Haukur's RFA

[edit]

Thanks for your support and your succinct comment on my RFA :) - Haukur Þorgeirsson 14:55, 5 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

High schools

[edit]

Brian,

It looks like you're taking this high-school list thing a bit too personally. You've always seemed polite and level-headed in most cases, but you really seem unfriendly to those that disagree with you on this.

Many people (though a minority) think that high-schools, unless otherwise notable, don't belong on Wikipedia. I'm not one of them, but I still can see why postng a list of such "missing" articles may be a controversial action that some will, in good faith, disapprove of.

All the best, – Quadell (talk) (bounties) 21:30, 5 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks.

[edit]

Although I have to say, it's been a long time since an 18 year has taken quite so much interest in me.  ;-)

I need a favor

[edit]

OwenX blocked over 15 AOL Ip numbers for 48 hours. Sadly Im using 10 of them right now. I need all the 200s Ip numbers blocked quickly as I barely could edit and I need to add something important to my monobook.js . Thanks --JAranda | watz sup 04:17, 6 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Wright Brothers

[edit]

Dear Brian,

I have come across images of the Wright brothers that have been uploaded by you. Would you be able to tell me where I can get high resolution copies of those images and who holds the copyright? I need the images urgently for an educational non profit book. Thank you!

My RFA

[edit]

Thank you very much for supporting my rather contentious request for adminship, but now that I've been promoted, I'd like to do a little dance here *DANCES*. If you have any specific issues/problems with me, please feel free to state them on my talk page so that I can work to prevent them in the future, and thanks once again!  ALKIVAR 07:36, 8 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Arabic

[edit]

Hi Brian. My version is Moroccan Arabic. There's no much difference between the Eastern version (Damascus) and the Egyptian one. People using those versions understand eachother very easily. On the other hand, the Maghreb Arabic (which the Moroccan is part of) is difficult to understand by the rest of Arabs.

I don't know of any good Arabic program that can help you better but I suggest you contact Carmen and Garzo. --  Wiki me up™

Why the hell did you revert my edits?

[edit]

I added some stuff and restored some lines one the article Cuba, and yet you deleted them without reason and treated me like a vandal. What's going on?

Here's the links? [1][2]--211.30.215.116 03:10, 9 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Westminster Session

[edit]

Hello, I noticed you uploaded a picture of the Westminster Session. I was wondering if you had a larger file of this picture that I might be able to reproduce/print in a larger format?

Thank you for your help. Elena

Re: Find-A-Grave missing articles

[edit]

You are quick, sire. :)

Just to assure you, I have checked each and every one of the links I purged and did a double check such that the right link gets deleted.

I am presently using the pywikibot, I found it simple to set up and use, however I am used to this sort of thing. If you tell me what you wanted to do I would be happy to do it for you, or tell you whether it is possible to do with the pywikibot, and if you actually wanted to do it yourself I would be happy to help you along. thanks Martin 20:13, 10 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

For some reason I find this quite funny. Usually I wouldn't mention it but that IP also asked me on my talk page to unblock him; of course clarifying he wasn't block... yet. Just strange all around, and when I saw the double block, decided to let you in on it. - RoyBoy 800 01:26, 11 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

A better anti-vandalism tool

[edit]

I'd welcome your input... User:Lupin/recent2.js, installation pretty much as before (copy my monobook.js if in doubt). This one uses the rss feed, so it is much much more bandwidth efficient, and it keeps on going more or less on its own, tracking changes about a minute or two after they are made. Look for the "Filter changes live" link in the toolbox. Lupin|talk|popups 06:27, 11 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your support on my RfA. If my RfA passes I will use my new abilities with the common interest in mind. I have asked Essjay and Celestianpower to mentor me for a bit until I have some more experience with the important aspects of being an administrator. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me.

Date signature

[edit]

Can you tell me how the heck you sign your date in a YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM format? You're the only one that I can see who signs that format on FPC. --AllyUnion (talk) 10:52, 13 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Then, after saving the page, press CTRL and F5 at the same time to reload the file. Now whenever you sign something, click the signature button at the top of the edit box, and it will automatically be pasted into the edit box. — BRIAN0918 • 2005-11-13 14:01

Are you to tell me that I'm suppose to parse a date because you want to be special? Yeesh. Are you the only one? (I say this because I'm a lazy programmer, and rather take to the idea of leaving code alone when it properly works.) --AllyUnion (talk) 14:03, 13 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
No, the person I got it from got it from someone else. I know of at least 2 or 3 others that use this, probably more. — BRIAN0918 • 2005-11-13 14:04
Is that the only format I have to look for? Are there people signing a format other than your YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM format? I don't like to play guess the format... --AllyUnion (talk) 14:08, 13 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hotlist

[edit]

No I don't, I'm afraid. I think Reflex Reaction might, though.

By the way, I just got access to something called "Multipedia", (c)1995. It has a lot of specialized encyclopedias (e.g. the Hutchinson's Dictionary of Space, M-W Medical Desk Dictionary, etc.). Do you think it's worth including? – Quadell (talk) (bounties) 15:14, 13 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the invite, but I think I'd rather focus my energies in other areas. My reasoning is that the articles we would be creating would be articles on subjects that used to be considered noteworthy, but that no longer are. So I'll just work on the biographies list and the various hotlists. Thanks anyway. – Quadell (talk) (bounties) 16:59, 14 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

EB1911

[edit]

I have just had a look at Tom Starlings page. Its stunning. When do you think it will be fully operational? I want to write something about it on the Wikisource. We also need to sort out how to use it. It looks as though making a printout of the page, downloading one of the existing OCR'd texts and using the printed page to make corrections is the simplest so far This will leave the pages such as the contributors and index to be scanned anew by us, as I don't thnk they are included in the OCRd stuff. Kind regards Apwoolrich 16:02, 13 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Encarta, Britannica, Ideas for new lists

[edit]

Brian, unfortunately I was not around for the creation of the two list. Quadell would likely have a better idea. I see that you have already left him a message. As a side note, you may want to check my user page if you are looking for ideas for lists. Feel free to add anything you might be interested. I'm working mostly on media right now. Radio stations should be next. --Reflex Reaction (talk)• 00:07, 14 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

By the way, this suggests to me that User:Bogdangiusca made the 2004 EB list. – Quadell (talk) (bounties) 17:12, 14 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hotlist 2

[edit]

I am currently compiling another list which I think will just be called Hotlist 2, which will include the Oxford World Encyclopedia, the Encyclopedia Americana, and Yale's yet-to-be-released Milford Encyclopedia, and possibly some others. To make this list immediately useful, I would like it to be compared against the current hotlist to see which entries exist in both. Would you be able to do this? — BRIAN0918 • 2005-11-15 22:55

I would be able to do it though Quaddell is a much better choice. He is a programmer by trade, while I'm a computer person by hobby. He knows perl which the choice for text manipulation and comparison. Since this a lengthy but straightfoward set of comparisons (compare hotlist2 entry 1 against hotlist, repeat until end of hotlist2) I can do it, but it will not be nearly so elegant nor thorough. I would just need to get his final list that he used to create the Hotlist.
If you are still looking for other list, World Book is another good general encyclopedic choice. I just need to get myself to a library that has access to its Table of contents. If you are willing to wait till the weekend, I will take a good look around. --Reflex Reaction (talk)• 15:41, 16 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I wish! I'm afraid I'm not good enough at perl to do that - I only dabble. You might try any of the fine fellows at Category:User perl-4. If that turns up dry, I could ask around my non-Wikipedian Perlite friends. – Quadell (talk) (bounties) 17:26, 16 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Arrested Development for the frontpage

[edit]

Hello! I removed your request for the Arrested Development (TV Series) article to be featured on the frontpage because articles need to become featured prior to being requested. Right now, the article is under FAC and is still just undergoing the process of becoming featured, once the article has been promoted you are welcome to place up the request again. Thanks! -- PRueda29 Ptalk29 22:48, 20 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, Sorry if I sounded stuck up and such. I just thought it already had to be featured before it could go on the page. -- PRueda29 Ptalk29 23:46 20 November 2005 (UTC)

I understand that there are several spoilers in the article, however I would advise you to place it where the main theme of the programme is finished being addressed; since it is the basic unit of the article, it requires the tag more than any other section. Also, the other parts of the article don't contain as many spoilers or something to whine and complain about. Once the tag is added, I will switch my vote (unless I locate something else that I do not find appealing; let's not hope for that). --Hollow Wilerding 00:22, 21 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
One more issue: references. They have to be formatted properly, which yours are not. I've read through the entire article, finally, and as it appears, everything else seems to live up to what it is capable of. So format the references, and once you have successfully completed the task, I'd be more than gleeful to cross out my objection. --Hollow Wilerding 00:33, 21 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

v blocks

[edit]

I've noticed that you have been using "v" as a block summary when blocking anonymous vandals. This is shown to anyone trying to edit from these IP addresses as the reason they are blocked. Most people affected are not experienced Wikipedia users and do not understand that v means vandalism. Please type it out in the future to avoid confusion. It's only a few more letters. :) Thanks.
