Welcome

[edit]

Hello, Boydcoddingtonjr, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions.

I notice that one of the first articles you edited appears to be dealing with a topic with which you may have a conflict of interest. In other words, you may find it difficult to write about that topic in a neutral and objective way, because you are, work for, or represent, the subject of that article. Your recent contributions may have already been reverted for this very reason.

To reduce the chances of deletion, you might like to draft your article before submission, then ask me or any other editor to proofread it. To start creating a draft article, just click your user name at the top of the screen when you are logged in, and edit that page as you would any other. If the page you created has already been deleted from Wikipedia, but you want to save the content from it to use for that draft, don't hesitate to ask anyone from this list and they will copy it to your user page.

The one firm rule we do have in connection with conflicts of interest is that accounts used by more than one person will unfortunately be blocked from editing. It is also worth noting that Wikipedia generally does not allow editors to have usernames which specifically link them to one company or corporation. If your username does have such a name, it would be advisable for you to request a change of username.

If you are stuck, and looking for help, please come to the New contributors' help page, where experienced Wikipedians can answer any queries you have! You can also just type {{helpme}} on your user page, and someone will show up shortly to answer your questions. Here are a few other good links for newcomers:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your name and the date. If you have any questions, check out Wikipedia:Where to ask a question or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome! CutOffTies (talk) 13:23, 3 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome to Wikipedia. Everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia. However, the username you have chosen (Boydcoddingtonjr) seems to imply that you are editing on behalf of a group, company or website.

There are two issues with this:

  1. It is possible that you have a conflict of interest. In keeping with Wikipedia's neutral point of view policy, you must exercise great caution when editing on topics related to your organization.
  2. Your account cannot represent a group of people. You may wish to create a new account with a username that represents only you. Alternatively, you may consider changing your username to avoid giving the impression that your personal account is being used for promotional purposes.

Regardless of whether you change your name or create a new account, you are not exempted from the guidelines concerning editing where you have a conflict of interest. For information on how to contribute to Wikipedia when you have a conflict of interest, please see our frequently asked questions for organizations. The article in question is Boyd Coddington‎. Please do not add promotional material to Wikipedia. While objective prose about beliefs, products or services is acceptable, Wikipedia is not intended to be a vehicle for soapboxing, advertising or promotion. Thank you. Please do not add commentary or your own personal analysis to Wikipedia articles. Doing so violates Wikipedia's neutral point of view policy and breaches the formal tone expected in an encyclopedia. Thank you. Please do not add inappropriate external links to Wikipedia. Wikipedia is not a collection of links, nor should it be used for advertising or promotion. Inappropriate links include (but are not limited to) links to personal web sites, links to web sites with which you are affiliated, and links that attract visitors to a web site or promote a product. See the external links guideline and spam guideline for further explanations. Because Wikipedia uses the nofollow attribute value, its external links are disregarded by most search engines. If you feel the link should be added to the article, please discuss it on the article's talk page rather than re-adding it. Thank you.

You currently appear to be engaged in an edit war. Users are expected to collaborate with others, to avoid editing disruptively, and to try to reach a consensus rather than repeatedly undoing other users' edits once it is known that there is a disagreement.

In particular, Wikipedia's policy on edit warring states:

  1. Edit warring is disruptive regardless of how many reverts you have made; that is to say, editors are not automatically "entitled" to three reverts.
  2. Do not edit war even if you believe you are right.

If you find yourself in an editing dispute, use the article's talk page to discuss controversial changes; work towards a version that represents consensus among editors. You can post a request for help at an appropriate noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases it may be appropriate to request temporary page protection. If you continue edit warring, you may be blocked from editing. CutOffTies (talk) 02:54, 21 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Cease editing on Boyd Coddington with immediate effect

[edit]

Hello

[edit]

Hello, I was asked to look at your contributions to the article Boyd Coddington, and have some questions for you, and some information that you need to know.

First of all, as I can see here, you used to edit as Boydcoddingtonjr, which you say is your real name. I see that other people have edited the article with similar user names, such as:

And it looks like someone has edited the article again as Boydcoddingtonjr even after you changed your username. So my question to you is, have you edited as any of those people I mentioned above? Also, did you edit as Boydcoddingtonjr just a moment ago or is that a different person? Have you edited that article as any other accounts?

Using multiple accounts on Wikipedia is called "sockpuppetry", and is only allowed under limited circumstances. Editing the same article using multiple accounts is almost never allowed. At this point, I will not block you, because I don't see that you knew that this was a problem. But in the future, you should know that it isn't allowed, and can be blocked for it.

If those other people who edited the article using your name (including the person who made this edit) are not you, then I need to know that, because that means that they are impersonating you, and we can't allow that. One of the editors has already been blocked for impersonation, but I'm concerned that there is another person who is currently active that may be impersonating you, and for obvious reasons we can't have that.

Keep in mind, we have methods of finding out if a person has edited using multiple accounts, and I can open up an investigation if necessary, but I'd much prefer if you were just honest with me about this. Again, at this time I don't see any reason to take any action against you, but we have a bit of a mess and I'd like to straighten it out.

Another matter I wanted to discuss is the apparent conflict of interest. If you are Boyd's son, then you have a very close connection to the subject of the article, and we caution you to be careful in editing the article. Advice can be seen at this guide to help you avoid difficulty at the article. Despite some of the warnings given above, we don't disallow an editor with a COI from editing an article, but if other editors feel that your edits are a problem, it's possible that actions can be taken against you (such as being blocked or banned, either of which would prevent you from editing the article in the future). So just keep that in mind. The reason why we have concerns in cases like this, is because we expect people to be neutral when editing an article, and most people would have difficulty doing that when the article is about their own father (I sure would if it were me). In addition, your actions lately have been changing links in the article away from your father's web sites to your own, which can be seen as self-promotional and possibly an attempt to draw traffic and increase sales, which isn't allowed.

I'll be watching your talk page here for a short time, so feel free to reply below this message and I'll respond. If I don't hear anything from you, I might have to open an investigation, as I said before, so I hope to hear from you soon. -- Atama 19:25, 21 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Since I haven't seen a reply to my request, and more suspicious activity has continued at the article, I've been forced to open a sockpuppet investigation. You are welcome to comment at the investigation. -- Atama 17:17, 25 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
