Wallander

I am the guy who has been contributing to the Wallander page with info from Swedish media. Mostly from my other computer where I don't have my screen name saved (yep, I have forgot my password). I just NOW realised you have leaft me a message on the talk page in October about the name "Povel Wallander". Well the actor in question was assigned to play "Wallander's father" and his dads name is Povel in the books. By the way, I really, really appreciate all your contributions and input on the Wallander page. I live in the US so I won't get to see the series untill this spring. (Unless my brother gan give the the DVD's, he works for the company who co-produced the Swedish language films, two of whom will be shown on BBC 4, and will distribute the BBC series in Scandinavia)

Now I become uncertain. As I said it was over 10 years ago I read them. David Warner is listed as Povel Wallander on IMBD, but then maybe someone is basing this on MY Wiki entry here. I have to check with my father. If I somehow have “dreamed” up the name Povel, I apologize. I did not intend to cause any disinformation.

I really loved the Wallander books when I read them (even if I think Henning Mankell whole idea of “something is rotten in Sweden” is really exhadurated) and I am an enormous fan of British crime dramas, so I am really, really looking forward to the Wallander series. PBS broadcasts with very low image quality so a lot of the “marvels” of the Red One camera will most likely “fall flat” to American viewers. Due to this the UK or the Swedish DVD’s will be a must. On Amazon UK you can still find those books with "Branagh free" covers :-)

At the time the rights for an English language Wallander films were locked up someplace else. Later when the Wallander rights reverted back to Mankell, the Ed Whitmore project was scrapped and the Wallander series as we know it materialized. Interesting side note is that the main character of "The Return of the Dancing Master", Stefan Lindman later moves to Ystad and joins Wallander's team in "Before the Frost". This character becomes Wallander's main crime solving partner in the Swedish language films and even dated Linda Wallander for a while before he meets his end. I don't have the companion books, but I think there is enough info on the web to cover production (although I'm having trouble finding filming info, especially in regards to the apartments). Also, I am worried about what you noted. Even if I published my final copy, over time the article will probably be refilled with cruft. Sounds great, and thanks for the advice. I tweaked the writing section a bit, but you're right, it needs more work. I'm not really sure if we're allowed to cite YouTube (copyright issues), but if we know the original source of that clip, we can cite it to that. I think it's from the sixth season DVD, though I'm not sure. I moved some of the writing info to "Remove?", which I have no problem removing. The information I have about "Pat the Cop" is not in the pilot article. If you want, remove if form my sandbox and add it to the Pilot article. The rest of the writing info seems better now, but tell me if you think it still requires further clean-up. Remember, please, please, please feel free to help and edit as you please. Well, the good news is that I'm almost done. The only major thing left is sourcing the awards and ratings. The ratings are going to be hard to source properly, and the awards just as time-consuming. I'll rewrite the plot once I get back from my holiday (in around one week), and then I'll ask another editor to copyedit it again. I'm really impressed with what you've done with that article, and suggest that you take it to FAC soon. I think it's GA passable now, but before you take it to FAC, you should check out the Doctor Who production material available: Doctor Who Confidential at Christmas, The Next Doctor Podcast, and Doctor Who Magazine 403 (and most-likely, 404) will all have quite a bit of information about him. Wallander

Bradley, you've clearly done a lot of good work on this article, but I maintain that the title is very misleading. There are more than one "Wallander TV Series", and your title is therefore confusing. As to your injunction not to move an article without consensus -- I'm not sure where you get this from, but I was following the W. principle of being bold. And I can of course boldly move it back again, but perhaps if you understand my reasoning you'll make that choice yourself.

I appreciate your guidance on page stats, take your point about the English version of W, and agree that subsequent body text edits help the disambiguation. But I still think your distinction between "TV Series" and "Film Series" is moot. Both the UK and the Swedish Wallander series were clearly budgeted on the basis of both TV and DVD sales, and I think both could equally be called (and -- more importantly, would be expected by readers to be called -- "TV series").

Reverting my retitling from "UK TV Series" suggests to me that you think "TV Series" is more helpful or less inaccurate in some way. Your note on this reversion says you've done this in the interest of consistency. Can you explain this? I don't see the value of this over the necessity (in this case) for disambiguation.

Hi, I agree, the whole "won't they/will they" section can go. I think the choices of books to be adopted are purely made on the basis that tey can sgoot in Ystad. The Dogs of Riga is in my opinion one of the strongest books and slso THE book that made Mankell into the house hold name he is in Sweden. The Man Who Smiled will allow for alot of filming around Southern Swedish country estates, something Left Bank seems to enjoy. What do you think? I agree with you about Faceless Killers. They should have done that book in series one, maybe as a 2 parter. That book pretty much sets the tone for the whole series of books and his relationship with Rydberg. I also agree with you about Linda. She comes of so wrong and the relationship between father and daughter comes across not any were near as fractured as it should be. My guess is that maybe they did not want the tone to be too dark?? Wallander is quite dark for being co-produced by PBS/WGBS Boston. I cannot help but wonder if they had a say in this or some kind of influence?? Over all they are doing an OK job compressing the stories into a 120 min format. The Swedish films directly based on the books are over way over 2 hours. I REALLY wonder what they will do if they get around to do a series 3?? Before The Frost changes the setting with Linda as a police officer and Pyramid is all short stories, that I guess they could tweak. The new Wallander book reportedly closes the door to any further books according to an interview Mankell did over the phone with Swedish pubcaster Svt. Yellowbird owns the rights to 24 Kurt Wallander story concepts that Mankell has written for them (Some good, some not so good), could be an option. I also think that Mankell could be motivated to write brand new teleplays. He wrote two some kind of special anniversary episodes for German cop show “Heimat” and has created and written some miniseries for Swedish television in the 90’s. In the interviews Mankell has done with Swedish media about the BBC series he has been VERY enthusiastic, and this is a man who mostly speaks very slowly and looks concerned. Here is something I wanted to run by you before I do anything. Various Swedish media outlets has recently reported that due to the Wallander series, Ystad has recieved a HUGE increase in tourists form the UK. I am not 100% that it belongs in this entry, but it is a kind of interesting. (Nor it is surprising, when the Wallander books started selling in Germany and later followed by the Swedish language films, Ystad, not exactly a tourism hot spot was flooded by Germans and one of the reasons WHY this production was able to get many tax cuts was that the Ystad city council and the tourism board there was hoping to replicate this phenomenon) VsanoJ (talk) 18:05, 26 May 2009 (UTC)

I added a small section about the Wallander series inpact on Ystad and Skane tourism. I bet Wallander will take home the Emmy for best mini-series. I know I am partial since I really enjoyed this series, but since I am currently living in the US, I cannot imagine a mini-series that can compete. Mini-series seems to be a lost art in Hollywood. I am afraid I am not familiar with Aisling Walsh. I used to watch the Bill when it was on the air in Sweden in the 90’s and Trail & Tribulations sounds very familiar. I think they have been way a head on pre-production then they let anyone know. Splitting the series up sounds like a good idea. I agree that some US reviews should be included. It actually seems that Wallander got better reviews in the US then anywhere else. But then one needs to take into account that it was shown on PBS and not ABC or CBS.I hoping they might enlist a Scandinavian director. Jonas Gimas would be a good choice (he is based in London and has worked on the Swedish Wallander among other stuff) or Niels Arden Oplev who directed The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo movie and did some work on Danish cop show Unit One/ Rejseholdet, a show that has a similar visual style to BBC’s Wallander. But I know I am just being partial here.

What do you think about Yellowbird giving Stieg Larssons books a English language treatment? How are you enjoying The Pyramid? Have you read Mankell’s “Return of the Dance Master”? The book actually ties into the Wallander books. VsanoJ (talk) 19:28, 18 June 2009 (UTC))

The main character in The Return of the Dancing Master is Stefan Lindman, who is a supporting character in Before The Frost and becomes a main character in the first Yellowbord series of films. Stieg Larsson's books are very different from Mankell, though.

Its fustrating I know to get pulled up on images; I do music articles and we have the same problem with sound files, can only use a few. But the policy is as it is, and here we are. Sorry, I couldn't find anything other than the source articles. Usually I'm able to fluke it and find copied versions of the article on other sites, but I guess these ones have been well kept. I guess you can ask the wider community at the TV WikiProject, because I think several people will be able to help you. Speaking of Friends, I'll start formatting the ref while watching the tennis. Do you plan on continuing formatting the episodes like we have, or should be switch to what I used here (just check the episode refs}?
