirev. On the contrary, a worship of Tchaikovsky and a tendency toward eclecticism were growing stronger. Nor could one help noticing the predilection (which sprang up in our circle) for Italian and French music of the era of the wig and the farthingale [that is, the eighteenth century], music introduced by Tchaikovsky in his Queen of Spades and Iolanta.[102]
As a result of this influence plus their academic training from Rimsky-Korsakov, especially in the case of Glazunov, these composers combined the best compositional techniques of the Five and Tchaikovsky in their music.[103] The Belyalev circle continued to influence the development of Russian music until well into the 20th century.[104]
It seems like this should be enough to finish the article, but as usual I'm open to suggestions. Thanks again for all your help. Jonyungk (talk) 16:52, 14 December 2009 (UTC)

Thank you for another superb peer review. I'll incorporate almost all of your suggestions in the coming days. In the meantime, there are a couple of points on which I've requested further clarification; if you have a chance to respond at some point, I'd very much appreciate it. Peter Heywood map

The map is OK - agree that proving the background is PD may be a bit of a problem at FAC. The original version here has nicer arrows and labels. I think I could make something close to that if you want. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 00:46, 12 December 2009 (UTC)

I can make a base map and then see what you think before labeling it. Will take me a few days. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 03:59, 14 December 2009 (UTC)
Since you offered, could you take a look at Jay Pritzker Pavilion. It is TonyTheTiger's article, but I did a massive copyedit before FAC and have lost my critical distance. I think it might be a bit too detailed in places, but am not sure. If you could take a look and either make comments on the talk page or we can open a new PR, that would be very helpful. If not, no problem. Thanks, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 20:01, 14 December 2009 (UTC)
Will look in the next couple of days. Brianboulton (talk) 21:39, 14 December 2009 (UTC)

I'll try - God knows I owe you more than one - but no promises. It's exam time, and then I'm visiting family for Christmas. Not sure they'll be pleased if I spend the time holed up reviewing articles about mutineers. If comments would still be useful by mid-January, I can promise to provide them then, but I'll aim for sooner. Steve Smith (talk) 21:50, 13 December 2009 (UTC)

Don't consider it any obligation, I'd just be interested to hear what you have to say. Mid-Jan will be a bit late for peer review, I hope it might have hit FAC by then. You can always pick it up there, of course. Brianboulton (talk) 21:58, 13 December 2009 (UTC)

Request for copyedit help

User:Awadewit has suggested a short list of editors to help copyedit Seattle Sounders FC in preparation for an FA review (it has failed one already). You were among the editors she suggested. Please, if you have time available, would you mind contributing some of your copyedit skills to this article. Thank you! --SkotyWATalk|Contribs 17:14, 16 December 2009 (UTC)

As above: :I'll try to get to it, but time is limited (I'm away all over Christmas) and I have other commitments. I'll do my best. Brianboulton (talk) 21:15, 16 December 2009 (UTC)
No worries. Thank you anyway. --SkotyWATalk|Contribs 06:29, 17 December 2009 (UTC)
One of the four editors Awadewit suggested has responded so the immediate need has been meet. That said, your copyedit skills are still welcome if you feel so inclined. Thanks. --SkotyWATalk|Contribs 05:27, 18 December 2009 (UTC)
Well, in view of that – and that I shall be away after tomorrow – I'll opt out of this one. Good luck with it anyway. Brianboulton (talk) 11:13, 18 December 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for encouraging me to do this. I still have concerns about overdetailing in the Legacy sectrion of this article but made provision in the lead for two separate legacies this time. I'd appreciate any input but realize you may be busy with the holidays. Thanks. Jonyungk (talk) 23:49, 16 December 2009 (UTC)

Great idea. I won't be able to look at it properly until after the hols - I'm away from 20th to 27th - but I will give it time when I get back. Brianboulton (talk) 00:04, 17 December 2009 (UTC)

we have addressed all the concerns raised by you. Thanks for your help. --CarTick 17:39, 17 December 2009 (UTC)

I don't have time for a thorough read-through, but at a glance the article looks much better presented, and you appear to have responded well to my concerns, with appropriate advice. Brianboulton (talk) 11:45, 18 December 2009 (UTC)

Hi, I've addressed most of the comments you made. Would you mind having another quick look at the bit about fees, it's just that I can't think of a way to explain that it is not the player who receives transfer fees. Thanks a lot -- BigDom 11:08, 18 December 2009 (UTC)

I have pipe-linked "transfer fee" in the lead, and made one or two adjustments in the text so I think the position is clear now. Brianboulton (talk) 11:28, 18 December 2009 (UTC)

Peer Review of William and Mary alumni

Thanks for the insights! I've just now gotten time to get back to that list. I've fixed almost all of the disambig. problems. I'm going to try to work out the few broken links. I don't know why all the sports links for the football players appear broken when they work for me too.

As to the notability issue, I'm 100% with you! For national political leaders, I think the list is okay. But, further down on the chain of command, things get a bit hairy. Some of the authors, athletes, academics, and low-level political figures are really dubious. The fellow who started that list, however, has a temper tantrum if anything gets cut from the list. His position is that every person with a Wikipedia entry MUST be notable for purposes of the list.

Hello Brian Boulton

I have resolved most of the comments on the peer review. Sorry it took so long. Tsange talk 14:54, 19 December 2009 (UTC)

Heywood map and PR

I have made the base map - what do you think? WHat should be labeled? I was going to add the arrows in three different colors (Bounty before mutiny, Bounty after mutiny, and the longboat).

I will be glad to keep an eye on the PR backlog and wanted to also wish you a Happy Christmas (in America it always sounds a bit odd that in Merry Old England people say Happy Christmas). Ruhrfisch ><>°° 19:31, 19 December 2009 (UTC)

PS I will try to make some PR comments on Peter Heywood too. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 19:35, 19 December 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for the map. The most important labels will be:-
  • Australia, Tasmania, New Zealand and New Guinea landmasses
  • Tahiti at 149°27'W, 17°40'S
  • Tofua (near site of mutiny) 175°07'W, 19°75'S
  • Tubuai (abortive refuge for Christian's band) 150°00'W, 23°00'S
  • Pitcairn Island 130°06'W, 25°04'S
  • Endeavour Strait between Australia and New Guinea
  • Coupang on Timor at 123°35'W 10°11'S
If you can think of any other necessary labels, please add them. I believe the voyage line details can be taken from existing maps. We say "Merry Christmas" as well. Brianboulton (talk) 20:07, 19 December 2009 (UTC)
Map showing Bounty's movements in the Pacific Ocean, 1788–1790
Voyage of Bounty to Tahiti and to location of the mutiny, 28 April 1789
Movements of Bounty after the mutiny, under Christian's command
Line of Bligh's open-boat journey to Coupang
OK, I will read the article and see of there are any other labels that come to mind. I might also make a small (red?) circle around some of the islands as they are quite small otherwise. Would that be OK, or would the label along be enough? Congratualtions on the 12 FAs in a year - that is quite an accomplishment! Ruhrfisch ><>°° 20:24, 19 December 2009 (UTC)
An assisted accomplishment, indeed. Small dots rather than circles might identify the islands (Pitcairn an Tubuai are invisible on the map) but let's see how it looks. It occurs to me that we should also label the Pacific Ocean. Brianboulton (talk) 21:30, 19 December 2009 (UTC)
I will add dots for the missing islands - had not checked what was needed there yet - thanks. Thanks also for all of your help at peer review and to articles I have worked on this past year. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 23:19, 19 December 2009 (UTC)
Welcome back. Sorry, with the holidays I have not worked on the Heywood map, but will work on it tonight. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 23:32, 27 December 2009 (UTC)

OK, I added the routes and Palmerston Island and Tongatuba Island. How does this look (before adding labels)? Ruhrfisch ><>°° 05:03, 28 December 2009 (UTC)

Looks terrific, thanks! Brianboulton (talk) 09:48, 28 December 2009 (UTC)
I made the labeled version and cleaned up the unlabeled base map a bit. Please let me know of any tweaks or changes needed and sorry for the delay. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 04:13, 29 December 2009 (UTC)
Thanks - the Pacific Ocean is already labeled (right of New Zealand, inside the ref path) - should the label be moved elsewhere? Will work on the others next. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 12:45, 29 December 2009 (UTC)
OK, I made all the changes - changed the map size here so the revised version shows, may have to WP:BYC to see the changed version in the article. Is this ok? Ruhrfisch ><>°° 13:15, 29 December 2009 (UTC)
I resized the base map too. Will reread the article next and see if i have any more comments for the PR - it read very well last night, so I doubt I will have many comments. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 13:26, 29 December 2009 (UTC)

View wanted on going for FL

Hi Brian, I thought that Bayreuth canon may be a suitable candidate for WP:FL. Could you be kind enough to give your opinion as someone with lots of experience on featured content on whether the article is ready for the process? Thanks. --Peter cohen (talk) 10:58, 20 December 2009 (UTC)

After noticing you weren't around, I've gone to Peer review on this. I would still appreciate any thoughts either hear or through PR. Thanks.--Peter cohen (talk) 21:38, 27 December 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for you feedback. I've acted on nearly everything. However, I'm stuck on some of the Bayreuth premiere dates. I've searched the Times and NYT archives and asked at the Wagner Project talk page but I've not been able to unearth the dates for Mastersingers or Dutchman. For Tristan I have a likely date of 25 July (when Liszt attended just before his death) but haven't found a categorical statement. I'm reluctant to insert any exact dates for premieres until I can fill in all 20 slots for world and Bayreuth premieres. Have you got any other ideas for solving this or any comment on my changes? Thanks again. --Peter cohen (talk) 20:36, 30 December 2009 (UTC)

I did have Lohengrin and tannhauser already [1] and [2]. So Mastersingers is the one we're both missing. (Thansk for the other two dates.--Peter cohen (talk) 00:42, 31 December 2009 (UTC)

Why don't you contact one of the Wagner Societies? They may be able to give you the info and an appropriate cite to where they found it.--Wehwalt (talk) 01:05, 31 December 2009 (UTC)
This suggests 23 July 1888. I can't see an indication of the editor who compiled these letters. It looks like proper academic work but I doubt it will be accepted as a reliable source without a name. I'll see if I get anywhere searching on the date in full.--Peter cohen (talk) 21:06, 31 December 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for the further feedback. I'll reply on the PR page. Have a Happy and Wiki-Productive New Year.--Peter cohen (talk) 00:17, 1 January 2010 (UTC)

I have now processed your latest comments and made a couple of other changes, such as moving the picture of the Wagners up. Biggest problem I had meeting your requirements is that I don't personally have a single source that gives all the premieres. I have therefore used several.

I'm away next weekend. If you don't raise any more issues by the time I'm back I'll go for FAC. If you do having anything else to raise, then hopefully I'll have sorted it by the time I go away.--Peter cohen (talk) 21:55, 2 January 2010 (UTC)

I will try to cut down the article per your request it been shrinked. Can you help me point this out? Thanks. One request though; can you give this article your support once it is cut down? Teeninvestor (talk) 22:59, 20 December 2009 (UTC)

The article's size has been cut down 10-20% and the number of subsections have dropped massively; dramatically improving the readability of the article. Can you give me any more input? (or alternately, a support)Teeninvestor (talk) 23:11, 22 December 2009 (UTC)

Unreferenced BLPs

Hello Brianboulton! Thank you for your contributions. I am a bot alerting you that 1 of the articles that you created is an Unreferenced Biography of a Living Person. Please note that all biographies of living persons must be sourced. If you were to add reliable, secondary sources to this article, it would greatly help us with the current 43 article backlog. Once the article is adequately referenced, please remove the {{unreferencedBLP}} tag. Here is the list:

Small Request

Hey! Saw ur name on the peer review page for opera and was wondering if you would be willing to spare 10 minutes or so giving the article Legally Blonde (musical) a quick skim. I know it's not opera but nobody else on the list is anything to do with theatrical arts. Im basically looking for areas where I can expand the article further and which areas need the most improvement. Mark E (talk) 12:08, 27 December 2009 (UTC)

Thanks much appreciated :)Mark E (talk) 20:22, 27 December 2009 (UTC)

Just an FYI

I know you're probably pretty busy, Brian, but just in case you're interested, I've just listed Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov at peer review. It's a pretty straightforward article, so it should be a lot less work than Tchaikovsky and the Five was; my main concern is avoiding the Alma problem, as you'll see in the write-up on the PR page. Thanks. Jonyungk (talk) 22:25, 30 December 2009 (UTC)

PS: The only other article I am planning to do anything with in the near future is Tchaikovsky and the Belyayev circle, as it feels fairly complete as it stands now. However, I am waiting for more feedback and time to mull things over before I submit to PR or GAC. Since you asked some time back for an advanced warning on upcoming projects, just wanted to keep you posted. Jonyungk (talk) 22:29, 30 December 2009 (UTC)

Happy New Year!

A noiseless patient spider,
I mark'd where on a little promontory it stood isolated,
Mark'd how to explore the vacant vast surrounding,
It launch'd forth filament, filament, filament, out of itself,
Ever unreeling them, ever tirelessly speeding them.

And you O my soul where you stand,
Surrounded, detached, in measureless oceans of space,
Ceaselessly musing, venturing, throwing, seeking the spheres to connect them,
Till the bridge you will need be form'd, till the ductile anchor hold,
Till the gossamer thread you fling catch somewhere, O my soul."
